Chapter 27: No Hidden Illness, No Need for Treatment
Qin Zhaoli: [You never know. Guys like him, who seem cool and composed on the surface, might be wilder than anyone when they let loose.]
Wen Zhixian replied confidently: [Impossible. Mr. Qi is the epitome of calmness and self-control.]
Qin Zhaoli was puzzled: [Do you think he has some kind of hidden illness?]
I mean, that’s Wen Zhixian—soft, sweet, and lovely. Sharing a bed with her and having no other thoughts? Could it really be some hidden issue?
Wen Zhixian genuinely didn’t know, but she wouldn’t suspect someone without evidence.
Qin Zhaoli, realizing his comments might be inappropriate, added: [Maybe Qi Yanjing is just naturally composed. But even if he does have something, it’s fine. Modern medicine is so advanced, and there are plenty of men’s clinics around. It’s not a big deal.]
Wen Zhixian chuckled: [Actually, even if he did and it couldn’t be treated, it wouldn’t matter. What matters to me is the life we share and the spiritual connection we have.]
Just after she sent that message, Qi Yanjing opened the door and walked in. She jumped, startled as though she’d been caught doing something wrong, and dropped her phone on herself.
She immediately sat upright and greeted him, “Done with work?”
“All done.” Qi Yanjing got into bed, glanced at the phone that had fallen onto the sheets, then at her clavicle, which had turned red from the phone hitting it, and reminded her, “Be careful.”
Wen Zhixian nodded repeatedly and gestured toward the cup of tea on the nightstand. “I made some tea for you—it might be a bit cold now.”
Seeing him pick up the cup, she quickly turned off her phone screen.
“Thank you,” he said, putting the glass down after finishing the tea.
She checked the time—it was past ten. Time to sleep.
Just as the lights went out, Qi Yanjing said quietly, “I don’t have any hidden illnesses.”
Wen Zhixian froze, lying stiffly in bed. Her face flushed red.
It felt like the mortifying experience of badmouthing someone behind their back and having them overhear it.
“And I don’t need treatment,” he added.
Wen Zhixian’s face burned. “Okay, okay, got it.”
Note to self: never start random conversations again!
Qi Yanjing let out a soft “Mm,” then said, “Go to sleep.”
After saying that, he turned and wrapped his arms around Zhixian.
As he drifted off, he found himself pondering whether his improved sleep was due to the tea or simply being near Zhixian. The thought stayed with him until his consciousness faded.
Since sharing a bed with her for a few nights, apart from having one nightmare, his sleep had been much better overall.
—
After finishing a massive 500-cup order at the shop, Wen Zhixian finally took a break. As she waited for someone to pick up the order, she prepared to head home.
Just as she sat down, she spotted a familiar figure stepping out of a car.
Qi Yanjing walked through the door, his hands full of what appeared to be desserts, chocolates, and candies.
She approached him, pleasantly surprised. “What are you doing here?”
Qi Yanjing thought to himself that if he didn’t show up as Wen Zhixian’s husband, Gu Yuchen would continue being mistaken as her spouse by the shop staff. He couldn’t let a tasteless ex steal his rightful title.
The staff looked over, stunned to see an exceptionally handsome 188 cm man.
Wen Zhixian waved at Yue Qi. “Come help with this.”
Not just Yue Qi—several others came over too.
Qi Yanjing said calmly, “It’s my first time here, so I brought some afternoon tea. Hope you like it.”
It was for them! Yue Qi coughed lightly. “Boss, who’s this?”
Qi Yanjing took the initiative to brush his hand against Wen Zhixian’s, prompting her to smile and introduce him, “This is my husband. Didn’t I mention to everyone before that I got married?”
Yue Qi immediately greeted him, “Hello, brother-in-law.”
Qi Yanjing curved his lips into a slight smile. “Hello.”
Lili was visibly excited. No wonder the boss said last time they’d get an eyeful—now they truly could.
After introducing Qi Yanjing to everyone and distributing the afternoon tea, the two of them sat down at a table by the window.
Wen Zhixian smiled at him and asked, “What made you decide to come over this afternoon?”
“I finished my report and didn’t have any classes, so I thought I’d stop by,” he replied, with a touch of humor in his tone. “Didn’t you mention yesterday that Gu Yuchen came by? If I don’t show up, will they start calling someone else brother-in-law?”
Wen Zhixian hadn’t expected this to be the reason. The corners of her lips lifted in amusement. “How could that happen? I already told them not to randomly call anyone brother-in-law, or the real one might get upset.”
The shop staff were all younger than her, with some still in college working part-time. While they usually called her “Boss,” when it came to her husband, they affectionately referred to him as “brother-in-law.”
Qi Yanjing hadn’t expected her to clarify this for him, but he was pleased nonetheless. He added, “By the way, I spoke to my parents this morning. They’re free tonight, so both families can have dinner together.”
Wen Zhixian looked puzzled. “How did you ask them?”
“The school isn’t far from their place, so I dropped by this morning and got their contact information,” he explained. Despite how quickly their marriage had come about, his in-laws clearly liked him after their recent interactions.
He suspected this might be due to a favorable comparison with her ex.
Wen Zhixian was momentarily surprised. “You made a special trip this morning? My parents must have been thrilled.”
Qi Yanjing didn’t deny it.
“You’re so thoughtful; of course my parents like you.” Resting her chin on her hand, she hesitated before bringing up Gu Yuchen but ultimately decided against it.
Qi Yanjing noticed her hesitation and encouraged her, “If you want to say something, just say it. Wasn’t that the premise of our marriage?”
Their relationship had started as a mutual confidant arrangement without any emotional foundation. He didn’t want any barriers between them.
Encouraged, she spoke. “Our family has known the Gu family since I was young. Even when I was with Gu Yuchen, he’d visit my family as casually as before and wasn’t particularly attentive to my parents—or to me, for that matter. But now, with you being so sincere, it’s natural for my parents to favor you.”
Qi Yanjing joked, “Well, I should thank him for making things easier for me.”
Wen Zhixian’s eyes sparkled with laughter. She glanced toward the door and gestured with her chin. “That’s the assistant for the 3,000-cup coffee order.”
She got up and said to Qi Yanjing, “Wait a moment. I’ll go handle this.”
Qi Yanjing turned his gaze toward the door, his expression thoughtful.
Wen Zhixian helped move one of the boxes, but Qi Yanjing walked over and said, “I’ll do it.”
The assistant froze for a moment at the sound of his voice. When Qi Yanjing approached, the assistant visibly stiffened.
Taking the box from Wen Zhixian’s hands, Qi Yanjing said softly, “I’ve got it.”
“You’re such a considerate brother-in-law,” Yue Qi exclaimed. Having enjoyed the treats Qi Yanjing brought, Yue Qi’s loyalty had already shifted from Gu Yuchen to him. Naturally, she wanted to sing his praises—Gu Yuchen had never helped their boss like this.
Qi Yanjing was visibly pleased by the compliment.
However, the assistant took the box directly from Qi Yanjing’s hands, his tone softening. “This is the last one. I’ll carry it so I can leave right after.”
