Chapter 50: You Look Like a Former Friend
The Wei family’s residence was located in the eastern outskirts of the county, nestled against the mountains and near the water. The area was spacious and quiet, far from the hustle and bustle of the town, making it an ideal place for rest and recuperation.
After the carriage arrived, the little book boy invited Ye Xin Ran to get off. As she stepped down, she saw that the house was tastefully decorated.
The courtyard, with its three gates and three courtyards, was open and spacious. Plum trees were planted, goldfish swam in a pond, and delicate bamboo swayed in the corridor.
The book boy led her to the back courtyard, where a round-faced maid immediately greeted them.
“Is this the famous healer that the master spoke of?”
The young maid looked at Ye Xin Ran in disbelief.
At that moment, Wei Jing Zhi also emerged from the house. “Madam Ye, you have arrived. Please come in.”
Ye Xin Ran entered the inner room, carrying her bamboo basket, and immediately noticed how clean and neat the room was.
The windows of the front and back rooms were open, allowing fresh air to circulate, and a faint scent of oranges filled the air. The atmosphere was nothing like the stifling, oppressive air often found in rooms where people have been bedridden for a long time.
Seeing Ye Xin Ran’s surprise, Wei Jing Zhi explained, “My wife has always preferred bright spaces, so we don’t hang curtains in the house. Though doctors advise against wind exposure, she must have some airflow each day to help her relax and rest.”
Ye Xin Ran, hearing his explanation, responded in a tone that mixed both helplessness and affection. “This is a good approach. It aids in the patient’s recovery.”
Following Wei Jing Zhi’s lead, Ye Xin Ran walked into the inner room and saw the patient lying on the bed.
“This is my wife, Lady Leng,” Wei Jing Zhi introduced.
Hearing the movement, Lady Leng spoke up, “Is the doctor here?”
“Yes,” Wei Jing Zhi replied, leading Ye Xin Ran to the bedside.
Only then did Ye Xin Ran get a good look at Lady Leng’s appearance.
Lady Leng had dark, beautiful brows and eyes, making her quite striking. However, these features only served to accentuate her pale, yellowish complexion and the whiteness of her lips.
Upon seeing Ye Xin Ran, a hint of surprise flashed in Lady Leng’s eyes, but she quickly masked it and extended her hand for Ye Xin Ran to examine.
She spoke as she did: “I didn’t expect such a young female doctor. I’ve been ill for so long that if you don’t have a good solution, don’t feel too burdened.”
Ye Xin Ran was taken aback. Before she had even started her examination, the patient was already trying to comfort her.
From this, it was clear that Lady Leng was a kind-hearted person. But after being sick for so long, she had lost all hope for recovery.
“You don’t need to be too pessimistic,” Ye Xin Ran said as she checked her pulse. “Madam, you are suffering from excessive bleeding and uterine prolapse, but it’s not difficult to treat.”
As she spoke, she lifted her hand, reaching into her basket, and when she pulled it out, she was holding a packet of silver needles.
Ye Xin Ran adjusted the silver needles and said, “If Madam trusts me, I will first use the silver needles to stop the bleeding, and then I’ll prescribe some medicine for you to take. Once your body recovers, I will help address the prolapse.”
Lady Leng looked up, a trace of surprise in her eyes.
She had seen many doctors, some of whom correctly identified her condition, but none had ever said it was a small issue.
Especially with the prolapsed organ, even the most experienced doctors were powerless. Yet, for this young woman, it seemed like a simple matter.
“Can you really cure it?” Seeing Ye Xin Ran expertly handle the silver needles, Lady Leng couldn’t help but feel a glimmer of hope.
“Yes!” Ye Xin Ran nodded with confidence, her expression reassuring.
“That’s wonderful!” Lady Leng couldn’t explain why, but her eyes suddenly felt a bit warm.
Over the years, Lady Leng had been disappointed too many times.
Again and again, she would be filled with hope, only to be let down once more. She thought she had stopped expecting anything from life.
However, when she saw Ye Xin Ran, she suddenly felt that perhaps there was still a chance.
Wei Jing Zhi, who had been watching the entire time, was also quite moved.
He had known it all along, this young girl didn’t follow conventional methods. She was different from the doctors he had previously encountered, and he was sure she had a way to heal his wife.
“Please, everyone, step outside. I will treat my wife now, and after I’m done, others can come in,” Ye Xin Ran said.
Hearing her words, Wei Jing Zhi quickly gestured to the maid, signaling her to leave immediately.
The maid hurriedly exited, and at that moment, Ye Xin Ran turned to Wei Jing Zhi. “Why haven’t you left yet?”
Wei Jing Zhi hesitated. “…Can’t I stay here?”
Ye Xin Ran replied, “I have a habit of not allowing anyone nearby when I’m performing acupuncture.”
Reluctantly, Wei Jing Zhi stepped out of the room.
Ye Xin Ran set up her silver needles and instructed Lady Leng to remove her clothing. She located the thirty-six acupuncture points on her back and quickly inserted the needles.
The silver needles, with their fine tips, made a crisp, clear sound as Ye Xin Ran expertly manipulated them. Each time she finished a point, she gently stroked the needle, and it sang through the air.
Lady Leng had never heard such a sound before. For a moment, she found it fascinating. “This technique of yours is extraordinary. I’m guessing you’ve been guided by a master.”
Ye Xin Ran responded with a soft “Hmm,” then added, “But my master disappeared years ago, and I haven’t heard from him since.”
Lady Leng quickly apologized, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know…”
“It’s fine,” Ye Xin Ran reassured her. “If you’re tired, feel free to rest.”
For some reason, after hearing Ye Xin Ran’s words, Lady Leng suddenly felt sleepy and soon drifted off into a deep sleep.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Ye Xin Ran took out some specialized medicine for gynecological treatment from her space. She unwrapped the packaging, grabbed a piece of Xuan paper from the desk, and wrapped it up.
Since it was traditional Chinese medicine, it didn’t seem out of place.
Next, she removed the silver needles and waited for Lady Leng to wake up.
Typically, this acupuncture could make a person sleep for about a quarter of an hour, but nearly half an hour had passed, and Lady Leng still hadn’t woken up.
Bored, Ye Xin Ran remembered that she still had two buns left, which she intended to bring back with her. She decided to eat one right there.
Just after taking a few bites, Lady Leng finally woke up.
Embarrassed, she smiled at Ye Xin Ran. “I’m so sorry. I actually fell asleep just now.”
“It’s no trouble at all. I made you sleep,” Ye Xin Ran said nonchalantly.
Although Lady Leng had only slept for a short time, she felt much more refreshed.
She put on her clothes and noticed that Ye Xin Ran had finished the last bite of her bun. She unexpectedly asked, “Did you make these buns yourself? They smell delicious.”
Ye Xin Ran kindly picked up the last bun from her basket and handed it to Lady Leng. “I made them myself. Here, take it.”
Lady Leng took the bun, her gaze lingering on Ye Xin Ran as she studied her more closely. For some reason, she suddenly felt that this young woman looked familiar.
“Excuse me, miss, have we met somewhere before?”
Ye Xin Ran shook her head. “No, I rarely go out.”
“Really? Then perhaps I’m mistaken.”
Lady Leng gazed at her, still feeling that the young woman’s features seemed oddly familiar, and sighed in disappointment.
