Seventies Countryside Medical Romance Chapter 85

Chapter 85: Could It Be Any Better?

“We’ll make do for now. At least we have a stove for boiling medicine,” Jiang Nian said.

Li Rui was the most disappointed. “I even caught a duck to bring over. I wanted to celebrate your new home, but I guess I’ll have to wait two days.”

In the afternoon, people from Yanjiazhuang brought over several wooden beds and carried blankets and other things.

“Dr. Jiang, these are the beds that were custom-made. The blankets were requested from the town. Director Yan asked us to bring them over first and ask if you need anything else. The health center can apply for any necessary supplies from the town health center.”

The person who delivered the things was Zheng Jian Guo, who was leading a group of villagers who had come to watch the excitement.

Some of them had been to her clinic and might not remember her, but they were familiar with her face.

“Okay, I understand. Please carry these beds to the backyard first. As for the things we need to add, there are a few. Do we need to write a formal application?”

“Yes, I’ll go to the commune to get a form for you. Once you fill out the application, you can submit it directly to the commune. Director Yan will take care of it.” Zheng Jian Guo said, instructing the people behind him to carry the things.

Jiang Nian’s place was bustling with activity. The enthusiastic villagers surrounded her, asking if she would be staying here from now on.

It was hard to get rid of everyone. Even she was sweating from the heat.

After everyone left, Ye Zhiqiu said with a smile, “It feels pretty good here. It’s spacious, and we can apply for anything we need. It’s much more convenient than before.”

Li Rui rolled his eyes at her. “It’s pretty good. Every medical expense will be recorded, and you’ll get a fixed salary. By the way, the director’s salary should be higher, but it won’t exceed 100 yuan. I wonder if it’s enough for you two greedy girls to eat and live on?”

He was making fun of them, and Ye Zhiqiu’s smile instantly disappeared.

She looked up at Jiang Nian, and Jiang Nian said with a smile, “Don’t listen to him. We still have to go out and collect herbs. The accounting isn’t as strict as he says. It’s just that we’re not as free as before.”

Ye Zhiqiu punched Li Rui’s arm. “I’ll still call you Brother Rui. You just like to scare me.”

Zhang Er watched this scene with envy. Because of the favor she had done for him, he couldn’t be as carefree as Li Rui. He was respectful and caring towards both Jiang Nian and Ye Zhiqiu.

He should be grateful for his current life.

Seeing them bicker, Jiang Nian shook her head helplessly. “I don’t know when Director Qi will send the amnesiac over. We can’t leave this place unattended. You guys stay here. I’ll go up the mountain. If I’m lucky, we’ll have wild game for dinner.”

“Master, aren’t you going to eat lunch?” Ye Zhiqiu asked.

“No, you three can eat whatever you want.”

Li Rui suddenly remembered something and shouted at her back, “Why don’t I take you back to Zhoujia Village? I don’t know if it’s a pheasant nest, but there are so many pheasants on the mountain these days. They’re like bamboo shoots after a spring rain. A lot of people have caught a lot of them.”

It’s just that others caught them secretly and didn’t want to make a fuss. It was okay to catch a pheasant occasionally to have a feast, but if you caught too many, it would be considered stealing from the state and taking state property.

But most people who lived near the mountains had an unspoken agreement. As long as they didn’t catch large animals or overdo it, everyone would turn a blind eye.

“No need. I’ll just take a look. It depends on my luck whether I catch anything or not.”

Jiang Nian knew about this, of course. After all, she was the one who released those pheasants.

Zhang Er looked at the duck that was still flapping its wings in the courtyard. They had also brought two chickens from Zhoujia Village. He asked them quietly, “What are we going to eat? Should we just make do with something?”

He looked at Ye Zhiqiu. His meaning was clear.

She would cook whatever she wanted. If she didn’t cook, they wouldn’t eat.

Ye Zhiqiu rolled her eyes at them. “Master isn’t here. I’ll make you two some noodles.”

She cooked for her Master. Since her Master wasn’t here, she didn’t want to bother. As her Master often said, it was better to learn something than to waste time.

As a result, Li Rui complained to Zhang Er behind her back, “This little girl is obsessed with her teacher. Since Jiang Nian isn’t here, we’ll just have to make do with whatever we can get.”

Zhang Er smiled and said nothing.

He had just come home and eaten a meal of sorghum rice. He had to stretch his neck to swallow it. For him, being able to eat Ye Zhiqiu’s three-grain noodles was already a blessing.

Besides, he would be living here in the future, and he would have a job. He could eat good food every day.

Song Yanbai was sent over in the afternoon. The hospital ambulance brought him directly here and carried him to the bed in the backyard.

Director Qi and Yan Jin were both there, which showed how important Song Yanbai was.

Jiang Nian came back neither too early nor too late. She didn’t have a pheasant in her hand, but she was carrying a sheep that had been gutted and plucked.

“He’s here?” She asked, handing the sheep to Zhang Er, who was there to receive it.

This wasn’t a matter of unspoken agreement, but a habit that had been cultivated over time.

Jiang Nian was easy to get along with, but over time, you would realize that she had high expectations of her companions. If they didn’t meet them, she wouldn’t want them.

“He’s here. He’s in the backyard. Zhiqiu is checking his wounds.” Zhang Er said, then added, “Li Zhiqing said that we could put nameplates on the doors of those wards. Dr. Jiang, do you think we need to do that?”

“Yes, he’s quite clever. Do it as he said.” Jiang Nian looked around and didn’t see Li Rui. She asked, “Where is he?”

“He went with Director Yan. He said he’ll be back later.”

Jiang Nian went to the backyard and saw that one of the wards was open.

She walked in and saw Ye Zhiqiu bandaging the injured man. His wheat-colored chest muscles were exposed, and he was quite well-built.

“How is he?” She asked as she walked in.

“I just changed his dressing. The chest wound is healing normally. He has a headache and feels dizzy and nauseous when he moves.” Ye Zhiqiu kept a straight face throughout.

“Okay.”

Jiang Nian nodded and sat down by the bed, taking the man’s wrist and feeling his pulse.

That faint scent of medicine…

It felt so familiar.

Song Yanbai looked at the girl in front of him. Her face was exquisite, and her figure was beautiful. She was so beautiful that she looked like a fairy from heaven.

“Are you a doctor?”

“Yes.” Jiang Nian released his wrist. She had a general understanding of his condition. “They should have told you about your situation at the city hospital. I won’t repeat it. For now, just focus on healing your wounds. You have a head injury. Don’t think too much for the next two days. We’ll talk about your amnesia when your wounds are stable.”

“Then… will I be okay?” Song Yanbai was feeling a little helpless. His intelligence was fine, but his mind was blank. He woke up, and people were talking to him, but he had no memory of it.
