Chapter 109: Team Leader Lu, You’re So Talkative
The first boat to lead the rescue team wasn’t the rubber dinghy where Lu Yunzheng was, but another rescue worker who was more familiar with the location.
Despite the heavy rain above, the water surface remained relatively calm, and their progress was fast.
During this swift paddling, Luo Qianyun could only hold onto the handrails to steady herself, having no time to think about anything else.
Soon, they reached the area with a strong current.
This part of the water was rather fast, and paddling upstream was more difficult.
But if they passed this, they would cut their journey in half, which is why they took the risk.
While paddling against the current, Luo Qianyun could see how difficult it was for them, but they overwhelmed nature’s resistance with incredible speed.
Finally, they successfully crossed and reached the victorious shore.
“We’ve finally passed the toughest part. From here on, paddling should be easier,” Old Chen sighed in relief.
Of course, they couldn’t afford to slack off during the task.
The effort spent paddling against the current had drained their energy, so Lu Yunzheng instructed everyone to slow down a bit.
The rubber dinghy had collected quite a bit of water, and Luo Qianyun grabbed a cup to bail it out.
Even while doing this, she still held onto one handrail, afraid she might fall out by accident.
When Lu Yunzheng turned around, he saw Luo Qianyun diligently scooping out water like a busy little bee. His eyes softened with a smile. “Hold steady, we’re almost there.”
Hearing his words, Luo Qianyun quickly grabbed the other handrail. “I’m holding on.”
“If you’re scared, there’s no need to sit so far away. I can protect you if you’re closer,” Lu Yunzheng said.
“No need, sitting closer would distract you,” Luo Qianyun replied seriously.
Seeing her no-nonsense attitude, Lu Yunzheng said no more.
When they arrived at the orphanage, they saw the director waving at them from a distance.
Luo Qianyun was about to grab the medical kit to disembark when it was taken from her by Lu Yunzheng. “You can’t even stand properly, and you want to carry something? Come here.”
Looking at his outstretched hand, Luo Qianyun had no choice but to place her hand in his.
Unlike the warmth of his palm, her hand felt cold.
“You brought cold medicine, right? You should make yourself a cup when we’re done,” Lu Yunzheng said, holding her cool hand, worry in his voice.
“Got it, Team Leader Lu. You’re so talkative,” Luo Qianyun said carefully as she disembarked.
Lu Yunzheng: “Now you think I’m talkative?”
“Of course not. I know you’re just concerned about me,” Luo Qianyun smiled, accepting the medical kit and waiting aside.
After the other three medical personnel disembarked, Lu Yunzheng led them to the orphanage while the others secured the dinghy.
The director, a white-haired man about seventy years old, hurried over with an umbrella as they approached.
But the strong wind and rain almost blew his umbrella away, and Lu Yunzheng quickly stepped forward to steady the elderly man. “Let’s go inside first.”
As soon as they entered the orphanage, Luo Qianyun noticed several curious little eyes peeking at them from a distance. She immediately smiled and waved at them.
Lu Yunzheng handled the rescue negotiations with the director, while Luo Qianyun and the others wasted no time. After removing their raincoats and life jackets, they got ready to work.
The caretaker, a woman in her sixties, had already prepared a small space for them to work in.
The four of them worked together, and after completing basic disinfection and sterilization, Luo Qianyun planned to learn about the situation at the orphanage.
“There are 18 orphans here, 6 boys and 12 girls. In addition to Director Geng and Caretaker Liu, there’s a 52-year-old handyman and a 38-year-old limping assistant,” Lu Yunzheng explained.
“How do you know all this so clearly?” Luo Qianyun asked, surprised by how detailed his knowledge was.
“I reviewed the rescue information before coming,” Lu Yunzheng replied.
Luo Qianyun nodded. After all, they couldn’t come here without knowing how many people they were rescuing.
She then asked Director Geng for more details about the orphanage’s condition and started assessing the priority of treatment.
Soon, she followed Director Geng to a room on the second floor of the orphanage. The electricity was out, and unlike the first floor, there were no emergency lights, making the room very dark.
As soon as they entered, Luo Qianyun noticed a faint smell.
“Sorry, Dr. Luo. We’ve had a water and power outage these past few days, so the smell isn’t very pleasant,” Director Geng apologized.
“It’s okay, Director Geng. You mentioned someone was injured? Is it a leg injury?” Luo Qianyun asked, using her flashlight to look around.
“Yes, right ahead…” Director Geng said, leading the way.
At that moment, Luo Qianyun’s flashlight unexpectedly shone on the face of an adult man, startling her.
Upon hearing her exclamation, Director Geng quickly reassured her. “Don’t be scared, Dr. Luo. Xiao Cheng may look fierce, but he’s a good kid. He’s helped the orphanage a lot.”
As if reacting to the voices, the man weakly called out, “Director…”
“Xiao Cheng, don’t be scared. The doctor’s here. She’ll treat you soon,” Director Geng comforted him.
Luo Qianyun approached to assess his condition and saw his swollen, broken leg. “It’s too dark here to treat it. Let the rescue team move him downstairs first.”
The man, lying on the bed, immediately thanked her. “Thank you, doctor…”
Luo Qianyun couldn’t shake the feeling that something rough brushed against the back of her hand as she turned to leave, but she didn’t pay it much attention, assuming it was just something she accidentally touched.
As they were leaving, Luo Qianyun couldn’t help but ask, “Director, do the children live here too?”
“We have many children, so there are two rooms just for them,” Director Geng explained.
As they left the room, Luo Qianyun asked, “Does Mr. Cheng live with the children? Isn’t that a bit inconvenient?”
“I thought about that, so only the boys live with him in this room,” Director Geng replied.
Luo Qianyun found it hard to remind him, but she thought it was dangerous for boys to share a room with a strange adult man. Maybe she would suggest something once she got to know the situation better.
After going downstairs, Luo Qianyun updated the rescue team on the situation. Lu Yunzheng immediately took people upstairs to move the man, who was lying on a folding bed, down.
By then, Luo Qianyun was already preparing saline solution, tweezers, iodine, and other necessary supplies. When the team returned downstairs, she put on her gloves.
Meanwhile, Lu Yunzheng scanned the area and noticed someone was missing. “Isn’t there still a handyman here?”
At the mention of the handyman, Director Geng’s expression slightly darkened.
