After Gu Xicao uttered her words, the hall fell silent for a moment, followed by laughter from several ladies.
The Third Madam covered her mouth with a handkerchief and chuckled, “Master Gu, you must be mistaken. There are five dice inside; how could there be no points?”
“Exactly. Master Gu has such a great sense of humor,” the Fourth Madam added, surprisingly siding with the Third Madam. Though it seemed like a playful remark, it was, in fact, a veiled mockery.
Gu Xicao ignored the two madams and turned to Gu Xinhui, whose expression had darkened. “Third Young Master, shall we reveal the dice now? Let’s see if my calculation was accurate or not—it’ll be clear once you open it.”
Gu Xinhui’s smile stiffened slightly. Removing the cigar from his mouth, he looked at Gu Xicao with uncertainty. “Could it be… you’re skilled in gambling?”
Gu Xicao laughed outright, unabashed. “Third Young Master, you jest. I never gamble. While I’ve heard some people have sharp enough ears to discern the exact points rolled, unfortunately, I lack that talent.”
“Then you…” Gu Xinhui started to speak but was interrupted by a raised hand from the Old Master.
The Old Master studied Gu Xicao thoughtfully. “Third Son, open the dice cup.”
Gu Xinhui hesitated, embarrassment flickering across his face.
Although he dared to refer to the Old Master as “the old man” behind his back, he wouldn’t dare argue in front of him. “Yes, Father.”
He opened the dice cup.
Secretary Lin froze, staring at the empty dice cup in disbelief. “How… how could this be? The five dice have disappeared!”
The Third Madam and the others were equally stunned, their gazes fixed on Gu Xinhui in astonishment.
Gu Xicao remarked, “What luck! I was right—there truly isn’t a single point. Third Young Master, your trick is quite impressive. Fourth Miss, why don’t you just take out those five dice now?”
Everyone instinctively turned to look at Gu Yueshu.
Gu Yueshu’s ears reddened. She extended her right hand, and there, in her palm, were the missing five dice.
“You… you all…”
The Third Madam widened her eyes. “How did the dice end up in Miss Shu’s hand?!”
Gu Xinliu stammered, “We discussed it earlier… planning to play a little prank on Master Gu. Third Brother would roll the dice, and Fourth Sister would hide them. But I didn’t expect Master Gu to figure it out.”
“Figure it out? Or did someone leak the secret?”
Gu Yueshu threw down the dice and suspiciously eyed Gu Yuehua.
Gu Yuehua wasn’t foolish. She sneered, “Fourth Sister, I had already gone upstairs when you discussed this. I didn’t know a thing. Besides, we’re sisters. Why would I help Master Gu? I believe she really does have skills.”
“That’s debatable.” Gu Yueshu’s tone turned sarcastic. “Who knows if Fifth Brother secretly told her when he went upstairs?”
“Fourth Sister, you—!” Gu Xinliu was infuriated by the insinuation and couldn’t hold back his anger.
“Enough! Arguing in front of the master? If you don’t care about your dignity, I still care about mine!”
The Old Master’s stern rebuke silenced his children instantly. Like frightened quails, they dared not say another word.
“Master,” the Old Master turned to Gu Xicao, his demeanor especially respectful. “My children were only playing a joke on you earlier. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Taking the checkbook from the silent Second Madam, he quickly wrote down a figure and handed it to Gu Xicao. “This is a token of our sincerity.”
Gu Xicao silently muttered to herself, Using money to show off, huh?
But when she accepted the check and saw the amount, her eyes lit up instantly. Tens, hundreds, thousands, millions…?!
Raising her hand, she broke into a bright smile. “Old Master, you’re too generous. Let’s get to the point. What would you like me to calculate for you?”
The Old Master smiled faintly and gestured to his children. “Here’s the thing—I’d like you to calculate their fortunes, both in career and marriage.”
Hearing this, even Gu Xinhui and his siblings, who had looked down on Gu Xicao moments ago, couldn’t help but feel a little nervous.
The older the Old Master grew, the more superstitious he became. Tonight, after witnessing Gu Xicao’s abilities, he might genuinely make decisions about the Gu family’s future successor based on her words.
Gu Xicao’s gaze shifted to the eldest son. He was the eldest but unusually quiet, having not spoken a single word since the beginning. “What’s your name, sir?”
Gu Xinheng replied calmly, “My name is Gu Xinheng. I’m 30 years old and married.”
“Oh, are you currently troubled about having children?” Gu Xicao asked after a moment’s thought.
Gu Xinheng froze in surprise and looked at her with disbelief. “How did you know?”
“I calculated it. Your early years were challenging, but your fortunes will improve steadily in middle age. As for your concern about children, you can rest assured—your wife is already one month pregnant.”
Gu Xicao spoke.
Gu Xinheng was overjoyed, “Is it true? Does Achan really have a child?”
Gu Xicao replied, “If you’re uncertain, you can take her to the hospital for a checkup. This girl will be the only child you and your wife will have.”
“Really?” Gu Xinheng’s face lit up with joy. “Achan and I have always wanted a daughter!”
Gu Xinhui laughed, “Congratulations, Big Brother! Your wish has come true. But daughters will eventually marry. Big Brother, why not think about adopting a son?”
Gu Xinhui’s tone carried a hint of smugness.
The reason was simple: he was also married and had two sons, along with three illegitimate ones. It was these sons that helped him secure the rights to operate the casino.
Gu Xinheng said calmly, “Achan and I will be satisfied with just a daughter. If she’s anything like Second Sister, I’d be overjoyed even in my dreams.”
“Ha!” Gu Xinhui sneered, his face full of disdain. “What can a daughter do? Raising a daughter is like raising a daughter-in-law for someone else. Big Brother, you’re foolish. I told you back then you shouldn’t have married Sister-in-law. Look at you now—you’re this old and only have one daughter. If you’d listened to me, who knows how many sons you’d have by now.”
Old Mr. Gu frowned slightly, clearly displeased that his eldest son would only have a daughter in the future.
Gu Xicao couldn’t stand seeing Gu Xinhui so pleased with himself.
With a smile, she said, “Young Master, don’t be too happy just yet. You might be celebrating too early. Do you really think those sons of yours are yours?”
Gu Xinhui froze. “What are you saying? What do you mean? If they aren’t my sons, then whose are they?!”
“Oh, nothing much,” Gu Xicao shook her head. “I just feel bad for you. Looking at your short neck, it must be from the weight of all those green hats you’re wearing. Your wife inside the house gives you green hats, and the women outside the house do the same. What a pity.”
Everyone was stunned.
Secretary Lin opened her mouth, struggling for a moment before she found her voice. She tugged at Gu Xicao, “Master Gu, you’re joking, right?”
Gu Xicao shook her head. “I don’t joke about things like this. Third Young Master, if you don’t believe me, we can go check right now. See if there’s a man in your wife’s room tonight.”
Everyone in the Gu family was dumbfounded.
Old Mr. Gu was a domineering man with a strong need for control. Although each of his children lived in separate villas, their houses were close enough that just a few steps would take you from one to another.
Tonight, Old Mr. Gu had only summoned his children, leaving behind their spouses and children. As a result, only the Third Lady and her two sons were in the third villa, along with a few maids.
“Shut up! My wife has always been gentle and virtuous. She would never cheat on me!”
Gu Xinhui’s face turned bright red, veins bulging on his neck. Pointing at Gu Xicao, he seemed ready to strike her if not for Gu Xinheng and his siblings holding him back.
“Enough!” Old Mr. Gu’s face darkened as he struck his cane heavily on the ground.
Gu Xinhui turned to Old Mr. Gu in disbelief. “Father, she says my wife cheated on me, that my two sons—your grandsons—aren’t ours. Shouldn’t you throw her out?!”
“We’ll know if it’s true once we see for ourselves,” Old Mr. Gu replied, his voice strong and his expression as grim as a darkened pot. Despite his fury, he remained composed, the wisdom of age evident in his restraint.
“Indeed, we’ll see soon enough,” Fourth Madam, who had earlier sided with the Third Madam, quickly changed her tune to support Gu Xicao now that misfortune had befallen the third household.
The members of the third household trembled with rage, glaring at Gu Xicao with eyes full of anger.
Gu Yueshu pointed at her. “Fine! We’ll check. But if you’re lying, my brother won’t even have to hit you—I’ll tear that mouth of yours apart myself.”
“Let’s go, then.” Gu Xicao remained unnervingly calm, even appearing a little excited.
The reason was simple: it was her first time personally catching someone in the act.
The third villa stood in the northwest corner.
The three-story Western-style building housed only the Third Madam, the Third Young Master’s family, the Fourth Miss, and their servants.
Tonight, with the Third Madam away, only the Third Young Master’s wife and their two sons were left. The children had gone to bed early.
But from the master bedroom came the unmistakable sounds of intimacy.
In the pitch-black room, heavy breathing was the only sound.
“Ah!” The Third Young Master’s wife suddenly bumped into the bedside table, letting out a soft cry.
Startled, the man stopped and turned on the light. He was a muscular figure, with a narrow waist and broad shoulders, his honey-colored skin exuding vitality.
“Are you alright? Did I hurt you?”
The Third Young Master’s wife, rubbing her head, smiled gently. “I’m fine. I was just careless. But you’re so rough tonight.”
She reached out to touch the veins bulging on his neck.
Arong laughed awkwardly. “My bad. It’s been so long since we’ve been together. I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too. I doubt they’ll come back tonight. Why don’t you stay over?”
Her voice was soft and filled with affection.
Arong was about to agree when the door was suddenly kicked open with a loud bang.
Startled, they turned to see none other than members of the Gu family standing in the doorway.
Gu Yueshu and her siblings were dumbfounded, while the third household burned with rage.
“You traitor! How dare you betray me!” Gu Xinhui rushed forward, raising his hand to strike his wife.
Arong reacted quickly, grabbing his hand and pushing him aside. Having lived a life of luxury, Gu Xinhui was no match for Arong’s strength. He fell heavily to the ground with a cry of pain.
“You… you…” The Third Madam, breathing heavily, stared in disbelief at Arong. “You’re with him? He’s just a gardener! How could he compare to my son?!”
