Chapter 38 The Dream of the Gold Vault Shattered
Young Master Wan looked at the empty cave in front of him and was shocked. “Where’s the gold? How come it’s all gone?”
The guard was stunned and stammered, “Young Master, it was still here when we left. How come it’s all gone now?”
Young Master Wan was panicked and strode into the cave. He searched everywhere, but he couldn’t find a single piece of gold, even in the deepest part!
“How could this be?! So much gold, how come there’s not a single piece left?!” Young Master Wan’s legs gave way and he collapsed onto the ground. Looking at the scene before him, he felt as if his soul had been drained.
“Fenglang! What happened?” Miss Chu heard the commotion and hurried in.
Young Master Wan raised his hand, pointing at the empty space in front of him, and said in a trembling voice, “Everything is gone. Our Wan family’s last chance is gone!”
The Prime Minister’s mansion was robbed, and they couldn’t find a single piece of gold in the entire mansion.
Even the palace was robbed, even the Empress’s golden hairpin was gone.
The national treasury was empty, and the officials’ salaries couldn’t be paid. They were relying on the gold from the former dynasty’s national treasury to save them.
Now even this place was empty. The Prime Minister’s family would probably not even be able to pay their servants’ wages in a few days.
Miss Chu looked at the place he was pointing to and didn’t understand what had happened. “Didn’t they say there was a lot of gold here? How come there’s nothing? Fenglang, did we come to the wrong place?”
Young Master Wan shook his head helplessly, “No, I was here last night, and there was gold everywhere.”
“Young Master!” The guard suddenly shouted, “Could it be that the thieves who knocked us out did this?!”
Young Master Wan’s eyes widened, “Yes, it was those thieves! They shouldn’t have gone far. Quickly send someone to chase after them!”
The guard hurriedly replied, “Yes, Young Master!”
Then he left.
Young Master Wan sat down dejectedly, “What kind of thieves are so powerful that they could carry away so much gold? Could they be immortals?”
Miss Chu finally understood what was going on. She leaned against Young Master Wan and cried loudly, “The gold in the cave is gone. Does that mean we have no money to spend?!”
Young Master Wan nodded, “But if your Chu family sells their assets, you should still have enough money to spend.”
Miss Chu was used to living a life of luxury. Since her family was robbed, she hadn’t eaten bird’s nest until now.
She cried even harder, “The gold! Our gold! It’s all gone! How are we going to live now?!”
Earlier, she had been dreaming of owning tens of thousands of taels of gold, but now it was all gone.
Miss Chu’s heart ached terribly. She sat on the ground and cried uncontrollably.
Young Master Wan was even more annoyed by her whining. He yelled at her, “Shut up!”
Miss Chu was even more aggrieved by his shout, “I knew I shouldn’t have come with you.”
Young Master Wan grabbed her collar and pulled her up, throwing her heavily to the stone gate, “Get out!”
Miss Chu fell into the mud, taking a mouthful of dirt. Tears streamed down her face.
The cries from inside the cave slowly reached the outside.
Several kilometers away from the cave, Fu Yanting brought Chu Chenyin and Fu Jianghong back to the inn.
“Big brother, sister-in-law…” Fu Jianghong slowly woke up from her sleep.
Chu Chenyin quickly went to her side, “Third sister, are you feeling better?”
Fu Jianghong sat up and looked at her bandaged leg, “I’m fine, sister-in-law. I’m not as delicate as those ladies in the capital. I’m tough. It’s just a snakebite. It’s happened before!”
“You’ve been bitten by snakes often?” Chu Chenyin asked in surprise.
Fu Jianghong looked at Fu Yanting beside her and smiled, “When my brother, my second brother, and I followed father to the battlefield, we would ambush the enemy in the grass for two or three days. It’s not just poisonous snakes we’ve eaten, we’ve even been bitten by centipedes and spiders.”
Chu Chenyin couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe in her heart. It was truly not easy for their family to survive until now.
Especially Fu Yanting, his physique was so strong.
She used to be able to take down three or four people with her bare hands, but facing Fu Yanting, she had to think twice.
Thinking about this, Chu Chenyin couldn’t help but recall the scene of them kissing in the space, and her ears turned red again.
Fu Yanting was much calmer.
If you didn’t look closely at his eyes, it was hard to tell anything.
Chu Chenyin strongly suspected that he was not only good at pretending, but also a closet pervert.
However, she was right about the first part, but she was completely wrong about the second.
In the days that followed, she learned that Fu Yanting had nothing to do with the word “闷” (闷 – dull, stuffy).
“Third sister, since you’re awake, let’s go back to Mengru County.” Fu Yanting walked to their side and said.
“So soon?” Fu Jianghong asked in confusion.
