“Jiang Fei, this is my personal matter.”
Jiang Fei looked at her, his gaze heavy, his lips tightly pressed together.
Su Mo broke free from Jiang Fei’s grasp on her arm, neatly folded the suit, then washed her hands in the kitchen. Afterward, she quietly began packing the food she had prepared into the thermal container.
Jiang Fei stood at the kitchen door, staring at her without blinking. The anger in his eyes slowly grew, filling his entire gaze.
Su Mo furrowed her brows, then turned to look at Jiang Fei with a hint of helplessness in her eyes.
“Jiang Fei, we’re friends, but because we’re friends, I hope you can give me some space. Please don’t ask about my personal matters, okay?”
“What do you mean, your personal matters? Su Mo, do you have any conscience at all?” Jiang Fei said each word through gritted teeth.
Su Mo looked at him but didn’t say anything. After a moment, she lowered her head and continued filling the thermal container with food, her attitude stiffly rejecting any further conversation.
Seeing her this way, Jiang Fei felt the fire inside him flare up, but what could he do? He knew her personality well enough, but what was he supposed to do? Was he really going to argue with her?
In the end, he sighed helplessly.
He stepped forward, washed his hands, and helped Su Mo pack the food into the thermal container.
“I’m not trying to meddle in your personal business, but you don’t know how dangerous this world can be. I just don’t want you to get hurt out there.”
Su Mo lifted her head and looked at him. “Jiang Fei, I’m three years older than you. I’m already twenty-three, and after the New Year, I’ll be twenty-four. I’ve been living abroad alone for five years.”
“So what? Su Mo, the dark side of this world is much worse than you think.”
Su Mo: “…”
Such a kid, she muttered to herself, but she didn’t say anything else. She hurriedly packed the food and put on her coat, getting ready to head to the hospital.
“I’m going to the hospital. If you want to stay here, feel free. If you’re leaving, just lock the door behind you.”
As Su Mo spoke, she had already left the room.
“And you?” Jiang Fei shouted toward her back, “Are you still going to eat the dumplings?”
Su Mo called back from downstairs, “I’ll eat when I come back.”
“How are you getting there?” Jiang Fei quickly locked the door and followed her.
“Bus.”
“I’ll take you.”
“No need. It’s too cold, and it’s not convenient to take a motorcycle.”
“Why are you so delicate! Put this on!” Jiang Fei said, taking a helmet and putting it on Su Mo’s head.
He then pushed her toward the motorcycle and, with one long leg, swung himself onto it. “Come on, you should be grateful I’m your free driver. It’s rush hour now, and if you really take the bus, your grandmother might already be having breakfast by the time you get there!”
Su Mo: “…”
She smiled, sitting on the back seat and loosely wrapping her arms around his waist.
Even though she wore the helmet, Su Mo could still hear the whooshing of the wind past her ears.
But unexpectedly, it wasn’t that cold, since most of the wind was blocked by the not-so-broad shoulders of the young man in front of her.
As they neared the hospital, Jiang Fei slowed the motorcycle down. Su Mo patted his shoulder. “You can go back after this. I’ll stay with my grandmother for a bit.”
Jiang Fei didn’t answer. He slowly stopped the motorcycle in front of the hospital.
Su Mo jumped off the bike, took off the helmet, and repeated what she had said earlier.
Jiang Fei also removed his helmet. “Since we’re here, let’s go inside and check. I’ll go buy some fruit.”
After he said that, he jumped off the motorcycle and walked toward a nearby fruit stall. Su Mo wanted to call him, but she noticed from a distance that Lu Qingze had just gotten out of a car and was looking at her.
Or rather, looking at her and Jiang Fei.
She froze for a moment, and when she came to her senses, she saw Lu Qingze nodding at her before walking into the hospital.
“Su Mo, what kind of fruit does your grandmother like? Come help me pick.”
“Uh, okay.” Su Mo quickly shook off her thoughts about Lu Qingze and turned toward the fruit stall.
She didn’t notice that after she walked toward the stall, Lu Qingze, who had already entered the hospital, stopped and looked back toward the fruit stall.
Su Mo was holding an orange.
Jiang Fei frowned slightly when he saw the orange in her hand. “I told you to pick the fruit your grandmother likes, not the ones you like. If you want some, I’ll buy it for you after we’re done with your grandmother.”
“What do you know? My grandmother likes sweet oranges too.”
“Then buy a few more. You’re probably done with your own, right?”
“Yeah, I’m done, but there’s no need to buy too much. I’ll probably end up eating the ones I bought for my grandmother.”
Their conversation was carried to Lu Qingze by the sound of the sliding door. He stood at the door for a few seconds before turning and walking toward the inpatient department, so he didn’t hear the rest of Su Mo and Jiang Fei’s conversation.
“Why buy another one?”
“Uh, someone helped me a lot when my grandmother was in the hospital. His dad’s in the hospital now too, so I should buy something for him.”
“Oh, is it a man?”
“Yeah.”
Jiang Fei’s footsteps paused, and the hand holding the fruit tightened.
When Su Mo and Jiang Fei arrived at the hospital room, only Su Ailian was lying in bed.
“Grandma, where’s Aunt Li?”
Su Mo placed the thermal container on the table and glanced toward the bathroom.
“Aunt Li went to dry the clothes. This hospital is really good, it even has a dedicated laundry room. She washed my clothes from yesterday and sent them…”
Before she could finish, she saw Jiang Fei following behind Su Mo.
“Mo Mo, this is…”
Su Mo quickly pulled Jiang Fei forward. “Grandma, this is Jiang Fei, the one I mentioned before. He’s helped me a lot since I came back.”
“Oh, so it’s Jiang Fei. Come, come, sit down. Mo Mo often talks about you, saying you and your mom take good care of her.”
Su Ailian pointed to the sofa not far away, but Jiang Fei didn’t sit there. Instead, he sat by Su Ailian’s bed.
“Grandma, don’t stand on ceremony with me. My mom takes care of her because she likes her. I heard from Su Mo that you like oranges, so I bought a few.”
“Eh, good, just put them there. You’re such a polite kid, have you eaten yet?”
Jiang Fei glanced at Su Mo. He had eaten already, but Su Mo hadn’t. However, after seeing her expression, he directly said,
“I’ve eaten.”
“Good.” Su Ailian wanted to chat with Jiang Fei, but Su Mo had already brought out the food. “Let’s eat first, Grandma.”
Seeing this, Jiang Fei stood up. “I’m going outside for a smoke.”
At first, Su Ailian quietly ate her meal, but when she felt Jiang Fei had walked far enough, she grasped Su Mo’s hand.
“Mo Mo, does Jiang Fei like you?”
Su Mo froze for a moment as she held the spoon. “Grandma, don’t overthink it. Jiang Fei is still young. In my eyes, he’s just a kid.”
“He’s not a kid anymore! Mo Mo, it’s hard to meet the right person, don’t let him slip by. If you miss this chance, it might be hard to find someone else.”
After a long pause, Su Mo finally spoke again. “Grandma, I’m not thinking about relationships right now.”
At this time, Jiang Fei, who had been waiting at the door, pulled his hand from the doorknob and took out a cigarette from his pocket, walking toward the smoking area.
