Chapter 4: Su Daji Reborn
Su Taotao had intended to ask about Chenchen’s situation in detail, but then thought it was not urgent. She didn’t want to expose too much. When Zhou Linglan carried him away, she casually mentioned to let him take the origami back to play with.
Zhou Linglan smiled and said, “Just leave it in your room. I have plenty more in mine. In the past, Zhengtu’s father liked folding these things. Zhengtu was influenced by him and can fold anything, but I’m not as talented. I only learned a little.”
Zhou Linglan looked at Chenchen with a loving expression and patted his head. “Our Chenchen is just as clever as his father, he learns quickly.”
In the past, Su Taotao didn’t like hearing her talk about such things. To be more precise, she didn’t care to talk to them at all and always acted arrogantly, with her nose in the air. When she had money, she would go to the town for meals, and it was normal for them not to meet all day. When she didn’t have money, she would show up precisely at meal times, always complaining about the food or even fighting with the child over it. This was the first time she spoke calmly like this.
Actually, when Su Taotao had just married into the family, she wasn’t like this. If she had revealed her true nature from the beginning, Fu Zhengtu wouldn’t have married her. In fact, it was only after Fu Zhengtu left that she became this way.
Zhou Linglan was very happy with Su Taotao’s change but feared that she would revert to her old self after a while.
Su Taotao nodded. She agreed that Chenchen was far smarter than most children.
Su Taotao rubbed Chenchen’s head and asked him to go rest with his grandmother.
She did want to stay with him, but right now, Chenchen was still a bit resistant toward her. It would take time.
After they left, Su Taotao immediately went to find a mirror to see what “she” looked like.
When she looked into the mirror, she almost dropped it. Now she understood why Chenchen was so beautiful—at least half of his looks came from the face in the mirror.
This face actually resembled her own from her previous life. A small face, smooth skin, a high, straight nose. However, her eyes in her previous life were rounder and bigger, giving her a cute and innocent look, while the face in the mirror was strikingly like Su Daji reborn, with captivating fox eyes that slightly tilted upward. With just a gentle glance, they exuded all kinds of charm.
Chenchen’s long, thick eyelashes were inherited from the original owner.
But in this era, looking like this wasn’t exactly a good thing. Fortunately, the original owner didn’t know how to dress up. She had her hair tied in a thick braid and her bangs were heavy, which dulled her beauty. Her energy also seemed a bit lackluster, reducing the impact of her beauty. Plus, her unpleasant personality made her beautiful looks not lead to any scandals.
Su Taotao looked down at her body, which seemed to have developed quite well, given the poor food quality. Her face and other areas had little flesh, but her waist—despite having given birth—was still very slim. It seemed that all the fat had accumulated in those two areas.
Su Taotao covered her face. With this figure and face, she could easily captivate men. It was rare but unfortunate—she was born in the wrong era.
Su Taotao decided to keep the original owner’s dull sensibilities. She might even go so far as to make herself look a bit plainer, so no one would feel she was attractive. After all, her family was either too old or too young, and if some unscrupulous bully took an interest in her, she wouldn’t be able to protect herself. It was better to be cautious.
Next, Su Taotao surveyed her possessions.
She was really poor. According to the original owner’s memory, she searched every place where money could be hidden and found only thirteen yuan and eighty-five cents, which was in a rarely used tin box. There were also a few scattered receipts, but no food or meat coupons.
Su Taotao couldn’t help but laugh and cry. This “fortune” was probably forgotten by the original owner. What could thirteen yuan and eighty-five cents do in this era? It might buy ten pounds of meat. If the original owner remembered there was any money left, it would have been spent already.
Su Taotao sighed and decided to clean up the messy room inside and out.
The original owner was really sloppy. Just take the pillowcase—it was almost as black as a rag. Maybe the original owner didn’t let Zhou Linglan wash it, and Zhou Linglan didn’t dare touch her things. The pillowcase even had a layer of oil from her hair!
Thinking about how she had slept on it for so long, Su Taotao muttered “Resources are scarce, don’t waste food” a hundred times before managing not to throw up the fish porridge she had just eaten.
The clothes were also a mess, mixed up with seasonal clothes from spring, summer, autumn, and winter, piled into one heap. Su Taotao dug through it. Compared to the patched-up clothes of this era, the original owner had a lot of clothes, though the styles were quite eye-catching.
Wasn’t this era supposed to value simplicity and plainness? Why were there so many colorful clothes?
Su Taotao looked down at the clothes she was wearing—they were all brightly colored, like someone had spilled a paint palette. She picked through them for a while before finding a green military jacket and two white shirts.
The big padded jacket was simple enough—it was the most common military coat and looked a bit old. She guessed it was brought along when they moved to the countryside.
Su Taotao picked it up and saw that some areas were even moldy, and one of the pockets was bulging out.
She squeezed it and felt something strange—this wasn’t the usual cotton feel. It seemed like something had been sewn inside.
After some thought, Su Taotao found a rusty pair of scissors and carefully cut open the seam. When she pulled out what was sewn inside, she was stunned…
