At the time, he had just completed a mission and was withdrawing when he received a call from Mu Yecheng, asking for help to intercept the robbers’ van. Since he was nearby, he thought it was just a minor case, a task he could easily handle alone. However, when he heard the figure—three hundred million—he admitted he was tempted.
At the time, the Kuang family business was declining, while the Mu family’s business was flourishing. He and Mu Yecheng were of similar backgrounds, ages, and abilities. But now, the other was a commander, while he was just a major general. He had already fallen behind in rank. Would he also have to lose in terms of family standing? No. He didn’t want to lose.
These thoughts flashed through his mind in mere seconds. When he snapped back to reality, he found himself grabbing one of the robbers’ hands, pulling the trigger for him, and staging the scene as if it were an internal conflict that resulted in accidental deaths.
But before they could dig out the stolen money, the shocking March 18 Incident occurred. Almost all military personnel were dispatched to carry out cleanup missions, including him. However, during contact with a gang leader, he accidentally learned the truth behind the March 18 Incident: it was all because of the three hundred million yuan in stolen money.
Caught off guard, he was shot in the leg. He knew the March 18 Incident was under intense public scrutiny. If it were linked to the Shen Zhou Bank heist, the heist would be thrust back into the spotlight. If that happened, the stolen money might be found, and all his efforts would have been in vain. So he took the opportunity to step back from frontline duties, volunteered to handle the aftermath of the March 18 Incident, and deleted all relevant information from the archives. After that, he retired, returned to the Kuang family, and took over the family business.
But now, what was with this Zhao Yao? Could Zhao Binhai, one of the robbers, really have left behind a son who survived? And if he did, could this son know the whereabouts of the stolen money? If the police caught him, they might uncover the connection between the March 18 Incident and the Shen Zhou Bank heist. Would they then dig deeper and find evidence of his tampering with the archives? Could they even discover that the money had ended up in his hands?
“Sir!”
The butler’s voice suddenly pulled Kuang Hongxuan out of his recollections as the man placed a cup of freshly brewed tea by his side. Kuang Hongxuan, hands trembling, reached for the cup but ultimately set it down with a heavy thud. He looked sharply at the butler.
“I remember your nephew works as a manager at an airline, correct?”
The butler nodded.
“Get me a few unregistered plane tickets.”
Then, he picked up his phone and made a call to one of his old subordinates.
—
Five hours later, Kuang Hongxuan was sitting in a solemn interrogation room, accompanied by his loyal butler—who now wore handcuffs.
Kuang Hongxuan: “…”
Mu Jianhua stared at the elder he had once respected so deeply, his teeth clenched in fury.
“Uncle Kuang, embezzling three hundred million yuan and framing my father indirectly—your heart is truly venomous.”
As soon as Kuang Hongxuan had made the first phone call, Mu Jianhua had received a tip-off. After all, Kuang Hongxuan had been retired for years, and his influence within the system couldn’t compare to that of the flourishing Mu Jianhua. Moreover, Kuang’s old subordinates were around his age, making it impossible for him to personally meddle with surveillance. The information had been passed through several hands, and each layer had been scrutinized by Mu Jianhua, ensuring nothing was missed.
Kuang Hongxuan’s heart pounded wildly, but he maintained an outward calm. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Mu Jianhua sneered coldly, his gaze sharp.
“You don’t know? You don’t know about contacting XX Airlines and having their personnel assist Zhao Yao in boarding through a manual process?”
“You don’t know about planting unregistered tickets near Liu Ying and Zhao Xiaoyuan’s graves?”
“The official announcement only stated that Zhao Yao is Zhao Binhai’s son. It didn’t mention any connection between Zhao Yao and the March 18 Incident.”
“The reason you acted was that you knew Zhao Yao was connected to the March 15 Incident. You assumed that with no way out, he might visit his mother’s and sister’s graves one last time.”
At this moment, Kuang Hongxuan realized the afternoon news had been a trap set for him. But so what? He raised his head coldly.
“Even so, do you have concrete evidence that I took the stolen money? Do you have witnesses? Physical evidence?”
At worst, they could charge him with harboring a criminal. At his age, he could just pay a fine and walk away.
At that moment, Kuang Zhongbai and Zhou Yun hurried into the room, having received news of the situation. Seeing the elder being interrogated, Kuang Zhongbai immediately erupted in anger.
“Mu Jianhua, are you out of your mind? The old man is elderly and infirm. If something happens to him in your police station, will you take responsibility?”
Zhou Yun also turned to Wang Lan, trying to mediate. “Ah Lan, can’t we discuss this calmly—”
But Wang Lan pushed her aside, venting her long-suppressed fury.
“Discuss calmly? I have nothing to discuss with the Kuang family.”
“The sins your family has committed have been borne by mine. My father, despite valuing camaraderie, reminded us on his deathbed to take care of your family.”
“He adored Wan wan. If he knew what she had suffered—”
Tears rolled down her face as she glared viciously at Kuang Hongxuan.
“You’re a plague upon this world. My father, if he were alive, would have torn your heart out himself.”
Zhou Yun, shaken by Wang Lan’s uncharacteristic outburst, turned nervously to the officers. “There must be some mistake. Our elder could never do such a thing.”
Mu Jianhua had no interest in pointless arguments and directly instructed an audit of the Kuang Corporation’s accounts.
Kuang Hongxuan smiled faintly. Corporate accounting records were usually kept for a maximum of fifteen years. Two such cycles had passed since then, and the three hundred million had long since been integrated into the company’s assets. No audit would ever uncover it.
Mu Yanci’s gaze turned icy as he observed Kuang Hongxuan’s smirk.
Suddenly, he leaned closer to the elder, his expression revealing a sharp ruthlessness rarely seen by his family.
“Kuang Hongxuan, do you think the three hundred million has been laundered clean and the law can’t touch you?”
“Don’t celebrate too soon. If the law can’t bring justice for my sister, that doesn’t mean I can’t seek vengeance for her.”
His words caused Kuang Hongxuan’s pupils to dilate with shock.
“What do you plan to do?”
