Early the next morning, Gu Xicao took Lin Yuan to start work.
The siblings didn’t splurge on breakfast outside. Instead, they steamed two sweet potatoes at home and ate them before heading out.
As soon as Wang Laoshi saw them arrive, he ran over with a newspaper in hand. “Xiao Gu, look at this!”
Gu Xicao glanced at the paper, which was today’s Hong Kong Daily News. The front-page headline reported that the Mong Kok Police Station had captured the robber responsible for the 3-million-yuan gold heist.
The photo showed Lin Jianyi, looking righteous, holding the downtrodden robber. The accompanying article detailed how the robber had kidnapped a trash collector, taken his place, and hid within the police station under the guise of being an employee.
“I’ve seen it. What about it?”
Gu Xicao unfolded her table and set up the chairs.
Wang Laoshi stared at her with wide eyes. “Was this case really something you predicted?”
Gu Xicao replied nonchalantly, “It wasn’t me…”
“I knew it! How could you possibly—” Wang Laoshi heaved a sigh of relief.
Before he could finish, Gu Xicao added mischievously, “Could it have been you?”
Wang Laoshi let out an involuntary yelp and almost bit his tongue. His eyes widened in disbelief as he looked at her. “It… really was you?!”
“If you don’t believe it, forget it. Alright, Wang Laoshi, step aside. We’re starting work.”
Gu Xicao set up her banner and handed Lin Yuan his notebook and pen to copy Quiet Night Thoughts from the previous day.
Wang Laoshi had no choice but to return to his spot, but the way he looked at her was filled with shock and disbelief.
As an insider in the industry, Wang Laoshi had never heard of anyone being this accurate. Even the famous Master Bai of Temple Street was, in his opinion, just a smooth talker who knew how to read people.
If fortune-telling were really this precise, they’d all be rich by now!
“Xiufang, I’m taking you shopping today. Don’t hold back, alright?”
Sun Jiaying beamed as she hooked arms with Zhou Xiufang. “Whatever you want to eat or buy, it’s on me.”
“Wow, so generous! Had a sweet time with your boyfriend last night?” Zhou Xiufang teased.
Blushing, Sun Jiaying rolled her eyes. “Hey, I’m being nice for once, and you’re making fun of me. Maybe I shouldn’t treat you after all.”
“Alright, alright, my bad. But what did you guys do last night?” Zhou Xiufang asked curiously.
At this, Sun Jiaying perked up. “You won’t believe it. My boyfriend and his colleagues caught the robber yesterday! They even get a bonus for it!”
Zhou Xiufang was surprised. “The robber? Wasn’t he hiding in the police station?”
“Exactly! And the craziest part? They didn’t even catch him themselves—they used a fortune-teller to figure it out. Can you believe it?” Lowering her voice conspiratorially, she added, “And that fortune-teller works right here on this street.”
Zhou Xiufang couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re making it sound so mysterious. I don’t believe in these things.”
“You might not, but doesn’t your boyfriend’s family believe in this stuff? Didn’t he take your birth details to have them checked, saying you’re lucky for him? If they can do that, why not check if you and your boyfriend are a perfect match too?”
Zhou Xiufang found herself both amused and exasperated.
As a Chinese who had only returned to Hong Kong last year, she had been struck by how superstitious the culture was here. Engagements required auspicious dates, and even matchmaking involved comparing birth charts.
“No, thanks. I don’t believe in it.”
“Fine, but then why not accompany me? I want to get a reading,” Sun Jiaying said with a sly grin.
Zhou Xiufang caught on quickly. “Ah, so you’re the one who wants the reading and dragged me along as an excuse.”
The two laughed as they strolled down the street, soon finding Gu Xicao’s stall.
When Zhou Xiufang saw the pale, slim girl with her long hair braided into a neat plait, she froze. The young fortune-teller looked more like a high school student than a master of divination.
Sun Jiaying was also a bit surprised but had already learned some details from Sun Zhaoqian, so she wasn’t too shocked. “Little Master, you’re the one doing the readings?”
“Yes, would you like a reading, miss?”
Seeing two female customers approach, Gu Xicao immediately perked up.
Sun Jiaying pulled Zhou Xiufang to sit down. “Yes, I’d like a reading about my relationship. How much do you charge?”
“188 per reading—no bargaining.”
Gu Xicao noticed Wang Laoshi sneaking glances from behind his newspaper. She twitched her mouth slightly but pretended not to see him.
“188? That’s expensive. Is it accurate?” Sun Jiaying muttered. Although she sounded reluctant, she paid without hesitation.
Zhou Xiufang couldn’t help but smile wryly. Jiaying’s personality was always like this—stingy one moment, extravagant the next.
“It’s accurate. For instance, I already know you’re here to ask about your relationship with Officer Sun.”
Gu Xicao’s calm revelation landed like a bombshell.
Sun Jiaying’s mouth fell open. “I haven’t even said anything yet.”
“You didn’t need to. I already know.” Armed with her gossip system, which could even unearth minor scandals from childhood, Gu Xicao continued, “Miss Sun, you and Officer Sun are a match made in heaven. Your marriage will be smooth, but you mustn’t let him manage the finances in the future. He tends to spend recklessly, is prone to lending money to others, and might even lose money gambling on stocks.”
“You’re spot on! Zhaoqian always spends his salary as soon as he gets it. I’ve told him off so many times!”
Sun Jiaying was initially stunned but quickly nodded in agreement. “When I get back, I’ll tell him to hand over his salary!”
“Well said! Officer Sun is lucky to have you as his girlfriend,” Gu Xicao said with a smile.
