Chapter 64: Robbery of Water
This girl is quite talented in cooking.
Seeing that he was enjoying his meal, Xiao Yanggui snorted at him, immediately turning his head away to approach Su Yin.
Su Yin was grilling the second and final batch of skewers.
The hare wasn’t big and had little meat on it, but she even roasted the bones.
After the second batch was ready, Su Yin distributed it to her two cousins and sister-in-law.
She took three skewers and walked over to Madam Xu’s family, handing them the roast rabbit.
Madam Xu waved her hands repeatedly, “No, I can’t take it.”
Their family didn’t have enough, so how could she, an outsider, have the nerve to ask for it?
Niu Niu, in Madam Xu’s arms, stared at the roasted rabbit with her big, watery eyes, filled with longing, but she was obedient and did not reach out or speak, quietly nestling in her mother’s embrace.
“I promised Niu Niu before, and I can’t break my promise.”
Su Yin knelt down to look at Niu Niu. “Here, sister said she would give Niu Niu some meat.”
Niu Niu wanted to stretch out her hand but hesitated, glancing at Madam Xu.
Madam Xu glanced at her daughter and said gently, “Take it.”
Niu Niu happily accepted it without needing further encouragement. She thanked Su Yin with a sweet voice, “Thank you, sister.”
“Well, Niu Niu is so good.” Su Yin touched the little girl’s tender face.
As soon as Su Yin returned, she shot Mr. Wan Sanye a resentful look and said, “A skewer of barbecue is not enough to fill the gap between your teeth.”
If he had known better, he wouldn’t have proposed it, and it would have been difficult to make enough.
“I’ll give you all the rabbit meat. It’s not enough to stuff your teeth, but you should at least have a taste.”
Mr. Wan San shrugged his shoulders and did not continue to argue about this issue. He leaned forward and asked, “Girl, what is the seasoning you poured into the basin earlier? Is it your family’s unique secret recipe?”
“Of course.”
“Are you considering selling it?” Wan Sanye tried to inquire.
“Not for sale.”
He said with a look of pity, “That’s such a pity.”
We have to get up early tomorrow, so everyone went to bed early. Su Yin, Su Mu, and Su Baozhu spread out two straw mats.
The three of them slept more comfortably and did not need to be so crowded.
Third Master Wan, his second uncle, and the others were sleeping outside.
It was bright in the morning, and everyone got up early.
When Wan Sanye heard the noise, he raised his eyelids to take a look. When he saw them going out again with bamboo tubes, he sighed in his heart, turned over, and continued to sleep.
There was a faint light in the sky, and people came back one after another.
Wan Sanye looked at everyone’s dejected expression and asked in a low voice, “What’s wrong?”
Su Baozhu sighed, “There is very little dew here. After a long time of hard work, we didn’t collect much.”
“It’s better than nothing,” Mr. Wan San said with relief.
He didn’t say a word. The further back you go, the harder it will be.
They didn’t light a fire in the morning, so they ate dry food and set off on the road.
The deeper they went into Nanping County, the more sad faces appeared on everyone’s faces.
They could see that the trees on both sides of the official road were dead in patches, which was very dry.
“Why is Nanping County so serious?”
“No wonder several villages we encountered were abandoned.”
“They must have started fleeing a long time ago. If they don’t leave here, they will die sooner or later.”
“I only heard that it was serious in Yunzhou before, but I didn’t expect it to be so serious in Nanping County.”
Su Baozhu looked at the abandoned village, with worries about the future in her eyes.
Facing the depression in front of him, Wan Sanye was very calm, and his voice did not fluctuate at all.
“The three places in Yunzhou are more serious than what you see in front of you. Starvation is everywhere there, and it is common to change children for food.”
“Nanping County is considered a good place.”
That’s good, so what’s not good?
Su Baozhu couldn’t imagine it.
Su Yin probably understood it, but without seeing it with his own eyes, she couldn’t understand it deeply.
“It’s not just those three places. In fact, Yuzhou and Meizhou are not much better. When an official deceives his superiors, he doesn’t care about the life and death of the people below.
Yunzhou cannot hide it, so it will explode. If it continues like this, don’t say you have no way to survive, and we are not much better.”
The world has been corrupted to this point, and what they have seen is just the tip of the iceberg.
The sun was shining brightly, and Yang Li was letting everyone hide under the shade of the trees to rest.
Su Yin helped Su’s mother to sit under the tree. The shade was a little cool, which dissipated a lot of heat from her body.
She picked up the water bag and took a sip. There was not much water in it. After a few more sips, it would bottom out.
While they were resting, a group of people came up the official road. These people were in ragged clothes, and each of them was as skinny as firewood.
Many of them were holding wooden sticks in their hands, and they were walking forward with difficulty.
As soon as their figures appeared, Su Yin immediately picked up the weapon and called out several cousins and uncles.
Yang Lizheng reacted quickly and immediately shouted to everyone, “Take out your weapons and protect your belongings.”
The men took out various instruments, including wooden sticks, axes, and hatchets, and stood ready.
The group of people also saw them, especially when they noticed that they were carrying a lot of luggage, including ox carts and mule carts. Their eyes shone with interest.
Someone spotted the water bag hanging on Su Baozhu’s waist and shouted excitedly, “They have water!”
The person pointed at Su Baozhu, and the group of people followed his gaze, their expressions changing as they focused on the water bag.
Suddenly being stared at by a group of people like wolves and tigers made Su Baozhu feel as if she were the meat on their chopping board, and a sense of fear washed over her.
“Snatch her!” someone shouted.
Two thin men rushed towards Su Baozhu, and the others followed suit, coming towards Su Yin and the rest.
In the eyes of this group, Su Yin and her companions were easy targets weak women with a mule cart.
Picking a persimmon to pinch it softly was a principle they understood well.
Su Baozhu’s face turned pale with fright, but she clenched the hatchet tightly in her hand. As they got closer, her panicked eyes hardened bit by bit.
She didn’t want to die; she didn’t want to be hacked to death by the mob like in her previous life.
She wanted to live!
She would kill anyone who stood in her way.
Mother Su was also scared, but she held the knife tightly in her hand and did not take a step back.
Wan Sanye was frightened by the scene as well. The eyes of the people in front of him glowed green, like evil wolves staring hungrily, making his hair stand on end.
Su Yin said to the three of them, “I will block the first wave. Mom, you and my sister-in-law stand behind me.
If anyone gets around me, you two work together to kill them. Fatty, you are responsible for the property’s safety. If anyone crosses our path, you are responsible for killing them.”
“Remember, being kind to the enemy is cruel to yourself. Don’t be afraid. They have no weapons and are not as strong as us.
As long as you are calm enough, you can do it.”
Mother Su and Su Baozhu nodded heavily.
Wan Sanye also nodded.
Yang Hua came over with an axe, “Yinyin, let me help you.”
Su Yin was not pretentious, because she understood that there would only be more people attacking them than the second uncle’s side.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Yang Hua stood at the front with Su Yin, holding an axe, facing the most ferocious and intensive wave of people.
