His husband’s eyes were red, and his almond-shaped eyes looked wet as he stared at him with worry and panic. The afterglow cast a layer of light warm glow on his body, making him look pitiful.
Yu Jinhuai stared at Meng Yunshu in a trance until Meng Yunshu placed the medicine bowl in front of him. He smelled the strong smell of medicine, and the bitter smell stimulated his nose.
He looked up and bumped into Meng Yunshu’s eyes full of worry. Yu Jinhuai couldn’t help but feel warm in his heart.
This feeling of being cared for is different from the care of his parents and relatives, and also different from the care of his neighbors and friends. It is a new experience, which makes him feel different.
Yu Jinhuai picked up the medicine bowl and drank it in one gulp without saying a word. Just after he put down the medicine bowl, a calloused palm appeared in front of him, and on it was something he had never seen before, a red candy wrapped in a transparent wrapping paper.
“Take one slowly.” He heard Meng Yunshu say so.
This sentence made him think of when Meng Yunshu first came to the Yu family. Every time he finished drinking the medicine, he would always give him a spoonful of honey to let him suppress the taste of the medicine in his mouth. Now his husband uses this method on him.
Yu Jinhuai felt warm in his heart. Even if he didn’t like sweetness, he didn’t want to disappoint Meng Yunshu’s kindness.
Seeing the candy, Yu Zhining, who was lying on the side, curiously came up, poked it with his fingertips, and asked: “Uncle, what is this?”
Hearing his voice, Meng Yunshu suddenly came to his senses. He actually forgot that Yu Zhining was beside him and took out the candy so carelessly.
“This, this is…” Meng Yunshu didn’t know how to explain for a while, and he opened his mouth for a long time but couldn’t say anything.
It was Yu Jinhuai who spoke to ease his embarrassment.
“This is a pill given by little uncle’s friend.”
When he heard that it was medicine, Yu Zhining lost interest instantly. He yawned sleepily. Seeing this, Meng Yunshu hurriedly put the candy in his hand in Yu Jinhuai’s hand. Then he put aside the medicine bowl, and helped Yu Zhining take off his clothes so that he could sleep first.
The child couldn’t bear it. Yu Zhining fell asleep in bed not long after lying down. The little snoring was loud. This was the first time Meng Yunshu heard Yu Zhining snoring, which showed that he was really tired today.
After giving Yu Jinhuai a simple cleanup, the two fell asleep.
Yu Jinhuai had been in the mountains for almost a whole day today, fighting wits and courage with wild boars, and was injured again. After a while, he also snored like his little nephew. The two seemed to be singing in unison, making Meng Yunshu, who was sleeping in the middle, laugh and cry.
The next morning, Meng Yunshu, who had something on his mind, was the first person to get up in the family.
Today’s weather was good, there was no wind, and it was not very cold in the morning.
Since it was cold, the two dogs slept in the main room. The Yu family has always been good to the two wolf dogs. In addition to straw, the sacks under their bodies also contained cotton clothes that Yu Jinhuai could not wear anymore. Although the cotton inside was not very warm, it was the best for the two wolf dogs.
It was soft to lie on it in winter. When the weather was good, the family didn’t need to do anything. They would hold their own sacks in the yard to dry in the sun.
As a result, it was even warmer at night.
Auntie Sun had seen them once before and said that Daqing and Dahei were more diligent than Liu Ergou in the village.
He came out of the bedroom. The two dogs at home were familiar with him. When they saw him, they moved their heads and wagged their tails.
After walking out of the hall, Meng Yunshu had no time to wash up. He first fed the chickens and horses at home. Dahei, who was following behind him, saw the bran in the chicken trough, sniffed it a few times, and then hummed at him for food.
The warm sun shone on his body, making Meng Yunshu squint his eyes comfortably.
——
When Yu Jinhuai woke up, he heard the voices of Meng Yunshu and the two dogs outside, and then he realized that it was already late. He looked at the kang, and he was the latest to get up today. Even Ah Ning, who always liked to stay in bed, had already gotten up.
The curtains in the bedroom were still hanging. Yu Jinhuai propped himself up, raised his hand to open it, and tied the curtains. The sunlight filled the whole bedroom in an instant, and the room suddenly became bright.
There was a voice outside the door. He turned around and saw Meng Yunshu coming in with a basin of water. His cloth towel was placed on the edge of the basin. Yu Zhining, who was following him, also held a toothbrush dipped in green salt in his hand.
Seeing him, Yu Zhining smiled, “Uncle.”
Meng Yunshu looked at him. His eyes moved over his feet, and asked, “Do you need my help?”
Yu Jinhuai shook his head, indicating that he didn’t need it. He just sprained his foot, but he was not unable to move.
He lifted the quilt, moved to sit on the kang, and washed his face with the basin brought by Meng Yunshu. He caught a glimpse of Yu Zhining looking at him eagerly. Yu Jinhuai couldn’t help but feel happy and took the toothbrush and bamboo cup to brush his teeth.
After he finished washing, the big and small left with their things.
When he reached the door, Meng Yunshu turned around and suggested, “The sun is good today. Do you want to sit in the yard to bask in the sun?”
Yu Jinhuai thought about it, met Meng Yunshu’s expectant eyes, and nodded slightly.
There were no crutches at home. Meng Yunshu, who got the promise, left two words “wait for me” and left in a hurry.
Yu Jinhuai on the kang put on his shoes with his right foot. His left foot became swollen because of the sprain, so it was difficult to put on the shoe. He could only put them on a little. He sat on the edge of the kang, supporting his side with both hands, quietly waiting for his husband.
On the other side, Meng Yunshu came out of the bedroom and planned to eat today’s lunch in the yard, so he moved the small table in the kitchen out. The table was made of solid wood, and he couldn’t move it for a while. It took a lot of effort to move it to the yard.
Yu Zhining was busy moving a small stool. The two wolfhounds had already eaten breakfast and were now lazily lying under the eaves basking in the sun.
Considering Yu Jinhuai’s health, Meng Yunshu made a rich breakfast. He went to the system before Yu Zhining got up. The corn he planted was already ripe, so he took a few and cooked them, and made mixed grain porridge, fried a plate of winter bamboo shoots, and of course, a bowl of milk powder.
The small table was full of steaming food. The aroma attracted the well-fed Daqing and Dahei to run to the table and stand beside it. They started at it with envy. They had been trained since childhood and would not steal their owner’s food, so Meng Yunshu felt relieved and left only Yu Zhining, a child, to guard the table, and turned back to the bedroom.
Hearing footsteps, Yu Jinhuai looked up and saw his husband walking towards him. Noticing the sweat on his forehead, he asked, “Why are you sweating?”
Meng Yunshu heard the sound, raised his hand and wiped his sweat. He replied nonchalantly, “I moved the kitchen table.”
He said it lightly, but Yu Jinhuai knew how heavy the small table in the kitchen was. He frowned slightly and slowly clenched his hands hanging by his side, “Why don’t you let Xiao Yue help you?”
Meng Yunshu walked in front of him, stretched out his hand to put his arm on his neck, turned his head to look at him, “It’s just a few steps away, I can do it.”
Hearing the firmness in his tone, Yu Jinhuai didn’t say much. He thought about taking time to make a lighter table, so that if he was not at home, his husband would not need to be so laborious if he wanted to use the table in the yard. He didn’t have time to think too much, and his whole mind was focused on the person beside him.
He was surprised at Meng Yunshu’s movements. As he got closer, he could smell a faint fragrance on Meng Yunshu’s body that was different from that on a man. It was a fragrance that he couldn’t describe, and it attracted him deeply.
Looking at Meng Yunshu’s exposed neck, Yu Jinhuai’s eyes darkened, but the man realise it yet. He looked at him with innocent eyes, as if wondering why he didn’t move.
Suppressing his thoughts, Yu Jinhuai pretended to be calm and followed Meng Yunshu’s steps and moved forward slowly.
Yu Jinhuai was tall and strong. He went up the mountain to hunt all year round and was busy with farm work. His body was almost all muscle. He pressed on Meng Yunshu’s body, making him heavy and breathless. He walked a distance with difficulty to help him. The blue veins on his neck were exposed, which made Meng Yunshu look even smaller.
As the person involved, Yu Jinhuai naturally discovered it. He moved the gravity to his intact right foot to reduce the pressure on Meng Yunshu.
Suddenly, Meng Yunshu noticed and glanced at him. Seeing that he knew the seriousness of the matter, he stopped talking.
After finally walking into the yard, both of them were sweating, one was tired and the other was panicking.
Yu Zhining, who had been sitting on a stool and waiting impatiently for a long time, saw that the two had finally arrived, and pulled the stool open for them. After the two adults were ready, he couldn’t wait to say: “Eat, eat.”
Yu Jinhuai noticed the yellow corn on the table at first glance, and recalled the corn Meng Yunshu described to him, thinking that this must be corn.
“Okay, Ah Ning is hungry, let’s eat.”
After speaking, Meng Yunshu took a corn and handed it to Yu Jinhuai, and took another one for Yu Zhining. Finally it was his turn.
“Brother Huai, try it.”
“Mm.”
The corn kernels are sweet and soft, and have a light fragrance after biting them open. Meng Yunshu cooked five corns in total. He and Yu Zhining only ate one, Yu Jinhuai ate two, and there was one left to cook for lunch.
Although corn is not as filling as sweet potatoes, Yu Jinhuai is willing to grow it just because it is a crop.
Soon after lunch, the villagers came to the Yu family house to take a look when they heard about Yu Jinhuai’s injury.
Yu Zhining went to play with his Sun Ming after breakfast.
Now only Yu Jinhuai and Meng Yunshu were left in the yard. Thinking of the wild boar meat in the kitchen, Meng Yunshu asked, “What should we do with the wild boar meat?”
Yu Jinhuai thought for a while and said, “Give one pound each to the village chief, Doctor Ming and Xiao Yue’s family. We can keep a few pounds to make bacon and sell the rest to the villagers. Is that feasible?”
If it were taken to the town or county, it would definitely sell for a lot of money, but now that his foot was injured, it was inconvenient for him to go out, so selling it in the village was the best solution.
Meng Yunshu listened and nodded in agreement.
Since he had decided, he got up and went to find Yu Jinyue to let him inform the villagers. They were kind-hearted, but they never thought that something would happen because of the wild boar meat.
