Chapter 12
Lin Si lowered his eyelids. “Can we not talk about this…”
“Do you know how many injections a person can endure in a single day at most?” Li Jicheng fixed his gaze on Lu Wei.
Liao Ji coughed heavily, trying to stop him.
“As Lin Si’s attending physician, I once encountered you, President Lu, in the hospital. Whether it was you, the young Mr. Lu, or your father, the elder Mr. Lu…” Li Jicheng closed the medical examination report and slightly tilted his chin downward. His narrow eyes locked on Lu Wei. “Your father invited a cutting-edge research team to establish Xiaoshan Hospital. The highest record for injections there was thirty-seven times in a single day, sustained for three consecutive days. Mr. Lu, if one tries harder, do you think it’s possible to endure a hundred injections in three days?”
“Jicheng!” Liao Ji sternly reprimanded him. He got up and held Lin Si, who was trembling slightly in his arms. Feeling Lin Si’s faint quivers against his chest, he glared at Li Jicheng. “What are you doing?!”
The medical report in Li Jicheng’s hand had already been crumpled in half. He took a heavy breath and said, “I’m sorry.”
His apology was directed at Lin Si, not Lu Wei.
Lu Wei remained sitting upright. He neither defended Lu Shaoming nor showed any anger at Li Jicheng’s remarks. The only visible change in his expression was a brief glance at Lin Si, who was nestled in Liao Ji’s arms.
The room was oppressively silent. The most noticeable sound was the faint rustling of Lin Si clutching Liao Ji’s clothes.
Li Jicheng paused for a moment, reluctantly swallowing his frustration before speaking again in a businesslike tone. He addressed Lu Wei coldly, “President Lu, you won’t experience side effects from taking inhibitors because your dosage is within the normal range.”
Liao Ji shot Li Jicheng a look, trying to steer the conversation elsewhere. “Besides nausea, are there any other side effects?”
Li Jicheng hesitated for a moment before continuing, “The initial side effects manifest as nausea and dry heaving triggered by specific pheromones. As the condition worsens, these reactions can occur unpredictably, just like Lin Si’s current state,” his brow furrowed tightly. “In the worst-case scenario—”
Lin Si gripped Liao Ji’s sleeve, anxiously looking to Li Jicheng for reassurance.
“What happens then?”
“You’ll enter a heat state,” Li Jicheng said. “Since your gland differentiation, you’ve never experienced a heat period. If you suddenly enter heat without the presence of an Alpha, your body will be pushed to its limits, leading to exhaustion, shock, or even sudden death. Even with an Alpha accompanying you, excessive physiological demands might cause varying degrees of soft tissue damage.”
Lin Si’s voice trembled slightly. “Will I die?”
“That’s the worst-case scenario, the absolute worst,” Li Jicheng said. “The probability is very low.”
Lin Si relaxed slightly but soon asked again, “What kind of soft tissue damage happens during heat with an Alpha? What does ‘soft tissue damage’ mean?”
As a doctor, Li Jicheng wasn’t one to shy away from such topics, but for some reason, he didn’t want to explain this in front of Lu Wei or let Lu Wei see Lin Si’s complete lack of understanding.
On Lin Si’s medical instructions, there had always been a note: Delay the heat period until gland development is complete.
Because of this, Liao Ji had done everything over the years to shield Lin Si from learning or encountering anything related to these physiological processes, taking care of him like a child who understood nothing.
Even if Lin Si did know something, it was fragmented and often full of misconceptions.
Finally, with visible reluctance, Li Jicheng answered Lin Si’s question. “It just means your butt will hurt.”
“Where will my butt hurt?” Lin Si asked again, his eyes filled with a genuine thirst for knowledge.
“…Everywhere,” Li Jicheng replied, cutting off further questions. “It will hurt a lot, worse than when you fell off the lift two years ago—a hundred times worse.”
His exaggeration was so over the top that even Lu Wei glanced up at him.
But Lin Si, gullible as ever, seemed entirely taken in. His expression turned complicated as if caught in an inner struggle. After a moment of deliberation, he spoke hesitantly, “I think… butt pain is slightly better than dying. But honestly, I don’t want either. If my butt hurts, I might not be able to stand or walk anymore. I’d have to lie in bed every day. But if I die… I won’t even be able to eat.”
Liao Ji laughed softly and gently squeezed the back of Lin Si’s neck to comfort him. “It’s okay. The doctor has a solution.”
“What’s the solution?” Lin Si asked, looking hopeful.
Li Jicheng said, “The best treatment plan is to gradually stop administering inhibitors starting now. Then, find an Alpha from the gene bank with a compatibility rate of over 98% to accompany you through a natural heat. Based on your gland development, the heat period shouldn’t come too early. But the Alpha can stay with you in the meantime and proceed with normal bonding when the time is right.”
“Huh?” Lin Si’s heart skipped a beat. “Find an Alpha?”
He couldn’t help but recall a news article he’d seen online—
In a certain city, an Alpha had caused a sensation in the “Wealthy Omega Group” by proclaiming, “Ladies, I’m done working hard!” The declaration quickly won over countless admirers.
The article went on with a somewhat crude metaphor: A long-parched chrysanthemum finally finding sweet dew—but who knows how many holes one spear can fill?
Though Lin Si didn’t fully understand the latter part, he worried deeply. What if the Alpha ended up being like the one in the report and only wanted his money?
After all, that was his retirement fund—he couldn’t just waste it!
At that moment, Lu Wei’s calm, cold voice interrupted, “Not suitable.”
Lin Si tilted his head to look at Lu Wei, puzzled as to why he seemed so opposed.
If it were Lu Shaoming, he would likely weigh the pros and cons at a leisurely pace, pick the most beneficial option, and then pay off the Alpha with a hefty sum for their silence.
To capitalists like Lu Shaoming, no matter how famous a celebrity was, they were merely commodities. As long as they made money and returned value, anything was possible. Arranging for an Omega to bond with an Alpha during their heat sounded trivial.
But for some reason, when Lu Wei dismissed the idea so bluntly, Lin Si felt a bit relieved.
He’d seen an Omega in heat once in the lounge…
If a stranger were to witness him writhing and struggling like a small bug twisted by the desert heat, how embarrassing would that be?
Better not.
Even if he and that Alpha were perfectly compatible and naturally matched, it didn’t mean they had to become partners.
Li Jicheng offered a compromise, presenting Plan B: “Alternatively, you could live with the Alpha. This would help balance the glandular hormones in your body. Combined with low-dose inhibitors, it would alleviate the severe side effects for now.” He emphasized, “But this would only be a temporary fix. In the end, you’ll still need to go through your heat with an Alpha.”
Lin Si looked at Liao Ji, still unsatisfied with the plan.
Turning his head, he muttered, “I don’t want to live together.”
As his gaze swept past Lu Wei, he noticed Lu Wei was deep in thought, as if grappling with some monumental decision. His furrowed brow suggested an intense internal conflict.
Before Lin Si could voice his rejection again, Lu Wei spoke: “Let’s do that.”
His tone was decisive, as though he were the protagonist of this situation.
Lin Si felt like he was being led by the nose. “Why are you making decisions for me? It’s me living with someone else, not you!”
Lu Wei glanced at him but said nothing.
“If you refuse to live together, then you’d have to come to the hospital regularly for Alpha pheromone therapy sessions,” Li Jicheng explained. “This would involve breathing in Alpha pheromones for immersion therapy. However, it’s quite inconvenient and would still require identifying a compatible Alpha. What do you think?”
“He can’t even leave work on time, let alone commit to something like this,” Liao Ji interjected, shaking his head. “He barely gets six hours of sleep. Traveling to and from the hospital isn’t feasible, and if the media caught wind of it, it would be quite odd.”
Lin Si asked, “Is there no other option?”
Li Jicheng shook his head. “You’re growing taller, and your reproductive organs are developing simultaneously. It’s difficult to defy the natural laws of growth.”
Lin Si didn’t want to die suddenly—not before buying the perfect retirement villa for himself. He wasn’t ready to leave this world so abruptly.
Allowing an unfamiliar Alpha to move into his home didn’t necessarily mean they had to share a room. They could set clear boundaries and try to avoid interfering with each other.
As long as the Alpha’s pheromones lingered in the air, it would suffice.
“Alright, then,” Lin Si finally conceded, forcing a weak smile to encourage himself. “It sounds like that Alpha is just a tool for me to absorb yang energy.”
As Lin Si said this, he caught a glimpse of Lu Wei subtly pressing his lips together.
“To put it simply, yes, that’s one way to look at it,” Li Jicheng replied with a chuckle. “I’ll contact the gene bank to start searching for a match. However—it might require President Lu to make a call to the hospital director, and even then, the Alpha in question might not agree. You’ll need to be patient for a while.”
“There’s no need to search,” Lu Wei said as he stood up. His voice was stiff and awkward. “The Alpha with the highest compatibility with him is me.”
