Chapter 51: The Rough Villager Woman
Upon hearing voices from the inner room, Wei Jing Zhi and the maid immediately opened the door and entered.
“Hubby!” Lady Leng smiled and waved at Wei Jing Zhi.
Seeing his wife’s smile, Wei Jing Zhi quickly walked over, taking her hand. “Wife, I haven’t seen you smile like that in so long.”
“I only slept for a little while, but I feel much better now.”
“That’s really great!”
As the couple exchanged tender words, it felt like they hadn’t seen each other in ages, even though it had only been a short time. Ye Xin Ran decided she would no longer be a third wheel.
“This is the medicine I’ve prescribed for the lady. Take two pills twice a day for half a month, and after that, I’ll come back for a follow-up check-up.”
Ye Xin Ran instructed, “During this time, avoid exertion, don’t catch a cold, and keep a cheerful mood, as it helps with recovery.”
“Yes, yes!” Wei Jing Zhi hurriedly agreed.
Turning back to speak more with his wife, he saw that she had handed a bun to the maid, instructing her to warm it up and bring it to her.
“This bun is?” Wei Jing Zhi asked, his face filled with surprise.
“It’s the doctor’s lunch,” Lady Leng said apologetically. “I mentioned it smelled nice, so Dr. Ye gave it to me. Dr. Ye, would you like to have a simple meal at our humble home for lunch?”
“No, I just had one bun and am already full,” Ye Xin Ran declined.
She wasn’t accustomed to eating with people she wasn’t familiar with.
Seeing that she wouldn’t stay, Wei Jing Zhi saw her off.
Just as they reached the door, Wei Jing Zhi spoke, “If you have time, Lady Ye, would you consider coming to see my wife more often? I think she quite likes you.”
Seeing the concern in his eyes, Ye Xin Ran felt happy for his wife.
People often say scholars are aloof, but who would have thought that someone as well-known as Wei Jing Zhi would place his wife so high in his heart.
She gently reassured him, “Lady Leng’s condition is not severe, so there’s no need for frequent visits. Once every half month is enough.”
“Alright!”
Wei Jing Zhi instructed the young servant to take Ye Xin Ran back to the village. Before she left, he also gave her a reward of 50 taels of silver.
“This is my small token of appreciation. If my wife recovers, I will surely reward you generously,” he said.
Ye Xin Ran didn’t refuse.
Though they had agreed that her treatment would be exchanged for the children’s education in the village, there was no stipulation that she wouldn’t accept a consultation fee.
She took the silver, thanked him, and followed the young servant out the gate. Just as she was about to get on the carriage, the young servant suddenly said he had forgotten something and ran back to get it.
Ye Xin Ran stood in front of the carriage, waiting for him to return.
She looked around and noticed that although it was already past noon, there were five carriages parked outside the Wei residence.
These carriages were quite extravagant, with the largest one adorned with intricate carvings and the finest fabric used for the decorations.
Servants stood beside each carriage, all staring eagerly at the Wei residence’s entrance.
As Ye Xin Ran observed them, she suddenly heard someone calling her name.
“Xin Ran! Xin Ran!”
Confused, Ye Xin Ran looked towards the carriage where a woman was waving at her.
She scrutinized the woman for a moment, then recognized her as the person who had called her, it was her birth mother, Mrs. Zou.
In the meantime, Mrs. Zou had already approached Ye Xin Ran.
Surprised to see Ye Xin Ran here, Mrs. Zou asked, “How did you end up here?”
She eyed Ye Xin Ran curiously and craned her neck to look inside, making sure no one else was coming out of the yard before turning her attention back to Ye Xin Ran.
“I came to handle some business,” Ye Xin Ran answered lazily.
“You can handle business here?”
After asking, Zou Shi’s eyes suddenly lit up. “Could it be that you know Wei Jing Zhi?
A Ran, if you know Director Wei, you must help your younger brother! Recommend Sheng Er to Director Wei, and have him take Sheng Er as a disciple.
Your brother is so smart, he needs a good teacher to guide him.”
Ye Xin Ran sneered, “Mother, are you thinking too highly of your daughter? Have you forgotten that I’m just a hunter’s wife? The Wei family and I agreed on a deal for game, I’m here to deliver it.”
Upon hearing that Ye Xin Ran was only delivering goods, Zou Shi’s excitement immediately vanished, and she released Ye Xin Ran’s hand.
“Hmph! I knew it. What can a useless person like you accomplish? How could you possibly associate with someone like Wei Jing Zhi’s family?”
“Yeah, I’m just a good for nothing. Lady Ye, you’d better stay away from me,” Ye Xin Ran replied coldly.
Zou Shi snapped, “Stop speaking to me with that sarcastic tone!
You’ve always been useless, haven’t I been right? You’re not as pretty as your younger sister, nor as clever as your younger brother. You’re not worthy of being my daughter!”
Ye Xin Ran said nothing, merely looking at Zou Shi with a cold smile.
If it were the original Ye Xin Ran, she would have been heartbroken to hear such words.
Even though they were both children of the same parents, one was cherished, and the other was neglected.
But unfortunately for Zou Shi, Ye Xin Ran wasn’t her daughter, so she felt no sadness. Instead, she found Zou Shi’s attitude utterly repulsive.
Zou Shi seemed to be provoked by her cold demeanor and spat viciously, “Don’t come to deliver goods to the Wei family again. You might make some mistake and cause trouble for the Wei family, making Director Wei dissatisfied with the Ye family.”
“My own family’s matters have nothing to do with you,” Ye Xin Ran said indifferently. “My family still needs to eat. Whether I deliver the goods or not is not for you to decide.”
“Who says it has nothing to do with me!” Zou Shi raised her voice, “This concerns Sheng Er’s future. I can’t afford to be careless unless you sever ties with our Ye family.”
Ye Xin Ran turned back. “Didn’t I sever ties the day I got married?”
Zou Shi put her hands on her hips. “Fine, fine. In the future, when you’re out and about, don’t claim to be the Ye family’s daughter!”
Ye Xin Ran couldn’t be bothered to respond. She turned to get into the carriage but saw the servant boy coming out of the yard.
The servant boy was in a hurry, and several people immediately gathered around him. “Manager Tong, what did Mr. Wei say? Will he have time this afternoon?”
“I’ve been waiting here for three days. Will Mr. Wei grant us an audience?”
“I was here first, and I’ve already been waiting for five days!”
The servant boy waved his hand impatiently. “I’ve told you all countless times, my master won’t see anyone. You were making noise outside just now, which is a big taboo to my master. Don’t come again! Don’t disturb my lady’s rest!”
“It wasn’t us making the noise, it was her!”
“Yes, it was her!”
Several people who had been unfairly blamed pointed at Zou Shi.
Zou Shi’s face immediately turned dark.
“No, no, it wasn’t me. I didn’t make any noise.”
“It was clearly you!”
“Yes, we all saw it with our own eyes!”
“It really wasn’t me, it was her!”
Seeing Ye Xin Ran standing across from her, Zou Shi seemed to finally find someone to vent her anger on. “She was the one talking loudly in front of Director Wei’s door.
I was just helping Manager Tong teach this uncouth, rough village woman some manners!”
