Chapter 48
Shen Chutang’s fever had completely subsided by the afternoon. Xie Tong called and said she would go back and prepare tonight and come back tomorrow.
For dinner, Shi Chengyu personally cooked tomato and beef soup. The tomatoes were peeled and cooked until soft. Usually, the beef was sliced, but today it was diced.
“Tangtang, eat another bite, slowly.”
Shen Chutang was weak and tired from eating. She chewed slowly, and Shi Chengyu waited for her to finish before feeding her the next bite.
“Did you like the ceramic tableware I gave you last time? Finish this bowl, and I’ll make you two more sets, okay?”
The last set was made by Shi Chengyu, but the spoon was accidentally broken by the maid, and she was sad for a long time.
Shen Chutang wanted it, but she was already a little full. Besides, the last set was a gift, why were there conditions now?
She looked at Shi Chengyu with resentful eyes, “No.”
“Then five sets?” Shi Chengyu smiled and negotiated with her, “How about two cups as well?”
“Or…I’ll make you a silly little toy?”
Shen Chutang was tempted. She blinked, “Two.”
“Okay.”
Shi Chengyu agreed quickly, as if afraid she would change her mind.
Lin Shulang was waiting outside the door. He once again realized the importance of Shen Chutang to Shi Chengyu. He had accompanied Shi Chengyu to countless negotiations and had never lost. There were few who couldn’t agree on a price or who simply refused to cooperate.
Only with Shen Chutang would Shi Chengyu negotiate without any bottom line, regardless of the cost, just to get her to agree. Even though he didn’t gain much, he was happier than if he had closed a deal worth hundreds of millions.
Shen Chutang didn’t finish the meal in the end. She acted spoiled in his arms. Shi Chengyu held her hand and rubbed her head, “Why are you being so spoiled, huh?”
Shen Chutang buried her face in his chest, “No.”
“Okay.” Shi Chengyu smiled, “I’m being spoiled.”
Shen Chutang raised her head, “It’s you, you’re being spoiled.”
“You said yesterday that you would tell me.”
Shi Chengyu’s hand, which was combing her hair, paused. He looked at the time, “Okay.”
He was nervous, his hand patting Shen Chutang’s back, even trembling slightly.
Shen Chutang listened quietly. Although her thinking was a bit slow, she seemed to understand.
After the photos of her trip to Switzerland were exposed, someone was digging into her identity, and Shi Chengyu was also being watched. At that time, Zhang Yueting appeared, and Shi Chengyu naturally let her attract attention. He signed a contract with her in the name of a company under the Shi Group, making her a shield.
“Then why didn’t you tell me at the time?”
Shi Chengyu’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He looked down at her, like a prisoner awaiting judgment.
No matter how you looked at it, this was a villainous act. He wasn’t a good person, he just acted gentle and kind in front of Shen Chutang. He was afraid of her knowing, he didn’t dare, but if this could protect her, he would still do it without hesitation.
“You were afraid that I would hate you if I knew, weren’t you?”
Shi Chengyu didn’t deny it. He nodded.
Shen Chutang’s lips drooped, her voice still a little hoarse, her speech slow, “You hid it from me, I’m not happy, but you think I’ll hate you if I know, and that makes me even more unhappy.”
“Because you don’t trust me, you don’t trust my feelings for you.”
This was supposed to be about protecting her. Besides, first, Zhang Yueting took the initiative to step into this muddy water to gain attention, and second, Shi Chengyu didn’t force her. Shen Chutang had no reason to hate him.
Shi Chengyu’s heart felt like it was being pricked by something, a sour and numb feeling, “Tangtang, I’m sorry.”
Shi Chengyu held her hand and didn’t dare to move. He had to admit that sometimes, he wasn’t as good as Shen Chutang when it came to love.
Shen Chutang held his hand back, “Brother Chengyu, give me time to grow up, and I’ll give you time too.”
“I like you for everything you are.”
Both his gentleness towards her and his coldness in public.
“So you don’t have to be afraid of me knowing, and you don’t have to be afraid that I’ll dislike you because of that.”
Shi Chengyu was stunned for a moment, then hugged her, “Tangtang.” His throat choked, unable to speak. He just held her.
He should have known that his Tangtang was so good, how could she be prejudiced against him?
“Tangtang, it’s so good to have you.”
“Rebound.” Shen Chutang slowly uttered two words, and then they both laughed.
*
Shen Chutang was sick for almost half a month before she gradually recovered. She could eat and get out of bed.
It wasn’t a good idea to stay in bed all the time. The sun was good in the afternoon, so Shi Chengyu took her to the fish pond behind the house to watch the fish.
The carp in the pond were no smaller than those at Ya Xuan. They were all chubby.
There was a bench by the pond. It wasn’t winter yet, but Shen Chutang was already wearing a fleece jacket. The IV needle in her hand had been removed, but it was still a bit bruised.
She held fish food in her hand, scattering it into the pond bit by bit, watching them swim over to grab it, their tails splashing the water.
“The little fish in the pond are growing faster than you.”
These fish were only sent here less than a year ago. When they first arrived, they were only the size of a palm. Now they were already the length of an arm, and they were all chubby. Shen Chutang, on the other hand, hadn’t gained much weight in a year. She had even lost some.
Shen Chutang gave him a playful glare, “Chubby little fish are cute.”
Shi Chengyu chuckled softly, then heard her ask, “Will the carp get too full if they eat too much? They seem like they can barely swim.”
“No, they won’t.”
If they really did, he would just have someone send new ones over.
“Mr. Shi.” Lin Shulang really didn’t want to break this atmosphere, but it was urgent, so he had to step forward and interrupt.
“What’s wrong?” Shi Chengyu didn’t look up. He was focused on Shen Chutang’s hand.
Lin Shulang hesitated, “This…”
“Just say it.”
“Mr. Shi, Zhang Yueting has been kidnapped.”
Shen Chutang instantly looked up. Shi Chengyu touched her head, “It’s okay.”
“The kidnappers called and said they want five million.”
Lin Shulang seemed to be narrating, but he was actually asking. Was there any need to keep this pawn?
“Report it to the police.”
“Yes.”
The wind picked up. Shi Chengyu put the hat on Shen Chutang’s head, “Good girl, let’s go home today. We’ll come back tomorrow.”
Shen Chutang nodded, but stopped as she passed Lin Shulang, “Is she okay?”
“She’s fine for now. The kidnappers said they only want the money.”
Shen Chutang nodded softly, holding Shi Chengyu’s hand and walking forward, “Brother Chengyu, did you give her the money?”
“Yes, I gave her one million when we signed the contract.”
“Tangtang, don’t think about it. Someone will take care of it.” Shi Chengyu held her hand, wanting to squeeze it tightly but afraid of hurting her. Thankfully, thankfully Shen Chutang had been at home these past few days, and thankfully he had made preparations in advance.
When he came back from Switzerland, he knew he was being watched. There were so many people in Beijing watching him, watching the Shi Group. At this time, someone actually thought that getting the title of Shi Chengyu’s girlfriend was a good thing.
“Tangtang, don’t go out these next two days. We’ll go out later.”
Shi Chengyu said in a low voice, leading her into the house. The security at Lanjiangting was strict. Ordinary people couldn’t get in, and the delivery men and couriers were all sent in by the security guards.
“I understand. Brother Chengyu, be careful too.”
“Okay.”
