Chapter 49: Care

Wen Qingchuan was still wearing his military uniform, a light sheen of sweat glistening on his forehead.

He had come in a hurry, and upon opening the door, he was taken aback to find so many leaders in the ward at such an hour.

After a brief moment of surprise, Yang Junzhi spoke first: “Qingchuan is here; your wife just asked about you.”

Wen Qingchuan entered the ward and lowered his eyes, noticing that Shen Sangyu’s once-white face was slightly swollen, and one of her legs was wrapped in gauze, propped up on a wooden stick.

“What did the doctor say? Are there any broken bones?” he asked, concern lacing his voice.

Almost immediately, he regretted asking; Shen Sangyu’s leg looked as swollen as a mummy.

“Don’t worry, the doctor said it’s nothing seriousjust take good care of yourself when you go home.”

Shen Sangyu’s expression turned serious as she continued, “Have you dealt with it? I didn’t have time to tell you before, but Zhou Xinghua had me kidnapped mainly because of Zhuang Youliang.

She was suspended from her job and later came to me, asking you to let her go, but I didn’t agree. I didn’t expect that she would take revenge on me.”

She looked down, feeling disdain for Zhou Xinghua. The thought of her serious injuries made her worry about her future as a translator.

Pouting, she said, “Go and tell the police whatever the law requires. I won’t forgive or reconcile!”

Concern crept into her heart as she thought of Zhou Xinghua’s father’s position in the military.

Would her resolute stance put Wen Qingchuan in a difficult position?

As she pondered, she heard Wen Qingchuan say, “I’ve already told Director Li. You focus on taking care of your injuries; I’ll handle the rest.”

Wen Qingchuan’s tone was gentle and comforting, but inside, he was burning with rage.

When he arrived, Zhou Xinghua had not explained why she kidnapped Shen Sangyu.

Now that Shen Sangyu mentioned it, he felt a wave of guilt wash over him.

He knew the Zhou family was no good, but he had still allowed Sang Yu to get hurt.

Yang Junzhi, standing nearby, was furious as he heard this: “Sangyu, the leaders of the military region take this matter very seriously.

They will definitely explain everything to you and ensure it doesn’t affect you or Qingchuan.”

Seeing that the couple still had things to discuss, Yang Junzhi gave them a few more instructions before leaving the hospital with his guards.

Once everyone left, the ward fell into a serene silence.

Shen Sangyu lay on the bed, her delicate hands gripping the sheets as she gazed at Wen Qingchuan, not blinking.

Wen Qingchuan glanced at the time it was already four o’clock in the morning. The corridor lights were still on, and the sound of footsteps echoed from time to time.

“Wen Qingchuan…” Shen Sangyu suddenly called out.

“Yeah.”

Looking at the man before her, his clothes disheveled and face weary, she said sincerely, “It’s a good thing you found me today; otherwise, I would have really died.”

Her soft voice only deepened Wen Qingchuan’s guilt. “I shouldn’t have reported Zhou Xinghua without considering the consequences.

If I had thought it through, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt.”

He recalled how Zhou Xinghua had claimed in the family compound that Shen Sangyu was the one responsible for Zhuang Youliang’s death.

Even when he tried to remain calm, anger simmered within him. He didn’t want to see Zhuang Youliang sacrifice his life, but during a mission, they had stepped on a bomb in a minefield. Although he escaped due to his fitness, Zhuang Youliang had been injured in the explosion and died before reaching the hospital.

He had been injured as well, but he was the only one to hear Zhuang Youliang’s last words.

Because of those words, he had taken extra care of Zhuang Youliang’s wife and children, yet in the end, his own wife had almost died.

“It’s not your fault,” Shen Sangyu said suddenly, her tone serious. “Rather than saying that you forced Zhou Xinghua to say this, it’s better to acknowledge that her character is so vicious.

The fault lies with her poor family upbringing that led her to do such bad things. If I make her unhappy in the future, do you believe that the same thing could happen again?”

Wen Qingchuan remained silent.

Shen Sangyu wasn’t sure how much he had absorbed. The anesthesia had made her drowsy, and she stifled a yawn: “I have to go to bed.”

Wen Qingchuan quickly reacted, adjusted the bed, covered her with a quilt, then went to the independent bathroom to take a shower.

He lay down on the empty bed next to her.

The next morning, Shen Sangyu was awakened by pain. As she stirred in her sleep, a sharp sensation shot through her leg, like thousands of nails piercing it. She could feel swelling and discomfort.

“Hiss…”

Shen Sangyu opened her eyes. Her legs felt numb, and as she moved slightly, the pain intensified, nearly causing her to cry out.

Before she could dwell on the pain, Wen Qingchuan suddenly appeared beside her, gently pressing on her legs.

“Does your leg hurt? I asked the nurse last night, and she said it might hurt for a day or two after the surgery.”

“Will it hurt for that long?” Shen Sangyu cried, feeling overwhelmed by the pain as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Wen Qingchuan was startled. He instinctively used his thumb to wipe away her tears. “I’ll ask if I can get you some painkillers!”

He opened the door and stepped out, returning shortly after with several doctors in white coats.

The doctor who examined her checked his watch. Shen Sangyu noticed it was only seven o’clock in the morning, meaning she had only slept for three hours.

“It will definitely hurt after the anesthesia wears off. This is normal. Just bear with it,” the doctor said, observing Shen Sangyu sweating from the pain.

Finally, he relented, “You can take painkillers. I’ll prescribe them for you when I get back to the office.”

Shen Sangyu breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you, doctor.”

As the doctor left the ward, Wen Qingchuan brought a basin for Shen Sangyu to wash up.

Curious, she looked at Wen Qingchuan as he busied himself. “Aren’t you going to training?”

Wen Qingchuan thought to himself that given her condition, how could he focus on training?

But to ease her worries, he replied, “I’ve asked for seven days off from the army, so I don’t have to go to training.”

“What about the big competition?”

“I’ll let Shen Xu lead the team.”

Seeing Shen Sangyu frown with worry, Wen Qingchuan felt a sense of relief. “Those guys have almost finished training.

I was injured and couldn’t play before, so this is a good opportunity for Shen Xu to gain some experience.”

Wen Qingchuan wrung out the handkerchief. “Does your leg still hurt?”

“I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t hurt, but it definitely doesn’t hurt as much as it did just now.”

Shen Sangyu had just woken up, and her head was swinging between dizziness and wakefulness.

She felt herself growing sleepy again without saying a word.

Wen Qingchuan recalled what the doctor said that feeling sleepy, dizzy, or nauseous were all normal. When he saw her heavy eyelids, he decided not to press her further. “Go to sleep.”

Shen Sangyu leaned back against the pillow, and as she was about to drift off, she murmured, “Wen Qingchuan, I definitely won’t be able to submit the manuscript normally this time. Remember to ask for leave for me, and…”

Before she could finish, she had already fallen asleep.
