“Miss, miss…” The female bus conductor gently tapped Shen Zhihuan on the arm, unable to suppress the smile on her lips.
The bus was noisy, like a flock of sparrows chattering away, yet this girl could still manage to fall asleep. What kind of nerves did she have?
“Have we arrived?” Shen Zhihuan yawned, covering her mouth, and instinctively glanced around. Seeing the bus completely empty except for herself and the conductor, she quickly stood up.
“Everyone’s gone. What do you think? Falling asleep on the bus first thing in the morning—you’ve got talent,” the conductor said with a laugh, stepping aside to let her through.
Shen Zhihuan gave her an embarrassed smile, thanked her, and got off the bus.
The original owner of her body had never been to the county, so Shen Zhihuan couldn’t draw on any useful memories. Stepping out of the bus station, she was essentially blind. After a brief scan of her surroundings, she decided to head in the direction of the tallest buildings.
As she walked along the narrow, old streets, Shen Zhihuan curiously took in the unevenly spaced, low-tiled houses. It wasn’t until she turned a couple of corners that the roads began to widen and the scenery opened up.
Department Store…
A department store in this era!
Though it lacked the luxurious decor of modern-day department stores, it was a significant step up compared to supply and marketing cooperatives.
With her empty basket on her back, Shen Zhihuan explored each floor. Clothing, stationery, daily necessities, straw mats, fabrics, bicycles, sewing machines, televisions, refrigerators…
After a full round, she had a basic understanding of prices in this era.
Returning to the first floor, she headed straight for her target destination.
Before she even reached the fruit counter, the fresh, sweet scent of fruit mixed with a faintly sharp odor wafted into her nose.
Watermelon, plums, and peaches were 50 cents per catty. Grapes were 80 cents per catty. Lychees were three yuan per catty…
Meanwhile, pork was only 50 cents per catty.
Fruits were definitely a luxury item in this era.
Judging by their appearance, these fruits would only qualify as bargain-bin specials in modern times.
“Hey! Why are you standing so close? If you damage anything, can you afford to pay for it?”
A shrill voice came from behind the counter.
Looking up, Shen Zhihuan saw a round female salesperson glaring at her with her nose practically in the air.
“What, is your fruit made of fart? Just looking at it can ruin it? Should we worry that a strong breeze might blow it all away?” Shen Zhihuan chuckled coldly.
She’d often seen complaints online about snobby sales staff in luxury stores. Who would’ve thought she’d run into a real-life version on her second day here?
Sales staff in this era usually had connections to get their jobs, and working in a department store required even stronger ties. Naturally, people like this often acted superior.
“You sickly twig, reeking of sweat—can’t afford it? Then get lost! Don’t hang around here and ruin the place for others!” The chubby saleswoman sneered, her disdain evident.
“I reek?” Shen Zhihuan raised her eyebrows, smiling.
“Before accusing others of smelling bad, why don’t you lift your own arm and take a sniff? With that stench wafting off you, people can probably smell you from five miles away. If I were you, I’d skip the snacks and buy a few bars of soap instead.”
One of the sales staff standing aside watching the fun couldn’t help but burst out laughing, which caused the other female sales staff to laugh as well.
The chubby saleswoman’s face turned a deep shade of red. Her uncle was the department store’s supply manager, giving her some sway to bully her colleagues, none of them liked her. Fearing retaliation, they rarely dared to speak out against her.
Working in a department store was a prestigious job in this era. It came with a high salary and excellent benefits. Even a temporary position was highly sought after, with families scrambling to secure one.
If a household had a someone working in a department store, matchmakers would line up to knock on their door.
