Chapter 15 Husband, I Will Be Good to You
Shu Qingyao stood there, watching the young man’s tall and straight figure leave.
The silvery moonlight shone on Xie Hezhang’s skin, tanned by the sun to a honeyed hue.
In Shu Qingyao’s eyes, Xie Hezhang was like a wild, untamed, and highly wary little leopard.
He was a bit infuriating sometimes.
But mostly, she was filled with joy.
No matter what he had become, she still loved him, loved him very much.
It wasn’t until Xie Hezhang’s figure gradually disappeared into the moonlight that Shu Qingyao, with a hint of a smile, returned to the dormitory alone.
She went to the well and fetched a basin of cold water. She took a bath and then, wearing a floral nightgown, stood by the window, wiping her hair.
The jade pendant on her chest swayed with her movements, emitting a soft glow in the moonlight.
Shu Qingyao picked up the jade pendant and looked at it in the moonlight.
Did this jade pendant seem a little smoother and brighter than a few days ago?
Shu Qingyao racked her brains, comparing it to how it looked when she first brought it here. But she didn’t have a phone to take pictures, and her eyesight couldn’t really tell the difference.
Putting the jade pendant aside, Shu Qingyao, with her damp long hair, held a pencil in her mouth and sat at the desk by the window, starting to research what to buy when she went to town with Xie Hezhang on Sunday.
She had originally planned to eat the three kilograms of flour she had bought for the cook with Xie Hezhang. That would last them about a week.
But now she also had to feed Xie Xiaoqian.
A half-grown child—even a girl—had a big appetite.
Shu Qingyao could only eat one of those sturdy meat buns, while Xie Xiaoqian could eat two.
And Shu Qingyao didn’t plan to raise Xie Xiaoqian poorly.
Whatever other children had, Xie Xiaoqian should have too.
There weren’t many nutritional supplements available in the 1970s. Shu Qingyao made a list of the snacks she would buy in town the next day: two cans of Ovaltine, a bag of pig fat candy, a packet of sour plum powder, and a tin of Golden Rooster biscuits.
These were all the snacks that Shu Jianguo used to buy for her from the supply and marketing cooperative when she was a child.
Although they were outdated now, it wasn’t easy for children in the countryside to get them back then.
After recording the snacks, Shu Qingyao started on the serious stuff.
Eggs were definitely a must-buy. As the easiest source of protein, children needed them to grow, and Xie Hezhang and Xie Xiaoqian, the two little ones, had to eat one every day.
One kilogram of eggs was about ten eggs. Two a day, going to town once every half a month, they would need about thirty eggs, so she had to buy three kilograms.
Flour could be used not only for steaming buns but also for making noodles. It was durable and could be stored for a long time, so she would buy as much as she could. Xie Hezhang could help her carry it anyway.
Shu Qingyao wrote down twenty kilograms in her notebook.
Then she thought about it and changed it to thirty kilograms.
Then came rice.
The villagers in Helian Village liked to eat noodles, but Shu Qingyao was from the south, and she liked to eat rice. After coming to the countryside, Shu Qingyao hadn’t eaten white rice for a while. Even when the canteen cooked rice, they used brown rice.
Since she was cooking for herself, Shu Qingyao didn’t hold back. With a bold stroke, she wrote down: fifteen kilograms of rice.
Then came pork and beef.
Meat was not easy to store, so Shu Qingyao didn’t plan to buy too much. She remembered that Xie Hezhang didn’t like braised meat either. Shu Qingyao scribbled and crossed out, thought about it, and decided to wait and see. If there were other types of meat, she could buy some back then.
After recording everything she wanted to buy, Shu Qingyao looked at the time. It was…
It wasn’t early, so she closed the book, lay in bed, and closed her eyes.
…
Perhaps because she was thinking about what to eat before bed, Shu Qingyao dreamed of Xie Hezhang cooking for her in his villa.
“Qingyao, Qingyao, wake up, it’s time for dinner.”
Shu Qingyao was vaguely awakened and opened her eyes to see Xie Hezhang’s gentle peach blossom eyes and handsome face.
A mature and elegant man in his thirties, looking at her with affection.
Even knowing it was a dream, she instinctively hugged him, her voice choked with tears, “Husband, I miss you so much…”
Xie Hezhang picked up Shu Qingyao, who was wearing a lace nightgown, and kissed her soft and white face. He chuckled in a low voice, “Good girl. After dinner, go back to bed and think about me…”
Shu Qingyao’s fair cheeks flushed red.
Even though they were an old married couple, she still couldn’t stand this man, who was a year younger than her, being so flirtatious!
He had been so well-behaved when they first got married!
Shu Qingyao pushed him away, “Put me down!”
Xie Hezhang smiled. His strong arms easily lifted the petite woman in his arms and carried her to the dining room.
The maid, Xiaoling, had seen this couple’s sweet and loving scenes countless times. Seeing Shu Qingyao being carried out by Xie Hezhang, she smiled and said, “Madam, you said you wanted to eat stir-fried beef with yellow chives, and Sir specially cooked it for you tonight.”
Shu Qingyao jumped out of his arms and looked at the marble dining table. There were several of Xie Hezhang’s signature dishes on it.
“You cooked again tonight?”
Xie Hezhang put his arm around her waist, “Didn’t you say you wanted to eat beef with yellow chives?”
Shu Qingyao remembered that when they first got married, Xie Hezhang wasn’t very good at cooking.
Later, she had severe morning sickness during her pregnancy and vomited everything she ate. Xie Hezhang stayed home full-time to take care of her and started researching menus for her.
It had to be said that Xie Hezhang was really good at cooking. Shu Qingyao didn’t vomit anymore when she ate his food.
You can’t bite the hand that feeds you. Back then, she was very wary of men, and she couldn’t give him a hard time at home anymore.
Overall, Xie Hezhang was the one who put in the most effort in their relationship.
He appeared at her darkest moment, when she was covered in thorns.
He healed her wounds and accepted all her good and bad qualities.
She didn’t know back then that the man she married had already amassed a fortune of billions of dollars with his first pot of gold from the internet. And this successful man, in order to gain her trust, became a stay-at-home husband.
“Come and try it, see if it suits your taste.”
Xie Hezhang thoughtfully pulled out a chair for her. Seeing his wife’s red eyes, he couldn’t help but laugh, “You’re such a grown woman, why are you crying?”
He was about to reach out and wipe her tears.
Shu Qingyao reached out and hugged the man’s waist tightly, burying her face in his chest.
“Husband, I will be good to you…”
Even though you were so hard to deal with when you were young, sniff sniff.
…
That morning, Shu Qingyao woke up crying from her dream.
She was a mess of tears and snot, her pillow was soaked.
With two red, puffy eyes, she opened her eyes and looked at the dusty dormitory, contrasting with the bright and clean home in her dream, and she felt a sense of disorientation.
Suddenly, a whiff of stir-fried beef with yellow chives wafted through the air.
Shu Qingyao looked up, incredulously at the desk.
Was it happening again?
