Chapter 116 : Early Check

Fang Xiaoluo packed her things and took Shen Haiping straight to the bus station in Qingshi Town.

When they arrived at Honghe Village, Fang Xiaoluo saw Tang Jingxian was already waiting there.

Fang Xiaoluo pulled Shen Haiping out of the car and walked over to greet her. “Sister Tang, you’re here so early.”

Tang Jingxian was dressed just as before clean, elegant, and capable.

“I drove here from Jiangcheng, it’s quite close,” Tang Jingxian replied. She looked down at Shen Haiping, feeling that although he was the child Fang Xiaoluo had taken care of that day, there was something different about him.

Fang Xiaoluo said, “Sister Tang, let’s go to my house first.”

“I didn’t say hello to them. I guess no one is home right now,” Fang Xiaoluo added.

As they reached the village entrance, the villagers greeted Fang Xiaoluo warmly.

The children were running around and chatting excitedly.

Fang Xiaoluo took out some candies from her pocket and handed them to the children. The kids were so happy that some of them even ran off to the fields to tell Zhang Xinyan and Fang Shijun the news.

“Xiaoluo, You look really good.”

“Xiaoluo, is this your friend? She looks like a city dweller.”

Fang Xiaoluo nodded, “Yes, she’s my friend.”

“Look at Xiaoluo’s friends. Each one looks more noble than the last. Some even drive their own cars.”

“Yeah, rich people don’t need to pretend. Xiaoluo is really lucky.”

Fang Xiaoluo exchanged a few words with them. Tang Jingxian, who was driving, followed her directions, and they headed straight to the house.

As expected, there was no one at home. Fang Qiang had gone to Jiangcheng for work, Fang Jie and the others had gone to school, and Zhang Xinyan and Fang Shijun were likely busy working in the fields.

Fang Xiaoluo placed the things she brought back on the table and went to pour water for Tang Jingxian.

Tang Jingxian took the cup and looked around the house. “Is this your mother’s home?”

“Yes,” Fang Xiaoluo replied. “Does it seem a bit like a poor family?”

Tang Jingxian sat down and said, “No, it’s fine. It’s actually been cleaned up really well.”

Fang Xiaoluo noticed that Tang Jingxian was a genuinely nice person. Despite looking like someone who had a luxurious life in the city and owning a large restaurant, she showed no sign of disdain when she arrived.

“Come on, I’ll take you to see my cabbage field.”

Fang Xiaoluo took Shen Haiping’s hand and led Tang Jingxian to their field.

Tang Jingxian admired the lush greenery all around and said, “The scenery in Honghe Village is beautiful.”

Fang Xiaoluo smiled, “After all, it’s not something you can see in the city. It’s nice to come to the countryside sometimes and breathe some fresh air.”

Before they reached their fields, Fang Xiaoluo spotted Zhang Xinyan and Fang Shijun walking toward them, looking hurried.

“Mom!” Fang Xiaoluo called out and waved.

Zhang Xinyan saw her and quickened her pace, with Fang Shijun trailing behind. “Xiaoluo, why are you back today? Your father and I rushed back as soon as we heard the news.”

Fang Xiaoluo smiled. “Mom, I brought guests with me today.”

Zhang Xinyan looked somewhat embarrassed when she saw Tang Jingxian, who stood beside Fang Xiaoluo with her distinguished presence.

Tang Jingxian smiled and said, “Hello, Auntie. My name is Tang Jingxian. Xiaoluo can call me sister, and you can just call me Xiao Tang.”

Zhang Xinyan was taken aback, noticing Tang Jingxian’s noble demeanor. She felt somewhat unworthy, as she was just an ordinary farmer.

Tang Jingxian smiled at Zhang Xinyan and said, “Auntie, it’s just a title, there’s nothing wrong with it. Let’s just say it’s settled.”

Zhang Xinyan looked down at Shen Haiping, who was being held by Fang Xiaoluo, and felt that the child seemed a little different today.

“Haiping looks taller and a little fatter than the last time you brought him here.”

Shen Haiping looked up and said, “Hello, grandma.”

Zhang Xinyan was stunned. “Xiaoluo, he… Haiping… he…”

“Mom, I’ll explain later,” Fang Xiaoluo said. “For now, let’s go see the cabbages we’ve grown.”

Upon hearing “cabbage,” Zhang Xinyan’s mood lightened. “Xiaoluo, you don’t know, I watered the field just like you said, and the cabbage has grown so well! I was planning to pick a few to send to you, but now that you’re here…”

The cabbages the Fang family had planted early were now very large. They had formed into clumps and looked solid and appealing.

Tang Jingxian crouched down to inspect the vegetables. “Xiaoluo, your cabbages really look great.”

Fang Xiaoluo took a knife from Fang Shijun and cut one. “Then let’s taste this cabbage at noon.”

After returning home, Fang Xiaoluo pointed at the items on the table. “Dad, Mom, these are from my mother-in-law. She also asked me to bring you something good.”

Zhang Xinyan, busy looking for tea leaves, responded, “Your mother-in-law still thinks of us. She’s older than us, and we haven’t visited her yet.”

Fang Xiaoluo washed two apples. “We’re family, after all. There will be plenty of chances to visit her in the future. If her legs weren’t so bad and she didn’t mind moving around so much, I would have brought her here.”

Fang Xiaoluo cut the apple and brought it to the table. “Sister Tang, have some apple.”

Tang Jingxian reached out, took a piece of apple, and handed it to Shen Haiping, before taking one for herself.

Shen Haiping said, “Thank you,” and began eating in small bites.

Zhang Xinyan asked, “Xiaoluo, what are you going to do with these cabbages? You stay at home, I’ll go out and see if anyone is selling tofu.”

Fang Xiaoluo said, “Mom, no need. This is the easiest way to eat them, just wash the cabbage and shred it for me. I’ll go knead the dough, and we’ll make noodles for lunch.”

“Sister Tang, please sit for a bit. I’ll get everything ready.”

Tang Jingxian didn’t mind. She had come today to see the cabbage fields, but more importantly, she was eager to taste the cabbage.

“Okay, you all go ahead and work. I’ll stay with Haiping.”

The family was busy in the kitchen, and Fang Xiaoluo noticed that Fang Shijun’s movements had become more agile.

“Dad, how have you been feeling lately?” she asked.

Fang Shijun answered cheerfully, “Xiaoluo, listen to me, it’s much better now. After you had someone bring me a bottle of medicine last time, I stuck with it. I’ve stopped walking in circles these days, and I even feel like I can control my hands and feet a bit better.”

Fang Xiaoluo was delighted. “I brought more medicine today. Dad, you should drink it. I really hope you get better.”

“With my daughter here, I’m sure I’ll get better,” Fang Shijun said with a smile.

Zhang Xinyan pointed toward Shen Haiping, who was sitting quietly in the room, and Fang Xiaoluo briefly explained what happened when Xu Zhigang and his men tried to take the child.

Fang Shijun frowned. “How could their family be like this? It’s outrageous!”

Fang Xiaoluo said, “I don’t know if this could be seen as a blessing in disguise, but now I just hope everything will go in a good direction from here.”

Meanwhile, the door to the Fang family home was wide open, and a few people were lying outside the courtyard wall.

Wang Hongfang pointed at Fang Xiaoluo and said to the people around her, “Yan Mingyi, did you see clearly? The woman in the kitchen is Fang Xiaoluo.”

Yan Mingyi wiped his nose nonchalantly and asked, “That pretty girl is bullying you?”

Wang Hongfang felt uncomfortable with Yan Mingyi’s praise of Fang Xiaoluo’s beauty, but since she needed his help, she didn’t want to argue. “Yes, she’s been bullying me. You have to help me.”

Yan Mingyi said, “Okay, I’ll take care of it for you, but not today. If the villagers see me coming with you, I won’t be able to explain it later.”
