Chapter 1
“Xingyan Gege~~~”
“Be good, just endure it.”
As Xu Niannian stepped into the door, she heard two familiar voices accompanied by indescribable sounds.
The sweet words meant only for couples at that moment felt like a sharp knife piercing her heart.
She looked at the clothes scattered on the floor, clearly indicating that they had been taken off while walking, hastily heading into the room to get busy.
Inside, the two people were her best friend and her boyfriend.
When had they gotten together?
She didn’t know.
In that instant, she looked at the rose in her hand, suddenly feeling a sense of irony.
She had come to surprise him, but instead, it had turned into a shock for her.
As she listened to the conversation inside:
“Am I better, or is Nian Nian Jie better?”
“How could she compare to you? You’re so cute, unlike her, who’s as stiff as if she crawled out of an ancient tomb.”
“Stop saying that, Nian Nian Jie will get angry.”
Xu Niannian’s face flushed red with anger as she listened outside.
She silently picked up a stick that was meant for decoration in the room and switched her phone to record mode.
With a loud “Bang,” she kicked the door open with her swift move.
The people on the bed were instantly startled, both looking at her.
Her boyfriend, He Xingyan, immediately shrank back, hurriedly grabbing a blanket to cover himself.
“Why are you back? Didn’t you say you’d be back tomorrow?”
Xu Niannian sneered.
“How else could I see this grand show? You’re really playing around, I said, what’s wrong with being with anyone, but why does it have to be with my friend?”
At that moment, Xu Lingdang, her best friend, also curled into He Xingyan’s arms and hid under the blanket.
He Xingyan, both ashamed and angry, said, “You leave first, let me get dressed and then I’ll talk to you.”
Xu Niannian raised her phone again and stepped forward.
“I have to record you, you scumbag.”
He Xingyan scolded her angrily.
“Look at you, do you look like a woman? We’ve been together for two years and you never let me touch you. You’ve wasted the best years of my life.”
Xu Niannian was speechless. She had known He Xingyan for eight years and been together for two. Back then, he had insisted on being with her, promising to give her happiness.
She looked down at her own body, slender legs, and a perfectly shaped chest.
How could he push her out of the female group just because he cheated?
She shook her head, trying to clear her mind of the chaotic thoughts.
But at this moment, her best friend, Xu Lingdang, seemed to have been triggered and said:
“Do you know? Xingyan Gege told me that being with me gave him a new life, the joy and excitement I bring to him is something you can’t fulfill.”
“Yeah.”
He Xingyan chimed in.
Xu Niannian felt her blood surge, anger rising to her head.
Without hesitation, she used the stick to flick the blanket aside and directly struck He Xingyan with it, the sound of the blow echoing against his body.
He Xingyan tried to avoid getting hit, letting out a scream each time, his arm also getting hit.
Just then, Xu Lingdang screamed, and the sound seemed to awaken He Xingyan’s protective instincts.
He reached out to block the wooden stick with one hand, raising his neck and saying to Xu Niannian:
“Consider this as my apology, but to be honest, I’ve really had enough of being with you. Let’s break up.”
Xu Niannian angrily retorted:
“Fine, break up, but today, I’m going to have my fill of hitting you!”
She placed her phone aside, as she had already recorded enough, and started hitting with both hands, enjoying the process.
As she hit, He Xingyan, without any shame, threw off the blanket.
“Ah!”
Xu Niannian instantly felt like her eyes were burning, quickly covering her eyes, relieved that she hadn’t seen anything.
She stepped back but accidentally stepped on something unknown, slipping, and hitting her head on something hard.
A sharp pain surged, and Xu Niannian lost consciousness.
When she woke up again, she instinctively touched her head and realized there was no blood.
No blood, yet it still hurt.
Before she could figure out what happened, she noticed her hands were rough, and her clothes were dark and shabby.
Even though she was just a poor office worker, she hadn’t seen anyone dressed like this in a long time.
Looking around the room, it resembled a home she had once seen during her teaching trip to the mountains.
A low bed, grey concrete floors, a simple wooden table, and a portrait of a great person hanging on the wall.
Before she could think much more, the door was suddenly opened.
A short and thin woman entered, placing a bowl she was holding down by the side. When she saw Xu Niannian’s eyes open, she looked a bit surprised.
“Ah, Nian Nian, you’re awake?”
Xu Niannian sat up on the bed, still unsure of what was going on. How did she know her name?
Could it be that the scumbag knocked her out and sold her to the deep mountains to be a wife?
The thought sent a chill down her spine.
The woman noticed Xu Niannian wasn’t responding, so she picked up a bowl of millet porridge from the table and said:
“Nian Nian, I made some millet porridge for you. Drink it quickly. It’s all that’s left in the house, and there’s even a layer of rice oil floating on top.”
She reached out toward her with the bowl.
Xu Niannian wasn’t sure what was going on but responded cautiously:
“Just put it aside for now.”
The woman paused for a moment after hearing this, then placed the bowl aside and reminded her:
“Remember to drink it later, don’t let it spoil.”
At the woman’s words, Xu Niannian felt a sudden intense, burning hunger in her stomach.
She was starving, but she was wary of drinking anything of unknown origin. What if they drugged it?
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her.
A flood of memories rushed into her mind.
She took a moment to organize her thoughts and realized she had somehow entered a novel called “Sweet as Honey in the Seventies, Rebirth to Stir Up the Storm.”
This novel had been recommended to her by Xu Lingdang, who mentioned it was about a “cannon fodder” character with the same name as hers.
Since the cannon fodder character shared her name, Xu Niannian stayed up late reading it. After finishing, she felt so horrified by the tragic fate of this character with the same name that she wrote a scathing review, almost a thousand words long, criticizing the morally questionable content.
She never expected that she would end up in the same situation, entering this very cannon fodder role.
Realizing this, she sighed with relief—at least she wasn’t sold into the mountains to be a wife.
She picked up the bowl of millet porridge that the original character’s stepmother had brought her and began drinking. She wasn’t sure how long it had been since she last ate, but the porridge only partially eased her hunger.
At least, it allowed her to think more clearly.
From the memories in her mind, she understood she had entered the body of the cannon fodder character, Xu Niannian.
The heroine of this novel was the original character’s so-called stepsister, Xu Ruhua, and the story was about how she reborn and turned her life around in a dramatic way.
