Chapter 50: Witnessing Her Courage
“Why would you go up the mountain in the rain?” Zhan Jingting was puzzled, but also felt a sense of urgency.
The woman, soaked to the bone, was wiping the rain off the pregnant woman’s face, while crying, “Today is the 15th, we went to the temple on the mountaintop to pray for blessings, hoping that the Buddha would bless the child in my sister’s womb to be born safely.”
“Ah—” The pregnant woman, in excruciating pain, contorted her face, as if her internal organs were tearing, “It hurts so much! Ah!” She clutched her abdomen, lying on the pile of hay, gasping for breath.
Lin Banxia quickly squatted down, anxiously judging, “She’s probably going to give birth, this is the onset of labor, the ambulance can’t get up here, even if it’s already reached the foot of the mountain, it will take at least 20 minutes for the doctors to get here.”
“What to do, what to do? Sister… you have to hold on!” Her sister was clearly panicking, clutching her sister’s hand, crying uncontrollably.
“Let me check how dilated she is, so we can prepare early.” As she spoke, Lin Banxia turned to look at Zhan Jingting, “You go out first! I’m going to deliver the baby!”
“What? You’re going to deliver the baby?” Zhan Jingting looked at her in disbelief.
“Go now!” The situation was urgent, Lin Banxia even pushed him, “Go, go, go, don’t come in unless I call you!”
“Can you do it?” He asked as he walked.
“I can!”
After pushing him out, she went back to the pregnant woman and squatted down.
Zhan Jingting didn’t interfere, standing with his back to the inside, under the leaky roof of the dilapidated temple. His expensive suit jacket was already soaked through.
He was worried about her, because this was a matter of life and death.
“Banxia, don’t be reckless!” He couldn’t help but shout, “Let the doctor handle it!” The ambulance should be arriving soon.
Lin Banxia reached out to check the pregnant woman’s forehead, ignoring him, she simply said to her sister, “I’m a doctor, help your sister take off her pants, let me check, I’ll see how dilated she is.”
“Ah…” The intense contractions caused the woman to cry out in agony, grabbing her arm.
Her sister was extremely flustered, trembling all over, she was helpless, the ambulance could still be on its way.
Lin Banxia, to ease their worries, started checking while saying, “I’ve given birth to two children myself, I have experience with labor, and besides, I really am a doctor.”
“My sister’s baby, the last prenatal checkup said the umbilical cord was wrapped around its neck twice.” Her sister cried in panic, in this situation, it should be a C-section.
But Lin Banxia remained calm, she checked manually, “She’s at least six centimeters dilated, the baby is about to be born.”
The pregnant woman was in pain and panic, with an unknown fear, “Doctor, please… this child must be born safely, I… I love him so much.”
Zhan Jingting stood outside, looking at the thick fog, the sound of wind and rain filled his ears.
He couldn’t hear the conversation inside, only occasionally hearing the heart-wrenching screams of agony…
Giving birth is so painful, and Lin Banxia had given birth to two children for him. It was understandable that Zhan Jingting felt a mixture of emotions at this moment.
“The umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck. Will the baby die?” his sister was very worried.
“If you had told me earlier, it wouldn’t have happened. As long as the umbilical cord doesn’t strangle the baby’s neck when it comes out, and the baby doesn’t suffocate, I’ll pull the umbilical cord with my hand.” Banxia seemed very experienced, reassuring the two sisters.
But in fact, she was deliberately calm. She had never experienced this kind of childbirth before.
“Ah…”
The pregnant woman was sweating profusely from pain. “I must give birth to this baby safely. Doctor, please save me.”
“Okay, don’t strain yourself, save your energy.” Banxia prepared while instructing her, “When the baby is about to come out, push hard, but don’t hold your breath for too long, otherwise the baby is prone to oxygen deprivation and cerebral palsy.”
“Okay…”
“Can you tell me about the frequency of your contractions now? Can you still bear it?” Banxia asked while observing.
She took off her coat and spread it over the pregnant woman’s legs.
Although the coat was wet, it was better than the baby rolling onto the hay, which was covered in dust.
It was summer now, so it wouldn’t be too cold.
Time passed minute by minute. As the contractions became longer, the excruciating pain before the baby’s arrival was like sharp blades, cutting through the flesh, penetrating the bone marrow.
The pregnant woman’s cries became more and more intense, causing Zhan Jingting to furrow his brow slightly.
At this moment, Lin Banxia was most worried about postpartum hemorrhage. She also hoped that the doctor would arrive soon.
Outside, the rain was getting heavier and the visibility was very low.
At this moment, the ambulance had stopped at the foot of the mountain. The doctors were very dedicated. Holding umbrellas and carrying medical boxes, bags, and various items, they ran towards the hillside.
In the dilapidated temple, as the baby let out a loud cry, Zhan Jingting’s slightly furrowed brow relaxed. He didn’t turn around, but he did feel a sense of relief.
A little boy was born safely. His sister was so excited she didn’t know what to do. “He’s born! He’s born!!”
The exhausted mother-to-be gasped for breath. She seemed to have used all her strength. She lay down, exhausted, with a look of contented joy on her face.
Her sister picked up the baby wrapped in a coat, filled with joy and tears. “Mother and child are safe, that’s the best. Thank you, doctor.”
“Thank you…” The mother-to-be also looked at Lin Banxia weakly, expressing her heartfelt gratitude.
Soon, the doctors arrived. They helped with the treatment, and then some carried the mother-to-be, while others carried the baby. Everyone held umbrellas as they walked down the mountain.
As they were leaving, they left two thick bath towels for Banxia and Zhan Jingting. The younger sister stopped in her tracks, tears in her eyes, and knelt down to thank Lin Banxia.
“Little Master, there’s more to this chapter, please continue reading, it gets even more exciting!” “Get up, get up!” Banxia was startled and quickly reached out to help her up. “It was just a small favor, we met today, it’s fate.”
The rain was getting heavier and showed no signs of stopping.
The younger sister told her, “My sister is carrying the child of the man she loves, but unexpectedly, this man is heartless and callous. He promised to marry her, but he disappeared without a trace…”
Zhan Jingting turned his head slightly.
The younger sister continued, “My sister has always been serious about this relationship, so… no matter how much her family tried to dissuade her, she still wanted to give birth to the child and have something to hold onto for the rest of her life.”
“Single mothers are the greatest.” Banxia couldn’t help but exclaim, “Even though they know the road ahead is difficult, they still go ahead without hesitation.”
Zhan Jingting felt a pang of guilt when he heard these unintentional words.
Banxia encouraged her younger sister a few more words, and the younger sister said goodbye to them, “May good fortune always be with you, brother and sister, you will be happy! The blessings of today will always be with you! Goodbye!”
“Goodbye.” Banxia waved to her and watched her walk away.
“In this world, women are always more affectionate than men.” Banxia couldn’t help but sigh.
Zhan Jingting felt a little bit like he was being put on the spot, “You can’t generalize.”
Lin Banxia turned to look at him, she hesitated for a few seconds, unable to find the right words, so she stopped talking.
Standing under the eaves of the dilapidated temple, she withdrew her gaze and stretched out her bloodstained hands, letting the rain wash and scrub them. The smell of blood was pungent, but her eyes showed no disgust.
Today was a fulfilling and meaningful day for her. She was happy, and a smile unconsciously spread across her lips.
Seeing this, Zhan Jingting digested the words of the younger sister. He felt a mixture of emotions in his heart.
He thought of the day Banxia gave birth, her mood… was there a hint of despair mixed in with her strength?
