Chapter 93: My Mother Didn’t Even Get a Chance to Say It
The night was quiet. Hu Yao held Jiang Xiaochao, his small body nestled against hers, her chin resting on his head.
Sensing her low spirits, Jiang Xiaochao obediently stayed in her arms. His small hand gripped hers, unusually quiet and still.
Suddenly, a loud bang echoed. Jiang Han flung open the door and strode out in a hurry.
Another loud bang followed as the courtyard door was kicked open.
“Where is Daddy going?” Jiang Xiaochao asked curiously.
Hu Yao paused, her gaze shifting from the slightly swaying courtyard door to her son. She shook her head gently, “I don’t know.”
The swing was located in a secluded corner of the courtyard. When it was first built, wild flowers were planted around it, their vines winding up the swing. Even in winter, bright and vibrant blooms adorned the plants.
The mother and son had been so quiet that Jiang Han hadn’t even considered they might still be home. He went straight out, unaware that he was looking for them. It wasn’t unusual for him to leave at night.
After sitting for a while, the wind grew colder. Hu Yao tucked her drowsy son into her arms and carried him back to bed.
They both quickly fell asleep, unaware of Jiang Han’s increasingly grim face as he searched for them outside.
In the past, when Hu Yao was not well, he could easily find them by searching the homes of people who kept dogs, cats, or pigs. Now that she was well, he had no clue where they might be.
The thought of her actually running away made Jiang Han’s molars clench.
The mother and son, unaware of his anxiety, slept soundly at home.
The next day.
Hu Yao slowly woke up. As she opened her eyes, she met Jiang Han’s gaze, his expression unreadable, as he stared at her from the foot of the bed.
She jolted awake.
The night had passed, and he seemed even more “unkempt.” His face was as unpleasant as it had been the night before, but his eyes didn’t hold the same ferocity as yesterday.
They stared at each other in silence for a moment.
He softened his expression and poured her a glass of water, “Wake up and eat something.”
Hu Yao hesitated, her mind slightly dazed, finding his current demeanor strange.
“Are you going to drink it or not?” He asked, his voice slightly heavier.
That sounded more normal.
Hu Yao instinctively reached out and took the glass.
Jiang Han glanced at her dazed appearance, a wave of annoyance washing over him. He had no idea how complicated and speechless his emotions had been when he finally found them sleeping at home after searching for them for hours.
He knew she wouldn’t dare run away from him!
He simply ignored all the nonsense she had said!
The atmosphere at home was strange that morning.
Hu Yao ate her breakfast quietly, Jiang Xiaochao thoughtfully peeled an egg for her first. He also noticed something strange about Jiang Han that morning.
Even when he secretly stole his egg, Jiang Han didn’t scold him. He wasn’t as mean to his little calf as he had been yesterday, preventing him from drinking milk. He even personally made him a bottle of milk!
Jiang Xiaochao wasn’t used to it.
“Daddy, are you stupid?”
Jiang Han’s face darkened, “I can make you stupid! Go play with your cow!”
“Oh!” Jiang Xiaochao felt normal again when Jiang Han was mean to him.
Breakfast was bought by Jiang Han in town. He had gone out last night and didn’t know what time he came back.
He also… bought her many dresses, asking Jiang Xiaochao to bring them to her.
All his actions seemed like a compromise, like he was trying to appease her, but he didn’t say anything.
Hu Yao felt a mix of emotions, unable to describe what she was feeling. His behavior was unexpected. She thought he would continue to treat her with the same gloomy and violent attitude after what happened yesterday.
He had slammed the door and yelled at her last night, but his attitude had changed overnight.
“And this one!” Jiang Xiaochao brought her dress after dress, his small hand reaching into his little pocket, pulling out a gold bracelet that was bulging his pocket. “Daddy gave this to Mommy too.”
He held it up for her, his voice soft and sweet. Perhaps Jiang Han had been nice to him this morning, because he spoke up for him, “Mommy, don’t be angry. Daddy knows he was wrong!”
“Daddy loves Mommy,” he said earnestly.
In Jiang Xiaochao’s mind, this was true. After all, when Hu Yao was angry, Jiang Han would coax her. When he was angry, he would just say it out loud, and Jiang Han would kick him away without even looking at him. The difference in treatment was obvious.
Hu Yao looked down at him, her voice slightly hoarse.
Before she could say anything, a knock came at the door.
It was Jiang Guihua, who had come to complain to Jiang Han about Hu Yao early in the morning. Wang Juanping was with her.
“Han, you left in such a hurry yesterday that I didn’t have a chance to tell you properly. You don’t know how much your wife has been making life difficult for us these past few days! She doesn’t speak properly, and she even hit me! Look at these marks on my hands, all these scratches!”
“And your brother and his wife, they’re just like your wife. They’re always pointing fingers at us and even hit people! Han, how can you associate with such people!”
“Your wife, I asked her to do a little thing, all for your own good! Tell me, whose wife is like her? She’s pregnant and thinks she’s so precious. She’s always sarcastic and disrespectful to us!”
“If she were from a wealthy family, I wouldn’t mind all these faults. But she’s just someone you bought with money. How dare she be so arrogant? Han, you’re foolish! Why did you find such a wife! Juanping is a hundred times better than her! These past few days, your aunt has been helping you…”
Jiang Guihua went on and on, badmouthing Hu Yao to Jiang Han. Wang Juanping chimed in from time to time.
They were getting more and more excited, it was unknown where they got so much audacity–>>
For Jiang Han, they were just relatives with some blood ties who he hadn’t seen for ten or twenty years.
Jiang Guihua and her son didn’t notice that Jiang Han’s face was becoming increasingly gloomy and stern.
“Is that how you talk about her?” He interrupted coldly and impatiently when they became even more sarcastic and mean.
“The person I treat like an ancestor is not precious, but you are?”
“She doesn’t like you and beats you, so you should just stand there and let her beat you? Are you some kind of monster? She wants to hit you, you should just stand there and let her hit you, if she’s happy, I’m even willing to give you some money.”
“She is my Jiang family’s legitimate wife, what are you? I remember the two yuan you gave me all those years ago, and you still dare to act so arrogant? My old lady didn’t even get a chance to say it, who do you think you are?”
“I just think she’s precious, I’m willing to spend money on her, and I’m happy to buy her back and treat her like a treasure, do you have any say in this?”
“You say your daughter is a hundred times better than her, don’t you look in the mirror? Your daughter doesn’t look in the mirror either? Even if you sell her cheap, even if you have a big sale, no one would even glance at her!”
