As dusk fell and the city lights began to twinkle, Su Mo sat in the car, watching the streaking lights outside the window, fading quickly into the distance. A large billboard advertising a joint health checkup passed by rapidly.
Su Mo’s relaxed expression gradually tightened.
She had been back for over a month now. For the past month, she had been running around with Ma Wenlong just to make ends meet. Although she had been asking around for information about the doctor from back then, there had been no progress at all.
As for the health checkup center where she had been examined, it had long since disappeared without a trace.
She had never thought about giving up on what happened back then, but now, looking for that one person felt like trying to find a needle in a haystack, and she suddenly felt lost.
Suppressing the heaviness in her heart, she shifted her gaze forward, only to spot a program on the car’s TV.
It wasn’t exactly a program, more like a commercial event with an engagement ceremony as the headline, grand and magnificent.
The couple at the center of the ceremony on TV were Lu Ziye and Liu Yiyi.
The image of the two hugging and kissing made Su Mo glance at it for just a moment before looking away.
She wasn’t angry, nor was she sad.
She no longer had any strong feelings toward these two. Right now, all she wanted was to find the doctor from back then, to prove her innocence. Not for any other reason, but simply because she didn’t want to live her whole life under that shadow.
The bus stopped, and Su Mo quickly grabbed her bag and stepped off.
Once she was outside, she instinctively shrunk her neck.
“Wow, it’s cold.”
But despite the cold, this winter was probably the warmest one she had experienced in a long time.
Even if it was freezing, it didn’t compare to the years she had spent alone abroad, when she had to deal with studies and make a living all by herself, feeling lonely and miserable.
She walked through the market after buying groceries, heading home.
The place she lived was an older residential building.
The environment wasn’t great, but for Su Mo, it had one major advantage: the rent was cheap.
Carrying her groceries, she had just turned into the road where her building was located when she heard a whistle.
In the quiet night, it pierced through the air.
She looked up and saw a young man in his twenties, sitting on a black motorcycle.
He wore tight leather pants, his long legs stretched out on the ground. His slightly immature face was grinning, the corner of his lips tilted mischievously. He was holding a cigarette, exuding a rebellious, bad-boy aura from head to toe.
As she walked closer, she noticed that despite his rough vibe, he was surprisingly clean. His skin was fair, his eyes were large, and the corners of his eyes were slightly upturned. When he smiled, there was a hint of defiance, and when he wasn’t smiling, he had a fierce look in his eyes.
“Jiang Fei? What are you doing here?”
Jiang Fei was the local troublemaker. Su Mo had met him when she first moved here.
At that time, she had been surrounded by a group of small-time thugs, and though she had some skills, facing a group of people who made a living by fighting was still tough for her.
It was Jiang Fei who had helped her out of that situation.
Since then, Su Mo and Jiang Fei had gradually become familiar with each other.
When Su Mo walked closer, Jiang Fei put out his cigarette against the wall behind him, swung his long leg over the bike, and stepped off. He placed his hands in his pockets and stood in front of her.
“Why didn’t you come home yesterday?”
Su Mo glanced at him. “You came looking for me yesterday?”
Jiang Fei chuckled and looked at her. “What do you think? How would I know you didn’t come home if I didn’t come looking for you?” Though he was laughing, his words had an undertone of reprimand and inquiry.
Su Mo frowned and didn’t speak. For some reason, she wasn’t used to Jiang Fei’s attitude at the moment.
After they became familiar, Jiang Fei would often drop by to find her.
To Su Mo, a young man in his twenties was just a kid, but today, for some reason, despite the smile on his face, he exuded a sense of aggression that made him seem very different from his usual self.
Seeing her silent, Jiang Fei chuckled to himself. “Alright, I guess you think I’m making a big deal out of it. My mom made dumplings yesterday, and I brought you some, but you weren’t home.”
He then handed a lunchbox to Su Mo.
“Here, I had my mom make some more today. They smell pretty good.”
Su Mo smiled faintly and took the lunchbox. “Thank your mom for me. Yesterday, my grandma had surgery, so I stayed at the hospital with her all night.”
“Your grandma had surgery?” Jiang Fei’s brow furrowed. “What happened? Is it serious? Which hospital? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Su Mo shook her head and walked toward the hallway. “It’s nothing serious. She’s old, and her legs aren’t very stable. She slipped on the ice, but the surgery went well. Don’t worry about it.”
As she spoke, Su Mo opened the door, entered her room, and put the bag and the lunchbox down before heading to the kitchen with the groceries.
Jiang Fei wandered around her room before finally sitting down on the sofa.
“Did you eat yet?” Su Mo asked from the kitchen.
“I already ate. Are you going to the hospital again later?” Jiang Fei asked.
“Yeah. A neighbor from back home is taking care of my grandma at the hospital, and I’m going to bring them some food. Since you’ve eaten, I’ll leave you to relax here,” Su Mo replied, and didn’t pay him any more attention.
Su Mo was quick at cooking, and soon three dishes and a soup were ready.
She hadn’t heard any sounds from Jiang Fei, and thought he had gotten bored and left, but to her surprise, when she brought the food out, Jiang Fei was still in her room.
At that moment, he was staring at a suit that was lying on her sofa, his brow furrowed deeply as if he could crush a fly with it.
That suit was the one she had taken from the hotel the night she had gotten drunk. She still hadn’t found the owner.
“Whose clothes are these? You’ve been seeing someone outside?” Jiang Fei’s expression darkened, his youthful face now hard with a cold, unfitting expression for his age.
Su Mo didn’t answer but instead placed the food on the table. Then she quickly stepped forward to collect the suit and hang it in the closet.
Jiang Fei stepped forward, grabbing her arm, his face full of anger. “I’m asking you whose clothes these are! Su Mo, when did you get so close to a man that his clothes are left here? You brought him home?”
“Jiang Fei, this is my personal business,” Su Mo’s lips pressed tightly together, her brows slightly furrowed. Despite being a delicate-looking girl, at that moment, she seemed as if she were covered in thorns, making anyone feel they couldn’t approach.
Su Mo was very stubborn, and Jiang Fei had already noticed this during the past month.
She seemed easy-going, but when it came to certain things, she would never back down.
Just like now.
Jiang Fei’s eyes darkened as he stared at her, his lips tightly pressed.

Lu Qingze (wiping the knife): Hmm, let the kid stay out of adult matters in the future, understood?
Jiuhui: Understood…

Jiuhui: You wouldn’t understand. After all, life is more important!
