Chapter 62: Don’t Look
The casual attitude and tone made Jian Yao’s heart skip a beat.
Jian Yao’s hands, which were clasped in front of her, tightened. “Grandma, I can’t accept this.”
It was too valuable!
The old lady patted Jian Yao’s hand reassuringly. “What’s so valuable about this? You silly child.”
She casually picked up the jewelry box and placed it aside. From underneath, she took out a sealed document, opened it, and handed it to Jian Yao.
“Ayan’s grandfather passed away early. This is a pre-prepared welcome gift for his wife. Open it and take a look.”
In a family like the Gu family, the visible jewelry and antiques might not be the most valuable.
But what was in a folder was most likely priceless.
Jian Yao looked helplessly at Gu’s Mother.
Gu’s Mother smiled and warmly encouraged her, “A gift from an elder cannot be refused. This is Grandpa’s intention. You don’t have to be so restrained.”
When Jian Yao took the document, her fingertips trembled slightly.
Her slender white fingers hooked the corner of the wax seal and gently peeled it off, revealing the words “Gu Corporation Stock Transfer Agreement” at the top of the document.
Jian Yao’s eyes widened in surprise, her beautiful peach blossom eyes shining brightly.
It was Gu Corporation stock, not just some branch of Gu Corporation.
Even if it was only two percent, it was an astronomical amount.
Moreover, the Gu family’s holdings were vast. To be able to give a share to a newly married granddaughter was already extremely generous.
Grandma Gu looked like she was showing off a treasure. Her eyes crinkled with a smile, adding a few more lines. “Your grandpa already signed and sealed this. You just need to write your name on it and it will take effect immediately.”
She took the pen that had been prepared in advance from the servant and, before Jian Yao could refuse, directly shoved it into her hand.
“Hurry and write, hurry and write. Your uncles and aunts will be back soon, and we have to collect red envelopes!”
Jian Yao bit her lip, hesitant to write.
Gu’s Mother gently persuaded her from the side. “Yaoyao, we’re family. You deserve this. Don’t feel burdened.”
They were rich, not stupid.
The gifts were prepared in advance, but not everything was given to everyone.
If Ayan had bad taste and brought home a troublemaker, they wouldn’t even think about giving her shares.
Jian Yao deserved it, and they, as elders, gave it willingly.
Jian Yao held the pen, her eyes gradually turning red.
She grew up in an orphanage in her childhood and was treated well by her parents after returning to the Jian family.
But they weren’t the ones who raised her from a young age, so there was always a certain degree of restraint. Leaving her an inheritance was mostly due to their blood ties.
This was the first time an elder told her that they gave her something because she deserved it.
Just that.
With Grandma and Grandpa’s gifts as a benchmark, Gu’s Mother’s diamond necklace and earrings seemed much more approachable.
“Mother doesn’t know what you like, but the ring Ayan prepared for you for your wedding was a diamond, right? This matches it perfectly, making it a set.”
Gu’s Mother picked up the necklace and held it against Jian Yao’s slender white neck, her eyes full of admiration.
“You’re at an age like a flower, you should dress up beautifully.”
As she spoke, Gu Zhiyan and the rest of the Gu family finally arrived one after another.
The Gu family had many descendants. A crowd of them came in, all wearing custom-made suits, all with cold and domineering faces, looking like they were attending some kind of business awards ceremony.
Jian Yao considered herself to have a good memory, but even she couldn’t tell who was who at this moment.
Fortunately, they probably knew her predicament and introduced themselves before talking to her.
Jian Yao politely greeted each one and carefully memorized their names.
After finally getting to know everyone, the stack of red envelopes in her hand was already quite thick.
Grandma finally remembered something. “Yaoyao, you don’t have our contact information, do you?”
She took out her phone, opened WeChat, and let Jian Yao scan it. “Add Grandma. If Grandma misses you, I’ll just send you a message.”
“Okay.”
Jian Yao obediently took out her phone, scanned the old lady’s QR code, and carefully wrote down a note.
Gu’s Mother, who was beside her, also quickly took out her phone to join the WeChat group.
Seeing that others around were also eager to join, Old Lady Gu gave them a stern look. “I’ll add Yao Yao to the group. If you have anything, just talk in the group.”
Turning back to Jian Yao, her eyes instantly softened with a smile. “Our Gu family doesn’t have much, but we do have some money, and we have some connections in Beijing. If anyone dares to bully you, just tell them in the group, and let your useless uncles and aunts take care of them.”
Jian Yao looked silently at the uncles and aunts who were usually only seen in financial news, those “useless” uncles and aunts, and carefully nodded.
After the elders finished giving their gifts, Gu Zhiyan brought out the gifts they had prepared and distributed them to the elders.
Gu Zhiyan had arranged everything thoughtfully, and the gifts for everyone were chosen according to their preferences.
However, when introducing Old Lady Gu and Gu’s Mother, he specifically mentioned that Jian Yao had personally chosen them.
Jian Yao originally thought her gifts were not out of line, but compared to the gifts of Old Lady Gu and Gu’s Mother, hers seemed a bit lacking.
Unexpectedly, the old lady and Gu’s Mother were surprisingly happy.
Especially the doll set given to the old lady.
Jian Yao carefully observed their expressions, seeing that they genuinely liked it, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Old Lady Gu said she would cook something delicious for her, and she really meant it.
She personally cooked.
Gu’s Mother was worried about her going to the kitchen, so Gu Zhiyan stayed in the living room to chat with the elders.
Jian Yao finally found some free time to look around.
The old house was very large. She didn’t dare to go far, only wandering around the tea room next to the living room.
Unlike the grand decoration of the living room, the tea room was much warmer, with many photos of the Gu family members hanging on the wall.
Almost all of them were family portraits.
Jian Yao immediately saw a photo of a young Gu Zhiyan in an old photo.
He was wearing a black little suit, with a red bow tie, his lips were red and his teeth were white, almost a perfect replica of his current appearance.
So cute!
Jian Yao’s eyes widened slightly. This was a Gu Zhiyan she had never seen before.
She followed the photo wall step by step, and saw an album on the rosewood bookshelf in the corner.
The old-fashioned album was slightly yellowed on the surface, seemingly quite old.
Being placed so openly in the tea room for guests, it shouldn’t be something very private.
It was probably the same as the photos on the wall, just a record of life.
Having learned a lesson from the incident with the soybean milk in the refrigerator.
Jian Yao thought for a moment before carefully taking the album off the shelf and finding a soft stool with the best lighting to sit down and browse.
She was right, it was indeed an album recording life, all the photos were arranged in chronological order.
From the photos of Old Lady Gu and Old Master Gu’s wedding, it continued to their children’s marriages and the birth of their grandchildren.
Each photo had a detailed record of the time, place, and event.
It was like flipping through an interesting real-life comic book.
Jian Yao put the book on her lap, flipping through the pages with one hand and supporting her chin with the other, watching with great interest.
Just as she reached the part about Gu Zhiyan, a hand suddenly reached out from behind and covered her hand that was about to turn the page.
A large shadow fell down, the familiar refreshing scent instantly enveloped Jian Yao.
Jian Yao looked up in confusion, meeting the man’s sharp-edged profile, only a few centimeters away from her face, so close that she could almost hear his breathing and feel the temperature of his breath.
The man’s voice was soft, his usual nonchalant tone tinged with a hint of tension, his warm breath mixed with the refreshing scent, like a small feather swirling into Jian Yao’s ear, making it itchy.
“Don’t look!”
