Chapter 60 : Sending Bedding
After entering the house, Su Mo first went to the west room and placed the chestnuts, walnuts, and pine nuts that she had collected and dried two days ago in the corner of the room.
She then emptied the basket of chestnuts and walnuts onto the floor, spread them out, and let them dry slowly.
When she went to the supply and marketing cooperative, she planned to buy a few sacks, then go to the commune’s carpenter shop to have a wooden rack made to store things. She would then load everything onto the rack and eat slowly.
After finishing this, Su Mo went to the wing room where she kept all the miscellaneous items. She found three medium-sized jars for pickling vegetables, dug up some mud from the vegetable garden, and planted the three wild ginseng plants in the jars, placing them under the daylight. She also transferred some of her supernatural powers to help them root better.
She then moved the jars to the back window of her bedroom so that when the window was open during the day, they could get some sunlight in the morning.
After finishing everything, Su Mo boiled water for a bath. By the time she finished washing clothes and eating, it was already past eight o’clock in the evening.
Su Mo had gone out early this morning for a walk around the mountain and felt a bit tired. Since she needed to get up early the next day, she decided to rest and went to bed.
The next day, Su Mo got up again around four o’clock, went to the west room, and filled a straw basket with dried chestnuts and walnuts, estimating the weight to be about five or six pounds, and put them into her space. After quickly washing up, she grabbed her backpack and set off in a hurry.
Fortunately, Lu Changzheng’s house was at the end of the village, in a relatively secluded location, close to the road leading up the mountain. Since no one kept dogs these days, Su Mo had it easier.
When she was about ten minutes away from the meeting point, Su Mo took out the quilt and Mo Yurong’s cotton clothes from her space and put them into the backpack. The backpack could only hold the quilt and cotton clothes, so she had to carry the mattress in her hands.
She then took out the straw basket with chestnuts and walnuts, grabbed a new gray towel, cut off the label, wrapped three or four buns in it, and stuffed them into the mattress.
She put on the backpack, carried the straw basket, and held the mattress, setting off for the meeting place.
When Su Mo arrived, Su Tingqian and his wife had been waiting for a while. Seeing their daughter coming with so many things, they were both startled and hurried over to help her.
They felt so sorry for Momo, thinking she must be very tired from carrying all that up the mountain.
“Mom and Dad, have you been waiting long?” Su Mo asked.
“It wasn’t long, we just arrived,” Su Tingqian replied.
The couple looked at the pile of things with some concern.
Yesterday, their daughter had mentioned she had prepared some quilts and cotton clothes for them. They thought it was just a thin quilt, but looking at the size of it, it was a rare large one. Quilts were hard to come by these days. Where did she get this?
And the quilt cover was already sewn, could it be…
“Momo, you didn’t bring all the bedding your in-laws gave you for your wedding, did you?” Mo Yurong asked.
“No, don’t worry. I prepared it myself,” Su Mo said.
Su Mo then took the buns wrapped in the towel from the mattress, took one for herself, and handed the rest to Mo Yurong, ready to explain everything while they ate. Yesterday, there had been no time to explain many things.
“Mom and Dad, let’s talk while we eat.”
As they ate the buns, Su Mo explained everything to them, from the 400 yuan betrothal gift Lu Changzheng gave her, to how much dowry she had prepared, to how she was living alone now, etc.
Once the couple understood everything, they breathed a sigh of relief.
“But Momo, you brought a quilt over. It’s fine if you’re living alone now, but if a guest comes, it will be obvious,” Mo Yurong said, still a little concerned.
But when they had been sent down, they didn’t have time to prepare for winter. They had hoped that Geng Changqing would send someone to help, but they didn’t expect their daughter to have already prepared it for them.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get another bed when the time comes and tell them my relatives at home like it and want one.”
Su Mo thought this would work. If not, she could ask Geng Changqing for help. As the secretary, he would surely help. She felt that there wouldn’t be a problem.
The fact that the three of them were there must have been helped by Geng Changqing, meaning he wouldn’t stand by and ignore her family’s situation.
“Is that okay?” Su Tingqian asked, not fully understanding the collective economy of the communes.
“Sure, there’s an educated youth in our area who did just that,” Su Mo reassured her father with a small white lie. She would check with Ma Xiaojuan later to clarify the situation.
Only then did Su Tingqian feel relieved.
Su Mo then took out Mo Yurong’s cotton coat from the backpack and said, “Mom, look, this is the coat I made for you. How does it look?”
Mo Yurong took the cotton coat and almost cried.
Although it was made of dark brown coarse cloth and looked plain, it was exactly what they needed for this time of year. It felt thick and would surely keep them warm. It was practical and low-key.
Her daughter had really grown up and considered every detail.
“Okay, okay! Mom really likes it. Thank you, Momo,” Mo Yurong choked up.
Su Tingqian was also moved. Their daughter was much better than they had imagined.
“Dad, you have one too, but I didn’t know your size before. I’ll measure it today and send it to you in a couple of days,” Su Mo said, taking out a ruler from the backpack to measure her father’s size.
“Okay, okay,” Su Tingqian said as he stood up to be measured, adding, “Don’t rush, take your time.”
“With a sewing machine, it’s quick and easy,” Su Mo reassured him.
Su Tingqian had no strong feelings for his son-in-law, but from Momo’s words, he could tell he still cared for her.
In the countryside, they had built a new house, given a dowry of 400 yuan, bought bicycles and sewing machines, and hosted over 20 tables for their wedding banquet. This was considered very good.
I heard from Momo that he even handed over the savings. It’s clear how much he values Momo. As long as he treats her well, that’s all that matters.
Su Mo wrote down the measurements and said, “Mom and Dad, take the bedding back quickly, or someone will see it when they go up the mountain. You can also take this towel back, it’s gray and won’t attract attention.”
“These are chestnuts and walnuts I picked from the mountain. You can take them back and eat them too.”
“By the way, do we trust that middle-aged couple? If we do, I’ll send them directly to the cowshed next time. It’s not particularly safe to meet them outside.”
The main concern was that Su Tingqian and his wife might encounter villagers on their way back from the mountain. Su Mo, however, was different. She had space and supernatural abilities, and her senses were much sharper than ordinary people. If someone came, she would be able to detect it quickly.
“What your Grandpa Zhang said is credible. That couple are good people,” Su Tingqian replied.
“Okay, then I’ll deliver the things directly to the cowshed next time. I’ll throw pebbles at the door first, then imitate a few bird calls. If everything’s okay, you can open the door for me. If something’s wrong, don’t come out. I’ll wait for ten minutes, and if you don’t come out, I’ll leave. The next day, we’ll still meet at six o’clock in the same place,” Su Mo explained.
“Okay,” the couple nodded.
Although they didn’t want their daughter to go to the cowshed, what she said made sense. It wasn’t safe outside, and since their daughter had thought of everything, they agreed.
Su Mo helped the couple pack their things into their backpacks, compacting them as much as possible so they wouldn’t stick out.
“Go back soon, Mom and Dad. I’ll bring you some food next time,” Su Mo said. As for what else they might need, she planned to check the cowshed and slowly buy more for them.
She also thought about Grandpa Zhang, she would see if he had any cotton-padded clothes, and if not, she would buy some for him.
After waving goodbye, the couple carefully made their way downstairs with their belongings on their backs, avoiding any potential encounters with others.
“A Qian, Momo has really grown up,” Mo Yurong sighed on the way.
She had previously worried that such a huge change would overwhelm her daughter. Although her daughter hadn’t lived luxuriously, she had been pampered and had never experienced hardship, let alone doing farm work.
Unexpectedly, her daughter not only adapted so well but also had the energy to take care of them while managing everything on her own.
“My father-in-law is right, there are no cowards in the Su family. My daughter wasn’t obvious before, but when faced with a big challenge, she’s more resilient than most people.”
Su Tingqian also sighed. “Yes, it’s me who implicated you and your daughter.”
How can a person grow up overnight? It’s because of the circumstances.
“A Qian, don’t say that. We’re a family, and we share the joys and sorrows,” Mo Yurong comforted him, understanding how much pressure he had been under recently.
Fortunately, they didn’t encounter anyone on the way, and the couple returned to the cowshed with their things on their backs.
Zhang Zhen had been waiting at the door for a long time. When he saw the couple arrive, he let them in and quickly closed the door again.
“Did you see anyone?” Zhang Zhen asked.
“Yes.” Su Tingqian nodded, heading to the room where they slept with his backpack. “They brought us thick bedding, as well as a straw basket of chestnuts and walnuts.”
In addition to the shed for cows and donkeys, the cowshed had three adobe houses, one for each of the two couples, Zhang Zhen, and his secretary. The kitchen was a separate thatched house with a simple stove, but there was no iron pot, so they could only cook in large clay pots.
Zhang Zhen looked at the large quilt they took out of the backpack with surprise.
“This child is like her grandfather. She’s quiet most of the time, but when it matters, she can do great things,” Zhang Zhen said.
Su Tingqian stuffed the quilt into the broken water tank used for storing things, covered it with something, and said, “Uncle Zhang, when it gets cold, you can use this quilt to cover yourself.”
Uncle Zhang had always been good to their family. While the younger ones could endure the cold when it snowed, Uncle Zhang, being older, couldn’t.
Zhang Zhen smiled and waved his hand. “We’ll talk about it when the time comes.”
If the little girl really had her grandfather’s personality, she would surely get him a thick quilt when she saw that he didn’t have one. There would be no need for Tingqian to worry about it.
