Chapter 73
In her previous life, Lu Baiwei married Yin Zhihe, who was impotent. However, Shen Guixiang struck first, spreading rumors that Lu Baiwei was infertile, calling her a “hen that doesn’t lay eggs.”
Not only did Shen Guixiang take the lead, but she also leveraged the influence of Yin Zhihe’s second brother-in-law, a commune cadre, to bribe doctors at the commune hospital. They falsified evidence to confirm Lu Baiwei’s supposed infertility.
Although Lu Baiwei fought back, with the hospital’s testimony against her, no one believed her side of the story.
After ruining her reputation, Shen Guixiang manipulated her in various ways, forcing her to go to the black market with Yin Zhihe to earn money.
In her previous life, if not for her connection with Shen Junqian, Yin Zhihe wouldn’t have been able to make his first fortune. Even after Yin Zhihe became successful, much of it was due to her strategies and plans.
Before Yin Zhihe went to Hong Kong to inherit family wealth, Lu Baiwei had died mysteriously.
After her rebirth, she kept replaying the events in her mind. The doctors had said the tumor in her abdomen was benign and not life-threatening. How could she have died on the operating table?
She had a vague feeling that her death was connected to Yin Zhihe.
It was safe to say the Yin family owed her too much.
Taking whatever was buried under the Yin family’s property and claiming it as her own gave Lu Baiwei no guilt whatsoever.
Almost as soon as He Ting finished speaking, Lu Baiwei responded, “You’re absolutely right. We should think of a filthy place.”
“How about we dig up the Yin family’s latrine?”
The latrine?!
He Ting was stunned.
“Baiwei, that was just a guess!”
“But I trust your guess.”
Lu Baiwei adopted a trick she’d learned from the younger He siblings. She clung to He Ting’s arm and brushed against it affectionately. “In my heart, He Ting, you’re the smartest.”
“I believe whatever you say.”
In the darkness, He Ting’s expression grew a little twisted.
He, who was usually so confident and articulate, found himself stammering.
“You… you really want to dig?”
“Yep!”
With a serious expression, Lu Baiwei continued to shower him with sweet words, just like He Yunqi would.
“Zhou Yanfeng said you’ve read so many books, and I trust all your deductions.”
“Honey, I believe in your judgment.”
Who could resist being called “honey”?
In the darkness, he looked at his little wife, her eyes shining like stars in the night.
He Ting gave in!
Dig up the latrine?
Fine, let’s do it!
Thankfully, the Yin family’s latrine wasn’t one of those massive, reeking pits.
Fortunately, the toilet at the Yin family’s place wasn’t the kind with a big cesspool.
Instead, it was a large, rough ceramic jar, with two wooden planks laid across the top.
Lu Baiwei held the flashlight for him as He Ting endured the stench, digging up the dirt around the jar and moving it aside to dig deeper. Sure enough, they unearthed a locked iron box.
After cleaning off the grime, he smashed the lock with a shovel. The flashlight beam revealed a golden glow.
He Ting was completely stunned.
The two were newlyweds, deeply in love and inseparable. He couldn’t resist when Weiwei clung to him, calling him “hubby” and praising him as the best.
What man could resist such words from his woman?
So, He Ting resigned himself to her whims.
Even though they unearthed the iron box and sensed it held something valuable, they didn’t truly believe the Yin family had buried a chest full of gold.
But now, staring at the open box filled with neatly stacked gold bars, He Ting was speechless.
“Weiwei, I’ll bury the jar back, and we need to leave the Yin family quickly.”
Lu Baiwei, pinching her nose to block the smell, stood guard by the unearthed box. “No need to put it back exactly as it was—someone else will take the blame anyway.”
The “someone else” naturally referred to Lu Jianguo and Liu Chunhua.
That jar was simply too smelly.
He Ting had to admit his wife made sense.
He only moved the jar back to its original position, loosely refilled the dirt around it, replaced the planks on top, and carried the box as they left the Yin family’s toilet.
They were cautious, turning off the flashlight as they walked back to the brigade clinic.
Once the excitement of finding gold wore off, Lu Baiwei began yawning from exhaustion.
He Ting, feeling sorry for her after a sleepless night, decided to hide the box first and check it later.
“The box can wait; let’s secure it for now.”
For safety, He Ting chose not to bring the box home.
The foundation for their new house was being laid nearby, and loose soil there wouldn’t arouse suspicion.
He used his shovel to dig a hole within the foundation area and buried the box there.
He didn’t plan to touch it again anytime soon.
After all, the clinic belonged to the brigade and was destined to become a proper infirmary. He and Lu Baiwei weren’t short on money anyway. He had already applied for a plot to build a three-room house.
Once the house was complete, it would belong solely to him and Weiwei. At that point, they could dig up the box behind closed doors, examining the gold bars to their heart’s content.
In the early hours of the morning, after washing up, Lu Baiwei avoided returning to the inner room, not wanting to disturb Tang Yunling or Ranan. She climbed into He Ting’s new cot in the main room to rest.
Exhausted from the night’s escapades, the two fell into a deep sleep, cuddled together.
In the morning, Lu Baiwei was awakened by an itch.
Something was crawling into her collar.
Something was crawling into her neck, causing a ticklish, tingling sensation.
Lu Baiwei opened her eyes to find Ranan lying by her pillow, blowing softly on her neck and tickling her.
Seeing Lu Baiwei awake, the little one looked at her with big, watery eyes and pouted pitifully.
“Auntie is bad! You don’t want Ranan anymore.”
First thing in the morning, Lu Baiwei was utterly charmed by the little one’s pouting act.
She momentarily forgot she was sleeping on the cot in the main room. Stretching out her arms, she hugged Ranan and planted a big kiss on her cheek.
“Nonsense!”
“How could Auntie not want Ranan when you’re so adorable?”
“Auntie loves Ranan the most.”
“Hmph, liar!”
Little Ranan huffed and pointed at He Ting’s hand resting on Lu Baiwei’s waist.
“Auntie ran away and climbed onto Uncle’s cot.”
Still groggy from sleep, Lu Baiwei didn’t immediately notice anything off.
Feeling the warmth on her waist, she followed Ranan’s pointing finger and instantly blushed.
Was she just caught red-handed by the little one?
What was even more infuriating was the culprit behind all this wasn’t the least bit ashamed. Woken up by the commotion, he lay there stifling a laugh.
Such a troublemaker!
Lu Baiwei tried to pacify Ranan. “I was kidnapped by a bad guy.”
“I don’t like him,” she added, nuzzling Ranan’s face. “Auntie loves Ranan the most.”
“Really?”
Ranan’s bright, curious eyes sparkled as she pressed for confirmation. “More than Uncle? Auntie loves Ranan more than him?”
“Yes, Auntie loves Ranan the most. I don’t like Uncle at all.”
Hearing this, little Ranan was satisfied. She snuggled sweetly against Lu Baiwei’s neck.
“Then Auntie has to protect Ranan so the bad guy doesn’t take me away.”
The so-called “bad guy” Lu Baiwei referred to had no intention of getting out of bed. Instead, he tightened his grip on her waist and leaned closer from behind.
She pushed him away and reassured Ranan, “Alright, Auntie will kick the bad guy out.”
This was too much!
From the inner room, Tang Yunling finally couldn’t bear to listen any longer.
