Time-Traveling to the Seventies : My Troublemaker Husband is Full of Secrets Chapter 54

Chapter 54 : The Inexplicable Sister

After Yu Huimin asked this question, she realized she had been a bit abrupt.

If he knew that her family was so proactive, it might make her daughter seem less noble.

So Yu Huimin smiled and waved her hands, saying, “It’s fine, it’s fine. I just heard them calling you that, and it sounded similar to the name of a relative of mine, so I asked casually. Don’t mind it, okay?”

Han Zhenyu felt that this elder woman’s enthusiasm was a bit inexplicable, but he didn’t think much of it in any other way.

After a few polite exchanges, he took the list and went to the office.

Later, he would go outside the city to meet Li Shaohua and deal with the goods he had brought.

Director Li of the transport team was writing documents in the office. When he saw Han Zhenyu come back alone, without his nephew, he knew they had been trading goods again.

He signed the form without asking any questions.

In fact, everyone in the transport team knew very well that drivers who travel long distances never come back empty-handed, they all have to bring something with them.

Han Zhenyu noticed that there was no one else in the office, so he said before leaving “Director, Shaohua asked me to tell you that I’ll be going to your place for dinner tonight.”

“I see,” Li Chong nodded with a smile, then suddenly remembered that not long ago, Chen Dongsheng, the director of a workshop, had asked about Han Zhenyu.

From what he said, Han Zhenyu and his little girl should be dating.

Thinking about Chen Dongsheng’s daughter, who worked as an officer in the trade union, Li Chong felt the two would make a good match.

Just as he was about to ask about their progress, another driver came in to ask for his signature, so Chen Chong had to drop the subject.

Han Zhenyu said goodbye and took the signed form to the Finance Department.

Yu Huimin looked very happy when she returned. She didn’t go home after work but went straight to a workshop to find her husband.

As soon as Chen Dongsheng walked out of the office, he saw his wife walking toward him with a smile on her face.

He asked, “Why are you here? What’s the matter?”

Seeing workers passing by after getting off work, Yu Huimin didn’t mention seeing Han Zhenyu. She just smiled and said, “I happened to pass by here, so I came to see if you’ve finished your work?”

The couple had been married for many years and could understand each other’s thoughts with just a glance.

Chen Dongsheng said, “I don’t have much to do today. I was just getting ready to leave.”

When they arrived home, Yu Huimin immediately began talking to her husband about Han Zhenyu.

“I passed by the transport team this afternoon and happened to see a few vehicles coming back. So I took a look and talked to the young man.”

Chen Dongsheng raised his eyebrows and said, “You look so happy, are you interested?”

Yu Huimin smiled and said, “The young man is very impressive. He’s taller than our eldest son, looks to be over 1.8 meters, speaks well, and is steady.”

Then she sighed and said with a little regret, “He has both talent and looks, but his family background is a bit lacking. It would be better if he came from a working-class family. I don’t know what the situation is like in his rural hometown. Will it hinder our daughter in the future?”

“There are many families with both parents working, but doesn’t our daughter look down on them?”

Chen Dongsheng picked up the newspaper on the table and said casually, “Once they’re married, both husband and wife will have to work. How will they have time to go back to the countryside?”

Yu Huimin felt that what her husband said made sense. Since they both worked in the city, they would likely have little to do with the countryside in the future.

She thought for a moment and said, “Why don’t we ask our daughter to invite him over for a meal so we can find out more about his family?”

Chen Dongsheng nodded. “When Honghong comes back, discuss it with her and have her find a time to bring him over. Also, let Sujuan know and ask her not to look for a partner for Honghong just yet.”

“Okay, I’ll tell her when Honghong comes back,” Yu Huimin agreed with a smile. Then she added, “Let Sujuan come and help check. She’s better at judging people than we are.”

Chen Sujuan was Chen Dongsheng’s sister and the vice chairman of the machinery factory’s trade union. She had no daughters of her own and doted on her niece more than her own sons. She had even helped arrange a job for Chen Hong.

Chen Dongsheng said, “Sujuan mentioned she’d stop by tonight, so it’s a good chance to bring this up with her.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me earlier? I could’ve gone to the cafeteria to get a couple of meat dishes,” Yu Huimin said, giving her husband a reproachful look as she opened a drawer to search for their meat coupons.

Her sister-in-law cared deeply about appearances. Whether or not she ate, Yu Huimin knew she needed to make preparations herself. Otherwise, Sujuan might feel slighted and become sarcastic when she was unhappy.

Yu Huimin had dealt with Sujuan for years and had long figured out her temper.

If Sujuan had been an ordinary person, Yu Huimin wouldn’t have bothered to make the effort. But Sujuan had married well and was capable in her own right. She had helped arrange jobs for several children in the family. Even if it was just for appearances, Yu Huimin knew she had to show respect.

After finding two meat coupons, Yu Huimin said, “I’ll see if I can get some meat.”

Chen Dongsheng, pleased to see his wife being so thoughtful toward his sister, waved his hand with a smile. “Don’t bother. She said she wouldn’t be eating here. She’s just coming over tonight to talk about Honghong.”

Hearing this, Yu Huimin put the meat coupons back in the drawer and said with a smile, “Then I’ll make some noodles. We can just have something simple.”

“Honghong isn’t coming back for dinner?” Chen Dongsheng asked.

Yu Huimin smiled and glared at him. “You really don’t understand romance, do you? That young man just got back. They haven’t seen each other in so long, they should go out and watch a movie or something.”

“Oh, I forgot about that,” Chen Dongsheng said, patting his forehead with a chuckle.

Then, with a sigh and a hint of displeasure, he added, “My darling daughter, whom I’ve raised for so many years, is about to be taken away by a wolf cub. I really can’t bear it.”

“You were worried when your daughter didn’t have a boyfriend, and now that she does, you can’t bear to let her go. You always want it your way,” Yu Huimin said, smiling as she shook her head. Then she picked up a basin and started kneading dough.

Just then, Chen Hong came home. She opened the door and saw her mother rolling noodles. Dropping her things on a chair, she complained, “Ugh, I’m so tired today. Mom, I’m starving. Do we have any peach cakes at home? Let me eat two pieces to fill up first.”

Yu Huimin and Chen Dongsheng exchanged a surprised look. Yu Huimin smiled and pointed to the drawer. “I saw there were still a few pieces left yesterday. Go get them yourself.”

Chen Dongsheng set down his newspaper and asked with a smile, “What made you so tired? What kind of hard work could the union have you doing? Even if there was work, aren’t there male comrades? How could they let you girls handle it?”

Chen Hong finished a piece of peach cake and pouted, “We were doing inventory at the warehouse today and were shorthanded. Our leader saw us sitting idle and asked us to go help. I didn’t even get a sip of water all afternoon. And I heard we have to go again tomorrow.”

Yu Huimin frowned. “Who sent you there? Does your aunt know?”

She had never let her daughter do heavy work since she was young. Even after joining the union, Chen Hong’s work had been clerical. How could they send a young girl to do such labor in a warehouse?

Chen Hong replied, “My aunt was out on business today and wasn’t there. Chairman Xie asked us to go.”

Hearing it was the union chairman who had given the order, Yu Huimin was clearly displeased, but she said nothing further.

After all, Sujuan was only the vice chairman. Even if she had been there, she would still have to follow the leader’s arrangements.
