At six o’clock, the sunset was pleasant, and the university campus was full of life and energy. The harsh sound of sneakers scraping against the basketball court floor echoed through the air.
The mathematics department office was almost empty, and Teacher Wang stretched his muscles. A glance around revealed one person still inside. He asked, “Professor Qin, do you have a class tonight?”
Qin Nanshan moved his gaze away from the dog sticker on his screen and replied softly, “No.”
“Then why aren’t you going home?” Teacher Wang took a daring joke, “You just got married, with a wife and kids waiting at home. Why stay at school after work?”
“My wife is working late.” The usually calm man showed a fleeting smile. Teacher Wang thought he had seen it wrong, but after a closer look, he saw that there was no smile.
Although there was no smile, Teacher Wang, who had worked with him for more than two years, could sense that Qin Nanshan was in a good mood. He cautiously asked, “Professor Qin, the list for this semester’s ‘Famous Teachers’ Lecture’ has come out. I’m scheduled for this Friday, but it happens to be my mother-in-law’s birthday. Would you be okay if we switched?”
“Sure.”
Qin Nanshan was indeed in a good mood. Normally, he would think for a few minutes when a similar request came up, but today he didn’t hesitate for even a second and agreed immediately!
Teacher Wang thanked him, then brought over a small box of cakes he had bought for his wife. “The female teachers say this cake is delicious. I bought extra, so here’s a box for you.”
Qin Nanshan politely declined, but Teacher Wang laughed easily. “Don’t be polite, I know you don’t eat them, but women love sweets. Take it back for your wife.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Qin Nanshan accepted. “Thank you.”
He got home at 9 p.m., and the house was dim. Wen Yi still hadn’t come back. He glanced at his phone but didn’t hurry her.
After feeding Summer and washing up, he sat in the guest room for a while, and finally, there was some noise at the door.
He went to check and saw Wen Yi holding onto the shoe cabinet, balancing on one foot while trying to slip on her slippers. She wobbled, and the shoes neatly arranged at the bottom of the cabinet were now scattered.
Qin Nanshan walked over and helped steady her. The strong smell of alcohol on her made him frown.
Wen Yi leaned on his hand to put on her slippers, speaking as she did. “Young people these days are scary. If I weren’t pregnant, I wouldn’t even know if I could get home tonight.”
Qin Nanshan asked, “Do administrators have to socialize too?”
“Not really, it’s just that without any leaders around, everyone’s happy.” Wen Yi put on her slippers, then set her bag down and walked inside.
Qin Nanshan straightened the shoes, hung her bag on the rack, and followed her inside.
Wen Yi was already looking for clothes to change and shower. He asked, “You can’t even stand properly. Are you sure you can shower?”
Wen Yi, who had poor balance since childhood, smiled at him. “Can’t stand? Are you going to help me wash?”
Qin Nanshan frowned and ignored her suggestion. “There’s a bar in the bathroom. Hold onto that.”
Wen Yi turned around, grabbed her underwear, and hummed softly, “What’s there to be shy about between husband and wife?” She still wanted to take another look at his attractive abs.
But when she turned back, he was already gone. Tch, he really ran fast.
After she finished her shower and came out, he was back on the bed, pointing to the bedside table. “Your package. Looks like clothes. I brought it in.”
Wen Yi had bought so many packages, especially after the New Year when the delivery business resumed. He hadn’t been working yet, so he had to walk the dog every evening and collect her packages. Sometimes just one or two, sometimes seven. Once, he even borrowed a little cart from the security guard to carry them all.
Most of the packages were for the baby—she had bought four different kinds of bottles. She said every stage of a baby needed a different bottle, and once a period was over, it had to be replaced.
All of this was from the experience she learned in various mommy groups and public accounts. Every night before bed, she loved reading these things, and when she got excited, she would pull him into discussions, asking which color or material was best. So, he’d put in half the effort for these packages.
Wen Yi didn’t even remember what she had ordered, but maybe it was baby clothes. She sat on the bed and started unboxing. After tearing it open, she held it up and turned with surprise. “Your pajamas arrived!”
“???”
Qin Nanshan looked at the brightly-colored clothes covered in strange animals and felt speechless.
“You like dogs, right? This is Snoopy, a dog. How cute is it?” She fished out a matching set for the baby, “I got one for the baby too! Father-daughter set!”
“…”
“Try it on.”
Qin Nanshan reluctantly rejected, “Wen Yi…”
“Oh, it’s just for me to see at home, I won’t wear it outside. What difference does it make? The fabric is really good. It was two hundred per set. Go try it on.”
Wen Yi was hard to argue with, so he reluctantly took the clothes to change. Wen Yi had a brilliant idea. “Just change here, the top is enough.”
Her flirtatious gaze was impossible to hide as she stared at him. Qin Nanshan sighed helplessly, stood at the head of the bed, and put on the childish pajamas.
Wen Yi had never opened her eyes so wide, but unfortunately, his actions were too fast, and the delicious sight only lasted two seconds before being covered by Snoopy.
She felt deeply regretful and thought, “Next time, I’ll buy him a transparent one so he can be the king for once.”
Wen Yi pitifully said, “Why did you change so fast…”
Qin Nanshan called her out. “What exactly do you want to see?”
Wen Yi grinned, “I want to see everything.”
But he, ever conservative, ignored her and went to change back into his original black pajamas. Wen Yi, frustrated, raised her fist at his retreating figure, thinking, “One day, I’ll have you all to myself!”
Then, as if recalling something important, she shouted, “Ah, Qin Nanshan! I still haven’t seen you in Snoopy! Come back!”
But he was already too far away.
Forget it, forget it, there will be more opportunities.
When Qin Nanshan came back in, he was holding a box and handed it to her. Wen Yi saw what it was, and her hormones flared up again, sweetly smiling. “Did you buy this for me?”
He replied, “No, a colleague gave it to me.”
“…”
Wen Yi’s smile froze for a moment, and her mind repeated: “The fact that this Qin Nanshan brought back a cake from a colleague already surpasses 99% of the past Qin Nanshans. That’s something to be thankful for.”
But she still had to teach him. “You can just say you bought it for me. I wouldn’t know any different. A little white lie can bring more happiness.”
“Are you happy?”
“Pretty happy,” she admitted. The cake did bring her a bit of joy.
He looked at her and slowly said, “Then next time, I’ll buy it for you.”
