Chapter 77 : Family Gossip

After Liu Yuzhi went outside, she quickly started to argue, and Lu Guihua came out to fight back. The two of them became more and more heated, and soon they were in a full-blown quarrel.

Su Mo stood there awkwardly, unsure whether to leave or stay.

Li Yue’e, who was making steamed buns, heard the increasing argument between her two daughters-in-law. She came out holding a rolling pin, about to scold them.

Seeing Su Mo standing aside, unsure of what to do, Li Yue’e immediately held back the scolding she was about to deliver and waved at Su Mo.

“Third daughter-in-law, come here. Don’t worry about them, let them quarrel.”

This resentment had been building up for a long time, so it’s better for them to get it all out. If not, it would turn into a bigger issue. She wanted to hear where all their resentment was coming from.

Su Mo hurried over when she heard Li Yue’e calling her, following her into the kitchen.

She silently thanked her mother-in-law for saving her life,she really wasn’t good at mediating fights.

Well, her mother-in-law said to let them quarrel, so let them do it! Su Mo just wanted to hear some gossip.

Although she thought that, she still pretended to be embarrassed and said, “Wouldn’t this be a bad idea?”

“There’s nothing wrong with it. The two of them always quarrel, so it’s better to let it all out at once,” Li Yue’e said. “If I had known earlier, I would have built separate houses so everyone could be apart and it would be quieter.”

For Li Yue’e, it was nothing, but the main concern was her husband’s health. If the two daughters-in-law quarreled often, he would probably be very upset hearing it.

“What are you doing here?” Li Yue’e asked, thinking that Su Mo had come to see her.

“The sweater I’m knitting for Changzheng is almost done. I came over to compare it with Big Brother,” Su Mo said.

“Oh, so fast. Let me see.”

Su Mo took the sweater out again. When Li Yue’e saw it, her eyes curved with a smile.

“What a clever hand! So beautiful! The third child will definitely like it.”

It was clear that this sweater was knitted with a lot of care. Li Yue’e had never seen anyone knit such a beautiful sweater. The third son was very lucky to have married a wife who loved him so much.

After looking at it, Li Yue’e told Su Mo to put the sweater away quickly, as the kitchen was full of smoke and she didn’t want it to get dirty.

Su Mo helped Li Yue’e light the fire while listening carefully.

The two of them started with the issue of who was taking advantage, and the argument quickly expanded from money to work points, and then to who did how much work, who ate more of what, and all sorts of trivial matters were dug up. It seemed like the grudge had been simmering for a long time.

Su Mo felt very sad. Fortunately, she didn’t have to live with them. Otherwise, with them seeing each other every day, how could there be no conflicts?

The only consolation was that no matter how much they quarrelled, it never involved their third room. It seemed that everyone knew that Changzheng hadn’t taken advantage of anyone.

Lu Xingjun and his two sons returned with a basket of eggs, talking and laughing. As soon as they entered the yard, they noticed the two of them quarreling fiercely. They froze for a moment, not knowing whether to approach or not.

Lu Guoqiang, terrified, burst into tears and clung to Lu Xingjun’s legs. He had never seen his mother so angry.

Lu Xingjun quickly snapped out of it, picked up his son, and ushered his two daughters into the house. As he passed by, he said, “Stop arguing. What’s the point? Sit down and discuss it calmly.”

Naturally, no one paid attention to him, and the two continued their shouting match.

Lu Qing’an returned, smiling. From a distance, he saw a group of people gathered around his fence. As he got closer and heard the noise, his face darkened instantly.

“Go back, there’s nothing good to hear.” Lu Qing’an waved the others away.

Upon entering the yard, he saw his two daughters-in-law in the midst of a quarrel, almost fighting. Lu Qing’an’s face turned as dark as the bottom of a pot.

“What are you making so much noise for? Do you want to go to the brigade headquarters and borrow two loudspeakers for you? That way, you can make it louder?” Lu Qing’an scolded harshly.

When the two women heard their father-in-law speak, they stopped talking and angrily returned to the house.

Lu Qing’an entered the kitchen and said to Li Yue’e, “Didn’t you hear the two daughters-in-law quarreling? Why don’t you intervene?”

“I heard them. They were so loud, and I’m not deaf. This resentment has been building up for a long time, and it’s not healthy to keep it bottled up. Let them quarrel and get it all out,” Li Yue’e said.

“Don’t you know about Dad’s health? Letting them quarrel like this not only affects Dad, but also makes outsiders laugh at him.”

“I know. I didn’t plan to let them quarrel for too long. If you hadn’t come back, I would’ve gone to talk to them later. Every family has its quarrels, there’s nothing funny about it. Your two sons are at home, but I didn’t see them come out to stop it,” Li Yue’e said lightly.

“Are they both at home?” Lu Qing’an was angry. How could his wife allow such a scene in their home? “There’s really no one…”

It was then that Lu Qing’an noticed Su Mo sitting quietly in the corner, tending to the fire. He immediately stopped talking and said awkwardly, “Oh, the third family is here too.”

Su Mo gave a polite but awkward smile and replied, “Yeah.”

“Mom, your steamed buns are almost ready. I’ll go back first,” Su Mo said, standing up and preparing to leave.

“Okay, you go back,” Li Yue’e waved her hand, understanding that Su Mo would feel uncomfortable staying.

Su Mo took her sweater and left quickly. As she passed the yard, Liu Yuzhi called out to her again.

“Third sister-in-law, your eldest brother is back. Let him help you with the measurements.”

Su Mo had no choice but to go back in and ask Lu Xingjun to help her compare the approximate length and width.

When they came out, Liu Yuzhi awkwardly said, “Third sister-in-law, I made a fool of myself.”

Su Mo waved her hands dismissively, “Sister-in-law, even teeth clash sometimes, let alone humans.”

Liu Yuzhi smiled, “I originally wanted you to stay for dinner, but the food has just been steamed. I’ll have Daya bring some to you later.”

“Sister-in-law, there’s really no need. I have rice warming up in the pot,” Su Mo said before quickly leaving.

Meanwhile, while the sisters-in-law of the Lu family were fighting, Lu Changzheng had returned to the army. As soon as he arrived, he went to the mailroom to ask if there were any letters or phone calls for him.

When he got a negative answer, he felt a little disappointed.

Why hadn’t his wife written to him? Didn’t she miss him?

He realized that since he had been urgently called back to the team, his wife must have been afraid of disturbing him and didn’t dare to write. He decided he’d write to her to let her know he had returned safely.

But then again, a letter would take too long to arrive. He’d send a telegram tomorrow instead.

Oh, he suddenly remembered it was time to send her a new coat for the winter. It was cold in the north, and she must not be used to it. He’d get a smaller size and send it back to her. He’d also check out the military service center for any nutritional supplements and buy some for her.

Qingxi County was still too small and didn’t have anything good.

The next day, Lu Changzheng sent a telegram to Su Mo early in the morning. Then he went to the service center and bought canned meat and milk candy. He saw milk powder and bought two more bags. He was also going to buy a new coat and send it back to her.

Looking at the milk powder in his hands, Lu Changzheng suddenly thought that he had worked so hard for these two days, but he still didn’t know whether his wife was pregnant or not.
