Su Mo rushed out of the room and saw that Uncle Zhong’s car was still parked in the same spot. Her eyes immediately lit up.
“Uncle Zhong, can I trouble you again? Could you help me take my grandma to the hospital? She’s hurt from a fall and needs to go now. There’s no other way to get a car here, so I really have to trouble you.”
The urgency in Su Mo’s eyes and the pleading tone in her voice were clear.
Uncle Zhong didn’t hesitate and nodded in agreement. At the same time, he handed Su Mo a tube of ointment.
“I noticed your foot seems to be bothering you. This ointment works wonders.”
Su Mo’s heart warmed instantly. “Thank you, Uncle Zhong.”
Her smile was bright, as if it could light up the whole night.
Uncle Zhong smiled and nodded, leading her back into the yard.
As soon as he entered, he slipped slightly and nearly fell, muttering softly, “Who spilled water here? This is dangerous.”
Su Mo’s hurried steps paused for a moment as she glanced at the patch of ice near the door, frowning slightly. How could Grandma have spilled water here? People living in the village during the winter should know better than this.
However, with the situation being urgent, she didn’t have time to think too much and quickly followed Uncle Zhong into the house.
Once inside, Uncle Zhong saw the elderly woman lying in bed and immediately picked her up to carry her outside.
Su Mo quickly told Aunt Li what was happening and rushed to follow Uncle Zhong’s footsteps.
Initially, Uncle Zhong planned to take Su Mo and her grandma back to Beijing and find a hospital there. However, after Grandma’s insistence, they went to a hospital in Yan Jiao City.
At the hospital, there was more waiting—registering, taking X-rays—and by the time everything was done, the sky was already beginning to lighten.
“Thank you, Uncle Zhong, and sorry for keeping you up all night. I really feel bad about it.”
“Don’t mention it. Like I said, this is to repay you for saving our young master’s life. Now, go take care of your grandma. If everything’s fine, I’ll leave.”
“Okay, thank you, Uncle Zhong.”
Another round of thanks, and Uncle Zhong smiled before turning to leave.
He thought that if he didn’t accept her thanks, the girl would probably feel bad about it in her heart.
After seeing Uncle Zhong off, Su Mo returned to find that the X-ray results had just come out.
“Where are the family members of Su Ailian?”
“Here.”
The doctor, holding the X-ray, frowned deeply, and Su Mo’s heart sank with it.
“Doctor, how is my grandma’s condition?”
The doctor shook his head. “Not good. In her condition, surgery would be the best option, but she’s too old, and the location of the injury is tricky. If you’re considering surgery, it’s best to go to Beijing, where the medical conditions and post-surgery rehabilitation are much better than here.”
Su Mo opened her mouth, but before she could speak, the elderly Su Ailian, lying in bed, spoke up.
“Don’t treat me, Mo Mo. I’m not going to Beijing. I’ve lived this long. I’ve had enough of life. I don’t want treatment anymore!”
“Grandma, don’t say such silly things!”
“I’m not saying anything silly. I mean it! I really don’t want treatment anymore!”
Su Mo didn’t argue with her but turned to the doctor instead. “Doctor, can you help arrange for her transfer to another hospital?”
“I’ll see what I can do. Transferring to a hospital in Beijing is not easy at the moment. Private hospitals like Ji’an may still be an option, but they tend to be more expensive.”
“It’s fine. As long as it can help my grandma, the cost doesn’t matter.”
“Alright, come with me.”
Su Mo went to complete the transfer paperwork and returned to find Grandma Su Ailian lying in bed, turning her head to the side and ignoring her.
Su Mo smiled and sat beside the elderly woman.
“Are you mad? Grandma, you have to get better, you know. I’m counting on you to see me get married and help me with my children.”
Su Ailian’s heart twisted, and tears started to fall. “Mo Mo, I’ve caused you so much trouble. You’ve already had such a hard time these years, and now I’m still…”
Su Mo patiently wiped away her tears. “Stop saying such silly things. You’re my grandma. Taking care of you is what I should do. If we’re talking about trouble, when the Liu family abandoned me and I was sent to you, should you have just left me to freeze or starve to death on the street?”
“Don’t talk like that! How could I ever do that?”
Su Mo’s eyes grew warm. “Exactly, how could you bear that? And how could I? You raised me, and now I’ll be with you as you grow old. We’re family, no one is a burden to anyone.”
“But… the medical bills…” Su Ailian hesitated. The medical expenses—how could Mo Mo afford them? It was tough enough here, but in Beijing, they would be even harder to bear.
“You don’t have to worry about that, Grandma. I haven’t told you yet, but after dawn, I have an audition.”
“Do you remember? The director, Yuan Hongsheng, who wanted me for a movie a few years ago, is making a new film. He invited me to audition. If I pass, I’ll make a lot of money. So don’t worry about anything. Just focus on getting better.”
“Really?” Su Ailian’s eyes lit up with surprise.
Su Mo nodded, her smile bright.
At dawn, Su Mo’s phone suddenly rang urgently.
Ma Wenlong.
Seeing Ma Wenlong’s name, Su Mo remembered what had happened last night. With a huff, she answered the phone. Before she could speak, Ma Wenlong’s voice came through, filled with crying.
“Su Mo! You bastard! You still know how to pick up the phone? Do you know how worried I was? Boo hoo hoo…”
Su Mo froze for a moment, then realized where Ma Wenlong’s anger was coming from. She immediately felt a bit guilty.
“Sorry, I drank too much and didn’t want to go back to the private room, so I just took a taxi back. I didn’t mean to worry you.”
Ma Wenlong wasn’t upset with her. As long as she was okay, that was all that mattered. Plus, he could tell Su Mo wasn’t happy the night before.
“Boo hoo hoo, as long as you’re fine, that’s all that matters…”
Su Mo sighed. “I have some family matters, but when I get back, I’ll treat you to a meal as an apology.”
“Boo hoo hoo, okay.”
Su Mo rubbed her forehead, about to hang up, when Ma Wenlong suddenly called out to her.
“By the way, you have that audition today. Don’t forget! You’ve been waiting for this for so long.”
Su Mo smiled. “Don’t worry, I won’t forget.”
Five years ago, the director Yuan Hongsheng had found her for a film, and now, after five years, he was making another major project. Su Mo had returned for this very audition. She definitely wouldn’t forget it.
