Chapter 8
Nearly Scared to Death
Shen Yuebai quickly walked out and looked at Li Chengye with a cold gaze. “Who are you?”
Li Chengye saw that Shen Yuebai was in military uniform and felt somewhat intimidated. “I—I’m looking for Xu Jiajia.”
Xu Jiajia leisurely walked out and fixed her gaze on Li Chengye. “What do you want? If I remember correctly, we’re not really acquainted, are we?”
Li Chengye had only heard of Xu Jiajia’s name from Song Ran and had never seen her in person. Now that he did, his jaw nearly dropped in shock.
He stammered, “Y-You’re Xu Jiajia?”
Had he known this fierce woman was Xu Jiajia, he would have never come.
Xu Jiajia looked at Li Chengye with displeasure. “What do you want with me?”
Li Chengye was so scared he nearly lost his senses. He immediately shook his head like a rattle drum. “N-No, nothing. I’ve got the wrong person.”
God, he’d been completely set up by that bastard Song Ran!
Xu Jiajia didn’t believe him for a second. She kept her stern face and stepped forward. “Speak.”
Li Chengye, trembling, dropped to his knees, crying as he spoke, “It’s not me, it’s that bastard Song Ran who sowed discord. He said you’re a scammer who swindled six hundred yuan from his family. I thought it was true and came here to scold you.”
Xu Jiajia snorted coldly. “Do you really think they’d just give me six hundred for no reason?”
He was so gullible, getting used as a pawn without even realizing it!
Once Xu Jiajia pointed it out, Li Chengye belatedly understood. “Right, why would anyone give six hundred to break an engagement? Maybe there’s something I don’t know.”
Before Li Chengye could ask, Xu Jiajia spoke first. “His father had an affair with his sister-in-law, and my father caught them. To silence us, his father paid the money.”
Li Chengye felt like a thunderclap had struck his head. He was stunned. “My god, what is this development? Even TV shows wouldn’t dare make this up!”
Realizing he had been tricked, Li Chengye was furious and about to go crazy. He gritted his teeth. “Song Ran, you bastard, I’ll make you pay!”
After a moment, he thought of another question and turned to Xu Jiajia. “Since they paid hush money, why are you telling me this? Isn’t this going back on your word?”
This time, it was Shen Yuebai who answered. “Song Ran’s uncle-in-law is dead, and his father is one of the suspects. Upon investigation, we found out he has connections to the enemy.”
Li Chengye was even more terrified. His face turned as white as paper. “Enemy… connections to the enemy? How could he dare?”
Xu Jiajia was a little surprised. “You guys work fast. You’ve uncovered so much in less than a day!”
Shen Yuebai didn’t take credit. “It’s my father’s doing. He provided crucial leads. Liu Kui said that once the case is over, he’ll apply for a reward for my father.”
He glanced at Li Chengye. “As for the enemy, let’s not spread this around yet.”
Li Chengye was too frightened to speak. If the enemy found out he knew, they might even kill him to silence him.
He felt like his head wasn’t screwed on properly. He touched his neck, looking miserable. “I won’t say anything, don’t worry!”
After a pause, he asked, “About the affair, is it okay to talk about that?”
Shen Yuebai nodded.
On the way back to the city,
Li Chengye was completely out of sorts. Several times, he almost crashed the bike.
Xu Jiajia, who was on her way to the town to buy wedding supplies, was riding along with him. Seeing him look like he had lost his mind, she worried he might ride straight into a puddle and irritatedly reminded him, “Can you ride properly? You look like you’re about to die—who are you showing that to?”
Li Chengye, who had already been beaten by Xu Jiajia once, now had a deep psychological scar. The moment he heard her voice, he snapped back to attention. “I’m riding properly, don’t hit me!”
Xu Jiajia was speechless. “When have I hit you?”
When Li Chengye brought it up, he couldn’t help but feel wronged. “It was at the state-owned restaurant—you pushed me!”
Xu Jiajia recalled the incident and, in her view, she was in the right. “Who told you to take sides? Not knocking your teeth out was already quite generous!”
Li Chengye glanced sympathetically at Shen Yuebai, who was riding ahead. “…”
Marrying such a tigress—would there be any good days ahead?
Upon reaching the town,
Xu Jiajia and Shen Yuebai went to buy wedding supplies, while Li Chengye went to find Song Ran at the factory. “Uncle, could you call out to Song Ran from the next workshop? I need to talk to him about something.”
Li Chengye had visited the steel factory a few times, so the security staff knew him. “Sure, take a seat. I’ll go get him.”
In no time, Song Ran came out, and Li Chengye immediately punched him. “You bastard! Your dad has done all these despicable things, and you still dare to act like the victim in front of me?”
Song Ran, caught off guard by the punch, felt a surge of anger. “Li Chengye, you damn idiot, are you looking for trouble?”
Li Chengye threw another punch. “You’re the one looking for trouble! Your dad slept with your sister-in-law, and that money was hush money. Why didn’t you mention that?”
“You bastard! You didn’t speak up because you wanted me to make this bigger, so the thieves could target Xu Jiajia’s family’s money, right?”
“Unfortunately, I’m not falling for it. I’m just here asking a few questions and haven’t spread it around yet!”
Li Chengye vented all the anger he had been holding from Xu Jiajia on Song Ran.
Song Ran’s eyes darkened with malice. “…”
The scoundrel took the money and didn’t keep his word!
The security staff watched in awe, this drama was quite exciting!
Song Ran, embarrassed, got into a fight with Li Chengye. The two men grappled like shrews, either grabbing each other’s faces or pulling at hair.
The security guards quickly intervened, pulling them apart. “Stop fighting and talk it out!”
Li Chengye’s face was livid, his eyes burning with fury. “Song Ran, we’re not done here! No, actually, you’re the one who’s done for!”
Song Ran thought Li Chengye was referring to the affair involving his father and didn’t take it seriously. He shot Li Chengye a contemptuous look. “I didn’t tell you to cause trouble for Xu Jiajia. You’re the one who’s stupid. What’s that got to do with me?”
Li Chengye chuckled bitterly. His finger trembled as he pointed at Song Ran. “Just like father, like son, huh? Song Ran, I’m waiting for your retribution!”
Those words marked the end of their friendship.
As soon as Li Chengye left, the police arrived to question Song Ran.
He stared at them blankly. “My father killed someone?”
The police nodded. “Yes, come with us.”
The shock was too much for Song Ran. He couldn’t react for a long time, and only when he arrived at the police station did he finally speak up. “Who did my father kill?”
The police clarified. “He killed your uncle-in-law. Not only that, but he was also involved with enemy agents.”
This statement struck like a thunderbolt, hitting Song Ran so hard he felt dizzy, his legs turning weak. “He killed someone… enemy agents… How could he dare?”
The police sneered. “Enemy agents—what’s so strange about killing people?”
Although Song Ran didn’t directly participate, as a family member, he was still under investigation.
If he had knowledge of the situation and didn’t report it, he’d also face legal consequences.
On the other side,
When Shen Yuebai’s stepmother found out he was getting married, she threw down her hoe in a fit of anger and stormed up to Shen Dazhu, trying to stir up trouble. “Your son’s getting married, and you, as his father, know nothing about it? In his eyes, you’re not even as important as a stranger!”
Shen Dazhu, completely confused, asked, “Who’s getting married?”
