Chapter 43
Aunt Luo stuffed the eggs into Zhan Xinyue’s hands and whispered a thank you.
Zhan Xinyue was puzzled and declined, “Aunt Luo, I can’t accept these eggs.”
Eggs were a valuable commodity in the rural areas of the 1970s, they provided nutrition and could be exchanged for money.
“Oh, I see you’re tight-lipped, but I’ll tell you anyway.” Aunt Luo leaned closer to Zhan Xinyue and whispered, “My useless eldest daughter has her eyes on Li Jian.”
“Yesterday, I heard that Zhan Hongyan was arrested, and knowing that their marriage was off, she asked me to find someone to arrange a match for them.”
Li Jian was tall and strong, with handsome features, it’s normal for girls to have a crush on him. Although he was a bit poor, most unmarried girls in the countryside cared more about feelings than material conditions.
Aunt Luo’s eldest daughter was 21 years old, considered an older unmarried woman in the rural countryside of the 1970s. She was not bad-looking either, she just wanted to find someone whose appearance matched hers. After searching high and low, she liked Li Jian’s type.
“Thankfully, you exposed the fact that Liu Ruyuan is Li Jian’s wife today, otherwise my daughter would have married into that family and I don’t know what kind of hardship they would have put her through.”
Aunt Luo patted her chest, looking terrified, and started to scold Li Jian for being shameless, having one wife already and wanting to marry another.
“That Liu Ruyuan is also a shameless woman, she actually allowed her husband to take another wife. She’s clinging to the old ways, taking a concubine for her husband. Ugh! She really thinks she’s the mistress of the house?”
“So, you must take these eggs.” Aunt Luo stuffed the eggs back into Zhan Xinyue’s hands.
“Then I’ll accept them with gratitude.” Zhan Xinyue smiled and took the eggs.
Aunt Luo thanked her profusely and hurried home. After this experience, her daughter also learned that you can’t just look at a man’s appearance when choosing a husband, character is the most important thing.
She, as a mother, also needed to be more careful in her matchmaking.
Zhan Xinyue was happy in her heart, she bid farewell to Aunt Luo, carrying the eggs in her left hand and holding the lotus leaves in her right hand, she strolled leisurely towards home.
Grandma was sitting in the courtyard mending shoes. Hearing the sound of the door opening, she knew it was Zhan Xinyue who had returned. She quickly got up and ran into the room, hiding the shoe sole and needlework box. She took a palm leaf fan and yawned as she walked out.
“Xinyue, you’re back. I had breakfast and then took a nap, I just got up, I feel much better.” After speaking, the old lady stretched.
Grandma Sheng had a bump on her head, Zhan Xinyue had told her to rest for the next two days and not mend shoes. She could only work secretly behind her granddaughter’s back, afraid of being discovered.
Zhan Xinyue had already heard Grandma’s hurried footsteps, and she could guess that the old lady was secretly mending shoes.
Zhan Xinyue didn’t expose her, anyway, she had nothing to do for the next two days, she would stay at home and keep Grandma company. When the bump on Grandma’s head healed, she would go up the mountain to collect honey.
“Grandma, we’re having lotus leaf rice today.” Zhan Xinyue smiled and raised the lotus leaves and eggs in her hand, “These eggs are from Aunt Luo.”
The old lady took the eggs and tapped them together, two by two, surprised, “These are all good eggs, Sister Luo is always so stingy, why is she suddenly so generous?”
Zhan Xinyue briefly explained the reason, and after listening, Grandma Sheng started scolding Li Jian, “That man is no good, he’s not brave enough to admit his child bride’s identity openly, and he wants to marry another woman home.”
“Right.” Zhan Xinyue agreed.
In her previous life, Zhan Xinyue had been tricked. Although they hadn’t had any physical relationship because of her allergy to saliva, she had been deceived by them for a long time.
In her previous life, Zhan Xinyue had dragged them all down to hell. As the saying goes, “each life has its own affairs,” this life was a new beginning. Zhan Xinyue hadn’t been hurt by them yet, she had hoped to live in peace and have nothing to do with them.
Unexpectedly, Zhan Hongyan had just died, and this family had set their sights on her again. Then don’t blame her for being ruthless.
Now, Li Jian and Liu Ruyuan had been taken to the police station. Even if they couldn’t confirm their enemy agent status, their relationship had been exposed, and they would definitely not be able to stay in Changhong Brigade anymore.
“Liu Ruyuan is no good either.” Grandma Sheng helped put the eggs away and washed the lotus leaves with Zhan Xinyue. The old lady was busy with her hands, and her mouth didn’t stop.
“It’s been so many years since liberation, and she can still tolerate her husband marrying another wife. I think she’s up to no good.”
“I guess she’s just not feeling well and wants to find someone to do the work at home. Both of them are black-hearted!”
