Chapter 55: Scene outside the city
Mr. Wan San’s body trembled and he clenched his hands unconsciously.
Su Yin said, “Master, my uncle’s appearance is hindered, and he may be stained in your eyes.”
The man snorted coldly, but did not give up, “Lift it up if you are told.”
Su Yin hurriedly explained, “Master, don’t be angry. My uncle was bullied since he was a child because of his appearance and figure.
He is a little afraid of people. Don’t be offended.”
He turned to Master Wan San and said, “Uncle, please raise your head and give me a look. Don’t be afraid that the official is a good man and won’t hit you.”
Wan Sanye responded tactfully, his body trembling slightly, but he slowly raised his head following Su Yin’s words.
When the man saw that ugly face, he took a step back in fright and uttered a curse word, “Fuck you!”
Mr. Wan San immediately lowered his head sadly.
The man calmed down and waved to them, “Let’s go, let’s go.”
“Thank you, sir.”
Yang Dachuan hurriedly drove the mule cart away.
Anyone who has a car in the back will be severely ripped off.
As soon as Mrs. Zhang passed the inspection, she said with a droopy face, “I told you that you shouldn’t come to the city.
Look at the amount of money going into the city and the amount of money going out of the city.
After going back and forth like this, you didn’t buy anything. And you spent so much money.”
“There are some people who don’t have much money in their pockets, but they are very poor. Why don’t you see her pity us?”
Seeing that Mrs. Zhang was going too far, Yang Shuixian shouted angrily, “Mother-in-law, can you please stop?”
“I told you, do you care about anything I say? Are you the mother-in-law, or am I the mother-in-law?”
Mrs. Zhang felt sorry for the money, even though she knew this would happen. Offend people, but just can’t control it.
She felt uncomfortable if she didn’t say it.
“Shut up, please.” Old man Zhang glared at his wife fiercely.
Su Yin naturally heard the comments, but she didn’t pay attention because she was already shocked by the scene outside the city.
Her eyes fell on the reddish-brown traces on the land outside the city. There were corpses everywhere bodies with severed limbs and arms lying quietly outside the city, while crows landed on them and pecked at the remains.
Yang Dashan and others were also shocked by the scene outside the city gate, their eyes widening in disbelief.
Yang Fu was the first to react, “Where are my father and the others?”
The voice woke up the others from Xinghua Village. Mrs. Zhang’s face turned pale.
She was frightened for a moment, but then she felt a sense of relief. Fortunately, she had followed the Su family into the city yesterday; otherwise…
The other daughters-in-law of the Zhang family, who originally had some opinions, now felt scared looking at the grim situation.
“Third Ancestor!”
“Daddy!”
The ten families searched separately, but no one wanted to find someone familiar among the corpses.
“Uncle Yang Liu,” Yang Rong’s sad voice called out.
Everyone ran towards the edge of the woods in the distance and saw three corpses lying on the ground. Each corpse was known to everyone present.
“How could this happen?”
“Where have they all gone?”
Old Mrs. Zhang looked at the many burned corpses. “They can’t all be burned.”
Both Yang Shuixian and his wife glared at her.
Mrs. Zhang wanted to say something else, but she sensed the gravity of the situation and didn’t dare to open her mouth.
Su Yin looked around and observed the traces in the area. As she walked into the forest, she noticed many broken bushes and obvious signs of human movement in the grass.
The closer she got to the edge, the more the bushes had been trampled, while the signs of disturbance decreased the further in she ventured.
“The Third Grandfather and the others should have escaped from here,” she concluded.
Yang Fu hurried over, squatting down to examine the ground. “There are blood stains here. They should have escaped from this spot.”
From the messy footprints and the bodies that were not taken away, it was evident how hurried they were when they left. The situation at that time must have been extremely dangerous.
Half of their ten households had mule carts or horse-drawn carriages, while others had flatbed carts.
Mrs. Xu’s family had few possessions, so she had placed her belongings on Su Yin’s mule cart, freeing up her cart to help transport the bodies of Uncle Yang Liu and the others.
After finding the main group, they would deal with the affairs of Uncle Yang Liu and the others.
They followed the traces along the way.
Back in time four hours ago, the people of Xinghua Village were running desperately into the jungle.
Everyone had only one thought: run, run, run. Only if they ran fast enough and far enough could they have a chance to survive.
Some fell along the way, and despite their knees and arms being bruised and bloody, they didn’t dare to cry out in pain, let alone stop.
Along the way, many people fled.
Under the leadership of Yang Lizheng, individuals were retrieved one after another.
A group of people huddled under a huge rock, breathing heavily to calm themselves down.
“Has anyone seen my man?”
Yang Laoliu’s wife walked around in the crowd, but she couldn’t find her husband.
Someone else stood up and said, “My husband isn’t here either. Has anyone seen him?”
“My man is missing too.”
Yang Lizheng hurriedly stepped forward, trying to reassure them, “Don’t worry, they may have fled in another direction.”
“What should I do then?” Wife Yang Liu asked, her voice filled with anxiety.
Yang Lizheng immediately dispatched a dozen young people with minor injuries to go out in batches to look for the three missing individuals.
After searching for a long time, they found no sign of them.
Many people began to suspect a possibility, which made the atmosphere in the camp grow heavy.
Someone lowered their voice and said, “Do you think Yang Liu and the others didn’t make it out?”
The expressions of those around him changed slightly, but no one refuted this notion because they also harbored the same suspicion in their hearts.
There was a brief silence, and some couldn’t help but complain, “Why didn’t we go to the city? If we had gone to the city, maybe we wouldn’t have encountered this kind of thing.”
“All our belongings are gone. How will we live in the future?”
“It would have been better if we went into the city.”
“Why didn’t Li Zheng go into the city this time?” Some began to blame Li Zheng for his decision.
Others couldn’t bear to hear such remarks and immediately retorted, “How can you blame Li Zheng? At that time, Li Zheng said he wanted to go to the city, but some people disagreed.
After we raised our hands to vote, more than half disagreed. If you want to blame someone, blame yourselves for not agreeing!”
The person who spoke was loud enough for everyone in the camp to hear clearly.
“I remember it was Dazhuang’s father who was the first to object. If you really want to assign blame, then Dazhuang’s father should take the fall.”
Dazhuang’s father bristled at having his name called out. He didn’t need to speak; his wife was the first to stand up and refute.
“It’s shameless to say this! If I really wanted to live in the city, why didn’t I follow them before? Why did I stay? I want to ask, who tied the rope to prevent you from leaving?”
“Why didn’t you speak up before something happened? You said that if something goes wrong, you won’t blame yourself, but you’ll blame the men in your family. That’s really shameless.”
“Now that I’ve lost my property and money, it’s all the result of my unwillingness to spend money. Don’t blame me,” others chimed in.
