Li Yue thought to herself, What unfortunate timing. She welcomed the woman into the office, courteously pouring her a cup of tea.
“Hello, Miss. How may I address you? Our boss isn’t here right now. If it’s work-related, you can talk to me.”
Yuan Weiwei, who had cried all night, couldn’t hold her composure anymore. Tears welled up in her reddened eyes, but her tone carried a mix of arrogance and questioning.
“Then when will she be here?”
The day she received the recording from Mu Wan, it felt as though her entire world had collapsed. How could her beloved Brother Shuyu say something so venomous? He had called her stupid and admitted to only using her. Her first reaction was disbelief, thinking the recording had been fabricated. She wanted to call Mu Wan directly to confirm, but the seed of doubt had already been planted in her heart.
Mu Wan had no reason to fake such a recording, and if it was false, Kuang Shuyu would deny it immediately when questioned. Logically, she should have asked him, the other party involved.
But inexplicably, Yuan Weiwei didn’t do it. Though spoiled and impulsive, she wasn’t completely oblivious to how someone truly felt about her. A woman can sense if a man genuinely loves her or not.
Kuang Shuyu only ever took the initiative to meet her when he needed something. He never brought her along to gatherings with his friends. Even if she insisted on attending, those friends would tease her about “chasing him,” and Kuang Shuyu would merely scold them lightly, leaving her embarrassed and stranded.
Did he really propose marriage because he liked her?
Doubt began to overwhelm her. She decided to test him. Yuan Weiwei asked her father to halt their family’s business project with the Kuang family. When Kuang Shuyu came to ask her about it, she feigned reluctance. To her shock, he got angry. It wasn’t rage, but in that moment, the look in his eyes turned from eagerness to cold indifference. It only lasted a second, just like the time she had spotted him in a mall from afar.
But this time, she was sure she hadn’t misread it.
Her world collapsed at that realization. Her fiancé, just as the recording said, didn’t love her. He only cared about her status as the Yuan family’s heiress—not her as a person.
After understanding the truth, Yuan Weiwei spent the entire night crying at home, not daring to let her parents find out. Kuang Shuyu didn’t know that when their engagement was arranged, she had fought tooth and nail for it. Initially, Yuan’s father had objected—not because of Kuang Shuyu’s status, but because he thought Shuyu lacked integrity. Back then, Yuan Weiwei had been so focused on defending Kuang Shuyu that she dismissed it as prejudice.
Now, looking back, she realized her father had been right.
The more she thought about it, the more heartbroken she felt. Tears streamed down her face like broken pearls. Not wanting Li Yue to see her so vulnerable, she covered her face with her hands and sobbed loudly.
Li Yue didn’t know who Yuan Weiwei was, but seeing a young woman cry so bitterly softened her heart. After handing her some tissues, Li Yue left the room briefly and returned with a cup of bubble tea.
“Little sister, I don’t know why you’re crying so hard, but you’re still young. There’s no hurdle in life you can’t get past. Look at me—I was in a pretty miserable spot before, but now I’m doing just fine.”
She smiled and handed the drink over.
“This is a milk tea my coworkers ordered, bought with the ‘hush money’ from my boss’s boyfriend. It’s mango pomelo sago, extra sugar—super sweet. Have a couple of sips, and it’ll wash away the bitterness in your heart.”
Yuan Weiwei looked up at Li Yue, puzzled.
“Boss’s boyfriend?”
Li Yue nodded, her tone dripping with sarcasm, though a hint of envy flashed in her eyes.
“Yeah, those two lovebirds show off their relationship every single day and torment us single folks. Kuang Ye drives Wan wan to work every morning, then comes back to pick her up right on time after work, no matter the weather. The two companies are close by, so whenever the cafeteria has something Wan wan likes, Kuang Ye packs it up in a thermal container and brings it to her. I even heard Kuang Ye makes Buddha Jumps Over the Wall soup for her at home.”
She sighed dramatically.
“Esports players sound so wild and untamed, right? Who knew someone like that could spoil his girlfriend this much? And it’s not even just materialistic pampering, like buying bags or necklaces. For someone like Mu Wan, who has such a privileged background, ‘love equals money’ doesn’t really apply. What’s truly precious is Kuang Ye’s willingness to personally do things for her when he could easily solve it with money. That kind of care and patience is rare.”
Yuan Weiwei: “…”
She suddenly burst into louder sobs.
“Brother Shuyu has never treated me like that!”
Even that day at the mall after eating Japanese food, although he drove there himself, he claimed he didn’t have time and sent a driver to pick her up instead.
Li Yue hadn’t expected her casual comment to hit such a sore spot. Feeling awkward, she hurriedly stuck the straw of the milk tea to Yuan Weiwei’s lips.
“Drink something sweet, drink something sweet! Scumbags aren’t worth crying over.”
Yuan Weiwei took a vengeful sip, then immediately turned to the nearby trash can and spat it out.
“What kind of milk tea is this? It doesn’t taste like milk at all, the pomelo is so bitter, and it’s loaded with so much syrup that it’s disgustingly sweet!”
Li Yue: “…”
It’s free—can you not be so picky?
Yuan Weiwei pulled out her phone and ordered milk tea from her usual place. Her voice was still hoarse as she turned to Li Yue.
“I’m ordering something drinkable. Do you want one?”
Li Yue paused, then shook her head.
“No, I’m good…”
Wait, are you not planning on leaving? You’re settling in and ordering milk tea now?
Not long after, Yuan Weiwei’s milk tea arrived. Unlike the usual delivery methods, this one came via a chauffeur in a suit driving a luxury car, which left Jian Jia’s employees gawking in surprise. Yuan Weiwei, however, seemed unfazed, as if it were a normal occurrence.
Finally sipping a drink she liked, Yuan Weiwei wiped her tear-streaked face with a tissue and asked Li Yue,
“You mentioned earlier that you got through a rough time yourself. How bad was it? Worse than having a fiancé who doesn’t love you?”
Li Yue: “…”
Little sister, you really don’t know how to talk to people, huh?
