Xia Yunxuan thought to herself, “I won’t admit to anything without evidence.”

The team leader said, “I was just asking, it’s okay if it wasn’t you. You watch the farm tools, I’ll go work.”

“Okay, Captain.”

After everyone went to work, Xia Yunxuan took her shoulder bag and went to town. On the way, she met Zhang, the old man who drove the ox cart. “Little girl, where are you going? Get on the cart.”

Xia Yunxuan took a look and saw that the ox cart was full of educated youths. “Hello, Zhang, I’m going to town for something, can you give me a ride?”

The cart was so crowded that there wasn’t much room to sit.  Xiao Yicheng said, “Come sit next to me, there’s space here.”

Xia Yunxuan said, “Thank you.”

Xia Yunxuan noticed the new educated youth and realized he was very handsome. This was natural beauty, unlike the people in the future who had their faces done.

As Xia Yunxuan sat next to Xiao Yicheng, the wind blew, and Xiao Yicheng smelled a faint fragrance from the little girl, it was very pleasant.

Feng Shuwen was furious when she saw this. She had tried to impress Xiao Yicheng, but he didn’t even look at her. Now he was being attentive to a little girl from the village.

Although she spoke softly, everyone on the cart heard her.  Since she didn’t mention anyone’s name, no one responded. Feng Shuwen thought Xia Yunxuan was afraid of her and continued to talk.

Old Zhang said, “If you want to ride, just sit there quietly. If you don’t want to, get off. Your mouth has been like a sewer since you got on. I’m tired of listening to you. You think you’re better because you’re from the city? You’re still here in the countryside!”

“Don’t you know? He doesn’t want to talk to you. You think he’s afraid of you? Where did you come from? You have no manners.”

Feng Shuwen said, “You, you old man, you’re not talking about you, why are you answering? Just drive your cart. You think you’re so great with your broken ox cart? Do you know who my father is?”

“Humph, you girl, are you crazy? My ox cart is nothing special. If you’re so capable, walk back yourself. You don’t want to ride. You think you’re so great, why don’t you buy your own bicycle? You look down on us rural people? If we don’t farm, you city people will eat air.”

Someone burst out laughing. It was Gu Beihai. He couldn’t believe that the old man in the countryside could talk like that.

Xiao Yicheng gave Gu Beihai a warning look. Gu Beihai stopped and said to Zhang, the old man driving the cart, “Excuse me, it’s just that you’re too funny. Your summary is perfect.”

“Some people are like that. They always mention their father’s name, but they don’t know if their father is tired at home. They’re still acting like little missy in the countryside. If you’re so capable, why don’t you stay in the city?”

Gu Beihai really couldn’t stand people who looked down on others. She was ugly, yet she was interested in his eldest brother. She didn’t even look at herself to see if she was worthy. She even looked down on rural people. No matter how he looked at it, Xia Yunxuan was prettier than her.

Xia Yunxuan was about to respond to this white lotus. At first, she didn’t mention names, so she endured it. But the woman wouldn’t stop, her mouth wouldn’t shut. She wanted to retort, but Zhang the old man beat her to it. But she gave him a thumbs up. He said it perfectly.

Feng Shuwen said, “You, you, you’re bullying me! Are you even men? You’re all ganging up on me.”

Feng Shuwen started crying. Zhang the old man said, “We’re bullying you just because we said something? Then you shouldn’t talk to us anymore. You city girls look down on us rural people.”

The other educated youths heard Zhang’s words. They quickly said, “That’s just Feng Shuwen’s opinion, it doesn’t represent all of us. You can’t judge everyone by one person.”

“We’ve come to the Xiangshuwan Brigade in the countryside, we’re all part of the same team now. There’s no such thing as looking down on anyone. We’re all working together.”

Feng Shuwen said angrily, “You’re all just brown-nosers. You even flatter a rural person. You’re getting worse and worse. You don’t even mind that poor smell. You’re really turning into real country bumpkins.”

Zhang the old man said, “Fine, we’re country bumpkins. If you’re so capable, walk back yourself. I’m not driving you. Or buy your own bicycle. You think you’re so great? You look down on us rural people? If we don’t farm, you city people will eat air.”

The other educated youths were speechless. Was Feng Shuwen’s brain damaged? She had offended everyone in the countryside as soon as she arrived. How would she survive in this village?

They decided to stay away from her. Otherwise, they would suffer too. They didn’t know how her family raised her. She had such poor manners, they dared to let her out.

The ox cart soon arrived in town. After everyone got off, Xia Yunxuan slowly got off the cart. She took out a dime and gave it to Zhang the old man. Zhang said, “Little girl, we’ll be back at three o’clock. Watch your time.”

“Okay, Zhang.” After everyone had walked far away, Xiao Yicheng was still looking at her. Gu Beihai was a little curious. Why was his eldest brother looking at this little girl?

Xiao Yicheng gave Gu Beihai a warning look and said nothing. He went to find someone to carry bricks.

Xia Yunxuan walked around town, looking for a suitable job. This would give her an excuse to use her money openly.

Otherwise, she had just split from her family and only had one set of clothes. Now she could buy a bicycle and eat meat every day, and she had so much money. People would be suspicious.

She went to the supply and marketing cooperative to browse. Now that she had money, she could buy some things she needed and use them openly.

To be honest, the clothes here were really ugly and rustic. But for the people here, they were good clothes. If you didn’t have money or coupons, you couldn’t buy them. Everyone would mend and patch their clothes until they couldn’t wear them anymore, then they would make a new set.
