Chapter 58
“Your brother-in-law’s comrades are coming over for dinner tonight.”
Tang Wan wasn’t stupid. The white flour was mixed with a little bit of coarse grain. Although the buns were meat-filled,
they were actually radish and pork. There was more radish than meat. It was just for the taste of meat.
“I’ll help you, Sister.”
Tang Zhou was even more eager to help. But Tang Wan had also steamed buns in the morning. She also boiled a few eggs.
Breakfast was on the table: buns and eggs. Tang Wan also made Tang Zhou a glass of milk.
She hadn’t bought the popular malt extract yet, so she used powdered milk from her space.
But she didn’t put it on display, afraid that people would see it and make a fuss.
“Sister, such precious things, you should drink them.”
Tang Zhou quickly refused. Such good things should be for his sister. He was a man. He didn’t need to drink such good things.
“Of course, I’ll drink it too. It helps you grow taller.”
Tang Wan frowned. “Don’t you want to join the army? The army has high requirements. They don’t want people who are too short.”
She wasn’t tall before she traveled through time. She was only 1.6 meters tall. The original owner was okay. She was about 1.65 meters tall. She wasn’t short among the girls in the neighborhood.
That was because her parents had raised her well. She wanted to drink more milk. It would be great if she could grow taller.
Otherwise, she would be too short compared to Lu Huaijing.
“Then I’ll drink it!”
Tang Zhou took the milk and gulped it down in one go. He probably didn’t even taste it.
Tang Wan was speechless. She didn’t say anything to him. After they finished breakfast, Tang Zhou volunteered.
“Sister, I went out yesterday and saw that there are wild vegetables and firewood at the foot of the mountain behind our family compound.”
“Okay, let’s go get some wild vegetables for a snack.”
Tang Wan carried the backpack from home, locked the door, and took Tang Zhou out of the family compound.
She originally wanted to call Zhang Hongyan, but she wasn’t home. She must have gone out to buy things again.
Along the way, they met many military wives. Most of them knew that she was Lu Huaijing’s wife. Many of them nodded slightly or greeted her.
As for how they discussed her behind her back, Tang Wan didn’t care at all. She was living her own life.
As they got closer, Tang Wan noticed that there were indeed many military wives at the foot of the mountain. The wild vegetables at the foot of the mountain were almost all gone.
They could only walk a little further inside. Tang Zhou muttered to himself.
“Yesterday, I saw a lot of wild vegetables. Why are there none today?”
Yesterday, he had thought that their home didn’t have firewood, so he had gathered some. Who knew that these people would be so quick?
“It’s okay. Let’s go to a less crowded place.”
Tang Wan didn’t like the way those military wives were looking at her. She took Tang Zhou further away.
Soon, she found a patch of wild vegetables. She bent down and began to pick them. Tang Zhou gathered firewood.
Suddenly… Tang Wan saw a wild pheasant flying past in the distance.
That’s right…
It was flying. Wild pheasants can fly.
It wasn’t flying very high. It was just flapping its wings.
“If Brother-in-law was here, he could definitely catch that pheasant.”
Tang Zhou’s eyes lit up. The little boy made a big decision in his heart.
He would become as strong as his brother-in-law!
Seeing the regret in his eyes, Tang Wan paused her picking of wild vegetables.
She remembered that Tang Zhou seemed to like playing with slingshots in the original owner’s memory. So Tang Wan’s consciousness began to search through the things in Tang Zhou’s room.
Sure enough, there was a slingshot. She pretended to take it out of her pocket.
“Zhouzhou, I remember you used to love playing with slingshots. So I brought it with me when I left home.
You can try to hit the pheasant with stones. It’s okay if you don’t hit it. Just practice your aim.”
“A slingshot?!”
This was Tang Zhou’s favorite toy. He was delighted to receive it.
“Sister really knows me!”
He eagerly bent down, picked up a stone, and flicked it towards the pheasant in the distance.
It scared the pheasant even further!
Although he didn’t hit anything, Tang Zhou jumped up in excitement.
Just as Tang Wan finished picking the wild vegetables in front of her, she said, “Let’s go. Let’s walk a little further inside.”
Tang Zhou was also very excited with his slingshot. He didn’t think too much about it. They had clearly strayed from the crowd.
Just as Tang Wan was picking wild vegetables with gusto, she suddenly heard Tang Zhou shout excitedly.
“Sister, I hit a rabbit!”
He was holding a rabbit that had been stunned by the stone. He ran over excitedly, his face beaming with genuine joy.
“Zhouzhou, you’re amazing!”
Tang Wan gave him a thumbs-up as he wished. Then she hid the rabbit in her small backpack and covered it with wild vegetables.
Seeing that Tang Zhou still looked unsatisfied, Tang Wan said helplessly, “We have to go back early to prepare the food.
Your brother-in-law has a lot of comrades. There are fifteen or twenty of them. I won’t have time to cook when they get here.”
“Then I’ll come again next time.”
Tang Zhou carried the firewood he had gathered and followed Tang Wan down the mountain, looking a little disappointed.
Tang Wan was afraid that he would be reckless and go hunting alone.
She nagged him all the way back to the compound.
From afar, Tang Wan saw Xu Heping and Qiu Dazhao. Xu Heping made a face at Tang Zhou.
Qiu Dazhao, on the other hand, was frowning and looking unhappy.
Tang Wan didn’t care what others thought. She took Tang Zhou home. They had a simple lunch.
In the afternoon, Lu Huaijing had someone deliver some food. He must have asked the cooks to buy it.
With these and the things she had brought back yesterday, Tang Wan had a rough menu in mind.
Scallion stir-fried eggs, radish and bone soup, potato stewed with wild rabbit, cabbage and vermicelli, braised large intestines, braised pork with eggplant, stir-fried wild vegetables.
She would also serve white flour meat buns. It would be a respectable feast.
Considering that Lu Huaijing’s superiors might know her identity, Tang Wan made sure that there were more vegetables than meat in each dish.
Large intestines were cheap anyway. It didn’t matter if there was more.
She spent the entire afternoon washing, chopping, and cooking. It was a whirlwind of activity, but fortunately, Tang Zhou helped her.
Lu Huaijing finished training at five thirty and came over from the training ground with his comrades. They would probably arrive around six o’clock.
So at five thirty, Tang Wan started stir-frying the dishes. Besides the meat buns, she also prepared some cornbread.
At exactly six o’clock, Tang Wan had just finished setting the table when she heard men talking outside.
She asked Tang Zhou to ladle out the bone soup and went out to greet them.
Lu Huaijing and a man with a dark face were standing in the middle. If she wasn’t mistaken, this was Director Xu.
Behind them were a group of comrades of different ages, all tall and strong. There were about twenty of them.
Lu Huaijing smiled and introduced them. “This is my wife, Tang Wan. Wife.”
“Hello, Sister-in-law!”
“Hello, Sister-in-law!”
The soldiers’ voices were loud, making Tang Wan’s face flush involuntarily. “Hello.”
“Wife, this is Director Xu.”
Lu Huaijing introduced the man beside him to Tang Wan. After all, he was his direct superior, so he had to introduce him specifically.
“Hello, Director Xu.”
Tang Wan was composed and confident. She didn’t show any sign of the conflict she had with his mother. Director Xu also smiled.
“My brothers have big appetites. Thank you for your hard work, Sister-in-law.”
Just as Tang Wan was about to speak, someone pushed aside the soldiers and came up to them.
It was Qiu Dazhao, who had had a run-in with Tang Wan before. She was holding her grandson’s hand and smiling with wrinkles all over her face.
“Dashu, how can you come out to eat without us?”
It was obvious that she had brought her grandson to mooch off of them.
