Chapter 10 : Looking for a Wife
The car slowly drove into the alley and stopped in front of the house.
The courtyard lights were dim and peaceful. Fu Chengze draped his suit jacket over Jiang Yunshu’s shoulders, and the two walked side by side through the front yard into the main hall.
Grandma Fu was sitting on the sofa, watching a popular historical family drama. When she saw the couple return, they exchanged a few words, and then she urged them to go upstairs to rest.
In the bedroom on the second floor, Jiang Yunshu finished her shower and walked over, wrapped in a bathrobe, drying her damp hair. “I’m done, you can go.”
Fu Chengze turned back, his eyes dim, feeling a sudden dryness in his throat.
The woman standing in front of him had her cheeks flushed from the heat, her smooth skin glowing under the light, with droplets of water dripping from her hair onto her fair collarbones.
Entering the bathroom, the shower was full of steam, still carrying the faintest trace of her scent.
He took quite a bit of effort to suppress his desire. Then, thinking about Jiang Yunshu’s recent morning sickness, Fu Chengze furrowed his brows and shook his head at the mirror.
After Jiang Yunshu dried her hair and changed into her sleepwear, she received a call from Gu Jingyan.
“Hey, Yunshu, I’ve dropped Ran Yi off at home. I just left her place and got into the elevator. Guess who I ran into?”
“Ran Yi’s new target?” Jiang Yunshu guessed.
Gu Jingyan was surprised, “Are you clairvoyant? How did you guess right?”
Jiang Yunshu chuckled, “Hearing your gossip tone, I just took a wild guess.”
“I’m telling you, this person lives in the same neighborhood as Li Ran Yi, and even across from her. He was staring at me as I dropped Ran Yi off. He’s probably interested in her.”
Jiang Yunshu asked, “Did you explain anything to him?”
“Explain what? I threw Ran Yi on the couch and left. They have surveillance outside their door. If he cares that much, he’ll know when I left. That’s called playing it cool, you know?”
Jiang Yunshu laughed, “I don’t understand.”
“Alright, next time we meet, I’ll give you a book on love skills so you can learn how to play it cool.”
After hanging up, Jiang Yunshu went downstairs to get some water.
As she passed through the living room, she noticed Grandma Fu was still sitting there watching TV.
She walked over, sat next to Grandma Fu, and said, “Grandma, I’ll keep you company for a bit.”
“No need to stay with me, go rest if you’re tired.”
“I’m not tired, it’s still early, and I can’t sleep yet.” Jiang Yunshu placed her cup down. “I see you’ve been watching this historical drama for the past few days. Can you tell me what it’s about?”
Once the topic came up, Grandma Fu became lively, enthusiastically discussing the plot.
Upstairs, Fu Chengze finished his shower and noticed Jiang Yunshu wasn’t in the bedroom.
After drying his hair and changing into his sleepwear, he still couldn’t find her. He went downstairs to look for her.
Halfway down the stairs, his steps suddenly paused.
Jiang Yunshu, with her long black hair shining, sat beside Grandma Fu, her eyes clear and bright, smiling softly. The atmosphere around her seemed warm and happy.
Fu Chengze watched her from a distance for a moment before walking down the stairs.
Grandma Fu saw him coming and teased, mimicking a line from the TV show, “Haven’t been apart for a while and you’re already coming to find your wife? Can’t bear to be apart?”
Jiang Yunshu followed Grandma Fu’s gaze and happened to look at Fu Chengze at the same time.
Her ears turned a little red. “Grandma’s reciting lines from the show.”
“Mm.” Fu Chengze glanced at the TV screen before sitting down next to Jiang Yunshu on the sofa.
Grandma Fu continued teasing, “Xiao Shu, go upstairs and sleep. He’s come down to find you.”
Jiang Yunshu smiled helplessly, “Grandma, I was just getting into it, and you’re asking me to go?”
She turned to Fu Chengze and said, “I’m not tired yet, you go rest. I’ll stay with Grandma to finish watching.”
Fu Chengze casually placed a soft pillow behind Jiang Yunshu’s back. “It’s still early.”
Jiang Yunshu was a little surprised. “You want to watch it too?”
“Hmm?” Fu Chengze turned his gaze from the TV screen to Jiang Yunshu’s face.
Jiang Yunshu replied, “Most of the audience for these historical family dramas are women, so I thought you’d find it boring.”
Fu Chengze responded, “I’ve watched TV dramas with Grandma before.”
“Oh.” Jiang Yunshu nodded and turned to continue discussing the plot with Grandma Fu.
As the two of them got caught up in their conversation, Fu Chengze leaned back against the sofa, slightly tilting his head, watching Jiang Yunshu’s soft profile. His eyes slowly softened.
After talking for a while, Jiang Yunshu reached for the glass cup on the table.
She made a forward motion to grab it, but Fu Chengze was one step ahead and picked it up for her. “Do you want some water?”
Jiang Yunshu looked at him. “Mm.”
“It’s a little cold. I’ll go pour you some hot water.”
Fu Chengze returned shortly with a cup of warm water and handed it to Jiang Yunshu.
She took the cup and, as usual, thanked him.
Just then, the scene on the TV showed the male protagonist triumphantly returning from a battlefield and passionately kissing the female protagonist after being apart for so long.
Jiang Yunshu lowered her gaze and drank from the cup.
The atmosphere did feel a little awkward.
Fu Chengze looked down at her, his gaze landing on her warm, soft lips. He noticed how she was holding the glass, her teeth biting the rim, clearly a bit uncomfortable, and the corner of his mouth involuntarily curled up.
When the kiss scene ended, Jiang Yunshu sighed in relief.
Time passed, and the drama still wasn’t over.
Grandma Fu, who had taken a nap earlier, was still in high spirits, but Jiang Yunshu was starting to feel tired.
Fu Chengze noticed Jiang Yunshu yawning and leaned close to her ear, asking softly, “Tired?”
His breath brushed against her ear, and as she turned her head, his soft lips grazed her ear.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she shook her head. “I’m fine.”
Fu Chengze lowered his gaze, noticing the moisture in her eyes. His voice softened. “If you’re tired, you should go to sleep.”
They were sitting very close, and Jiang Yunshu could feel his warm breath lightly brushing over her forehead, bringing a slight tingling sensation.
“This episode is almost over. Let’s finish it, then you can rest.”
“Mm.” Fu Chengze nodded.
Jiang Yunshu stretched her neck and turned her head left. She lost control of the movement and accidentally bumped her head against Fu Chengze’s shoulder.
Fu Chengze turned to look at her, then raised his arm to pull her into his embrace.
Jiang Yunshu froze for a moment, instinctively tensing up.
The man had just showered, his hair falling slightly over his forehead. His warm body pressed against hers, with a fresh and calm scent that felt familiar.
Once she came to her senses, Jiang Yunshu relaxed, her head resting against his chest. A small smile unconsciously tugged at her lips.
The ending theme song came on, and Grandma Fu finally noticed the couple hugging on the sofa.
“It’s getting late. One of you still has work tomorrow, and the other is pregnant. You two should go to bed.”
Jiang Yunshu raised her head and sat up straight. “Okay, Grandma, good night. You rest early too.”
“I’ll watch the next episode preview, then go back to my room.” Grandma Fu urged them, “Go upstairs and rest.”
Jiang Yunshu was indeed tired. After a quick trip to the bathroom, she lay down in bed.
Fu Chengze turned off the lights and lay down next to her.
The night was quiet and windless, the moonlight outside as serene as water, and she slept without any dreams.
