Chapter 37
Zhao Guifen glanced at her: “What can we do? She’s been like this for years. The eldest son, that white-eyed wolf, favors her. Who can do anything to her?”
Zhou Jiaojiao was also speechless. Bai Xiuxiu was simply too good to her. Why did she get all the good things? And not only did she have a dowry when she got married, but she also got things mailed to her during holidays? She had enjoyed all these benefits, she should have died sooner.
“Mom is right, it’s all the eldest brother and eldest sister-in-law’s fault. Mom, the reason Sister-in-law is so tough is because she gave birth to twins, right? It must be those two kids that make Big Brother listen to her.”
Zhou Jiaojiao said softly. She didn’t say anything else and went back to her room.
Zhao Guifen listened and started to think. But after thinking for a while, she didn’t have the courage. No, she had to think more about it.
Bai Xiuxiu went back to the room and unpacked the package. Inside were two cans of brown sugar, two packs of the Big White Rabbit candies she had mentioned before, two small pieces of clothing for the children, both in sky blue. There were also some loose candies and some tickets. Apart from those, there were some dried shrimp and seafood. All of them were ready to eat, perfect for a snack. Bai Xiuxiu hugged her two children onto the kang: “These are all from your grandma and your big aunt. They mailed them to us. Remember to be grateful to your big aunt and grandma, okay?”
The two children didn’t understand what being grateful meant, they only knew that their big aunt and grandma would give them delicious food. They liked their big aunt and grandma.
Yueyue looked at her beloved Big White Rabbit and couldn’t help but ask Bai Xiuxiu: “Mommy, when will Big Aunt and Grandma come to see me and brother?”
“You guys be good, they’ll be here soon.” Bai Xiuxiu said with a smile, brushing them off.
Then she handed the various dried seafood products to Wang Qinghe, who was responsible for putting them away in the cabinet. She locked the candy in a chest on the kang.
Their room wasn’t big, but it was well-arranged. As you walked in, the kang was on the left. Their heated kang was by the window, making it convenient for her to look outside. The kang could fit five people.
However, their family only had four people. Now, the two children were on one side, and she and Wang Qinghe were on the other. They would draw a curtain in the middle at night.
On both sides were chests made of water elm. These were her grandmother’s dowry for her mother, which she had inherited later.
One chest was for clothes and fabric, and the other was for her and the children’s snacks, as well as the family’s money. They were both locked with a padlock, and there was another layer of lock inside.
Along the wall, a set of cabinets was placed on the floor to store the seafood her sister sent, as well as other miscellaneous items and her clothes.
On the right side of the room, against the wall, was their table. However, most of the time, the large table was only used for teacups. The small kang table was their family’s favorite!
Now that everything was put away, Bai Xiuxiu put the remaining snacks and candy in the chest.
Seeing the eager faces of her two children, she couldn’t help but give each of them a Big White Rabbit candy: “One each, then go out and play after you finish. Remember, don’t go too far, don’t leave the yard, or you won’t get any more candy. No new clothes either! Mommy won’t hug you anymore.”
Bai Xiuxiu scowled, threatening and scaring her two children.
The children were still young, and the Wang family had a history. She didn’t feel comfortable letting them out of the yard.
Although the two children didn’t know why, they were quite obedient when they heard that their mother wouldn’t hug them or give them candy.
With everything put away, Bai Xiuxiu started to think about what to send back to her sister and her mother this year.
She opened the letter. It was written two months ago, and the things were mailed over a month ago. The next batch of things hadn’t arrived yet. They said they were afraid of sending too much at once, which would cause her trouble.
Her sister didn’t like writing, and her mother was the same. So the letter didn’t have any heart-wrenching emotions. It simply listed the things sent, and then reminded her to live a good life and not suffer any injustice.
Even so, Bai Xiuxiu’s eyes welled up with tears.
She remembered that in her previous life, after she died, her mother and sister rushed back within a few days after hearing the news. Her mother cried until she fainted, and fainted until she woke up. She wanted to die with the Wang family, and like Wang Qinghe, she believed that this family was responsible for her death. Even Wang Qinghe was beaten by her mother a few times.
Originally, her sister and mother were going to take the two children away, but in the end, Wang Qinghe persuaded them not to. However, they would come back every year on Qingming Festival. Even when they weren’t allowed to visit the grave, they would still come back to take a look.
Thinking about all this, Bai Xiuxiu’s tears flowed freely.
“Wife, what’s wrong? Did something happen with Mom and your sister?” Wang Qinghe was startled when he saw her crying.
Previously, Xiuxiu never cried over the letters her sister and mother wrote. She would always happily talk about how long the things would last, then throw the letter aside. Why was she suddenly crying?
Wang Qinghe didn’t like seeing his wife cry. Whenever she cried, he would feel uncomfortable. But he didn’t have any great abilities to help her avoid any injustice. A sense of helplessness would make him even more desperate.
He reached out and tentatively wiped her tears.
Bai Xiuxiu was startled, but she quickly got used to it. She grabbed his hand and used it as a handkerchief.
“Mom’s fine, I just haven’t seen them in a long time, and I miss them.” Bai Xiuxiu explained in a muffled voice, trying to avoid worrying him.
“Then we’ll go see them later.” Wang Qinghe promised.
Once they split the family, he would find a way to take Xiuxiu wherever she wanted to go!
Bai Xiuxiu laughed.
Seeing that she wasn’t crying anymore, Wang Qinghe’s heart felt less uncomfortable.
Recently, all his thoughts were on that dream.
In the dream, the person who pushed Xiuxiu into the water never turned around. He couldn’t see their face! If he could see it…
The chicken stew didn’t take too long to cook, and it was time for dinner. Bai Xiuxiu and Wang Qinghe took their two children to the main room.
The chicken and potato stew was already on the table, a full bowl of potatoes with a small wild chicken. The whole room was filled with the aroma.
Zhao Guifen, for once, didn’t add chaff to the flatbread. She made corn flatbread, which was considered a rare treat in this family.
Zhao Guifen gave each person in the family two flatbreads. When she reached the family of four, her face darkened.
The flatbreads had to be divided equally among everyone, which was a ridiculous rule that Bai Xiuxiu, the unfortunate daughter-in-law, had insisted on. It had caused a huge commotion, but in the end, they had to accept it.
The chicken pieces were limited, but Zhao Guifen divided them very evenly. Even the chicken legs were cut into six pieces, one for each family, leaving it up to them to decide who would eat them.
