Zhuo Mu’s expression remained calm as he tested the weight of the calf on his shoulders. “This’ll work. It’s still alive, and using my beast form to carry it would be too tricky.”
Wen Ze, both shocked and impressed, nodded in agreement. “Alright… It’s still quite a long way back, so we can take breaks along the way.”
Zhuo Mu replied, “Let’s talk about that later. Shall we go?”
Wen Ze nodded repeatedly, “Yes, yes.”
He picked up a long wooden stick from the side and prepared to use it to herd the cow.
With his wide shoulders and long legs, Zhuo Mu walked ahead while carrying the calf, leaving deep footprints with each step.
As he passed by the large cow, it let out a low “moo” and tried to charge forward, wanting to take back its calf.
Zhuo Mu gave it a cold, disdainful look with his red eyes. The big cow was so scared that it instantly knelt back down into the muddy ground with a “thud.”
Wen Ze found it somewhat amusing and gently spoke to the cow, “Don’t worry, we’re taking it back to treat its injuries.”
Whether the cow understood or was simply frightened by Zhuo Mu’s presence, it didn’t make any more moves to attack.
After a while, Zhuo Mu carried the calf and walked a long distance away. The cow finally regained its composure, slowly got up, and began to walk in their direction.
Wen Ze smiled in relief. “It worked!”
The calf doesn’t have enough strength, but the adult cow is willing to cooperate. After that, herding it along was pretty much effortless.
Gradually, the calf got some energy back and started mooing to call the adult cow. The adult cow then chased after it with more eagerness.
Since they were traveling on foot rather than in beast form, their pace was much slower. What would have taken them a few hours in the morning stretched out into the entire afternoon. By the time they returned home, the sun was already setting.
Fortunately, he brought some food with him, so he could fill his stomach when he was hungry.
Yin He was anxiously waiting, his footsteps leaving marks all over the ground as he paced back and forth.
When he saw the two of them coming back, he quickly ran over.
“Brother! Brother Zhuo Mu! You’re finally back! I thought something happened to you both. I was about to go find the tribe leader and the others!”
Yin He looked them over from head to toe, making sure they weren’t hurt, and let out a sigh of relief.
He then asked, “What are you carrying? I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
Wen Ze raised his hand slightly and said, “I call them cows. Wait a moment, let’s take a break and drink some water.”
Yin He immediately said, “I’ll go get the water! Wait here!”
Zhuo Mu had already placed the calf on the ground outside the straw shelter. The large cow followed them all the way, likely understanding that they weren’t going to harm it. It walked over and began licking the calf’s fur with its thick, rough tongue.
Wen Ze and Zhuo Mu sat down and drank a lot of water.
Even Zhuo Mu, after carrying a calf over such a long distance, was slightly out of breath.
But he recovered faster than Wen Ze. He put down the bowl and said to Yin He, “I need your help.”
Yin He quickly said, “Brother Zhuo Mu, just tell me what you need.”
“Go to the tribe and bring a few strong Beastmen here.”
“Okay! I’ll go right now!”
Yin He transformed into a giant panda right on the spot and ran off. “Thump thump thump.”
After all the feeding from Wen Ze recently, he’s no longer bloated but had a normal body shape. When he runs, you can see the fat on his body shake.
Not long after, Yin He came running back with a few huge bears following him.
Wen Ze usually thought Yin He’s two-meter frame was tall enough, but now he was only half the height of the other Beastmen.
They transformed into human form, with the tribe leader’s son, Wu Ye, leading the group, followed by Ji Sha and the others.
“Zhuo Mu, Yin He said you called us?” Wu Ye glanced at the animals on the ground and paused for a moment before asking, “Isn’t this a slow-moving animal? We have an agreement with other tribes that we cannot hunt them.”
Zhuo Mu said, “I know. I didn’t call you here to kill them. I need you to help hold the calf down while I treat it.”
Wu Ye replied, “I see. If you wanted to kill it, you don’t really need to call us. Oh, this small animal is seriously injured. Did you carry it back?”
Zhuo Mu responded with a brief “Hmm” and gestured for everyone to move forward.
While Yin He was calling for help, Zhuo Mu had already prepared the medicinal herbs.
Ji Sha carefully rolled up his sleeve, stood at the cow’s head, and held down its head.
“I haven’t seen this slow-moving animal in years. I thought they were gone, but you ended up finding two!”
The other beastmen also took their positions, holding down the calf while one of them spoke up. “Right, their meat is actually tasty. I’ve had it a few times before and have been thinking about it for years.”
“It will take another three years before we can hunt this slow-moving animal again. Sigh.”
“That’s because we hunted too much before. To the point they’re almost extinct now.”
Only Wu Ye didn’t go over. He changed into a grizzly bear and was responsible for keeping a close eye on the large cow.
Wen Ze and Yin He weren’t much help, so they stood far away.
Zhuo Mu suddenly spoke, “Hold it down.”
“Okay!” The Beastmen stood ready.
His expression was calm and steady. He moved quickly and accurately. As the calf cried out in pain and struggled, he swiftly pulled the branch out, and blood splattered from the wound.
Next, he rinsed it with water and applied the medicine carefully and quickly.
He then used a small mat made from the grass he had gathered and carefully wrapped it around the wound.
“Moo, moo…”
The bleeding gradually stopped, and the calf’s pain lessened. It gradually stopped struggling and began to cry out softly.
The large cow, held back by Wu Ye, couldn’t approach and called out anxiously.
“You can let go now,” Zhuo Mu said.
The Beastmen let go and scattered. Wen Ze walked over, carrying a basket of fresh, tender grass on his back.
Zhuo Mu took it and offered some to the calf.
The calf mooed and immediately started eating.
Wen Ze chuckled at how eagerly it was eating. “It must be hungry. Zhuo Mu, go wash your hands, I’ll feed it.”
After confirming the calf wouldn’t hurt anyone, Zhuo Mu nodded and stood up.
The large cow, seeing that the calf was fine, calmed down.
However, Wu Ye wasn’t entirely at ease. After turning into his human form, he still kept an eye on the large cow, making sure it didn’t get too close.
Yin He also brought over a large bundle of grass and placed it at the large cow’s feet.
“Here, you can eat too.”
The large cow looked at the calf deeply, then turned its head, lay on the ground, and slowly ate the grass. It shook its tail from time to time.
Wen Ze was very fond of the young calf. He grabbed some grass and fed it, and even took the opportunity to rub its thick, warm ears.
“Eat more so you can recover soon.”
When the Beastmen returned from washing up, the calf was still eating, and the large cow had fallen asleep.
Ji Sha said sincerely, “Zhuo Mu, Wen Ze, you’re really kind to bring these slow-moving animals back from such a long way to treat them.”
Wen Ze immediately knew they had talked about it. He patted the dust off his pants, stood up, and said with a smile.
“Honestly, I just wanted to be a bit selfish and try raising them myself.”
Except for Zhuo Mu, the other Beastmen were stunned.
“Why raise them? We can’t eat their meat.”
Wen Ze replied, “I want them to do some work.”
“What work can they do?” several Beastmen laughed. “They are very strong, but it’s all brute force. What’s more, they can’t understand anything.”
“Right, and they eat and poop everywhere. If you don’t keep an eye on them, they’ll cause damage. It’s too much trouble to raise them.”
“It’s better to use our beast form than to use them to do the work.”
Wen Ze also laughed. “That’s true. But my situation is a bit different. Yin He is still young, and I’m not planning to find a partner anytime soon, so there aren’t any beastmen available to help.”
The beastmen nodded and murmured “hm,” but deep down, they didn’t really agree with Wen Ze’s approach. They thought raising these two cows was a bad idea.
Yin He suddenly spoke, “Brother, do you think this cow has milk?”
Wen Ze turned his head, “Yes, the calf probably hasn’t been weaned yet.”
Yin He licked his lips, “Animal milk tastes really good,” he said, his desire clearly showing.
Wen Ze laughed heartily. “I’ll see if I can get familiar with it in a couple of days and milk some out.”
One of the reasons he brought the big cow back was because he wanted milk.
Same as before, before transmigrating here, milk and dairy products were everywhere, and he never thought much of it.
Now that he can’t get any, he really misses the taste of milk and cake.
Wu Ye said, “If you want to milk it, we can hold the cow for you, and you can just do it.”
Wen Ze waved his hand. “We can’t do this every time. If she’s scared, it’ll be hard to earn her trust again. Anyway, I’m not in a rush.”
Wu Ye nodded. “Alright, if you need our help, just let us know.”
Zhuo Mu, who had been silent the whole time, said calmly, “I’m also here.”
Wu Ye didn’t think much about it. “Haha, right, there is another warrior at home.”
Ji Sha glanced at the sky and said, “Everything is fine, right? I’ll go back first then.”
Wen Ze felt a bit sorry for troubling them and asked if they wanted to stay and have something to eat before leaving.
The beastmen repeatedly refused. “No, no, dinner is ready at home. Let’s go!”
Everyone waved their hands and didn’t give Wen Ze a chance to insist. They changed into their beast forms and quickly ran off.
There was only one young beastman left, standing there awkwardly, looking at Zhuo Mu.
Wen Ze had seen him during a tribe gathering and knew his name was Bai Xia. His beast form was a white bear, but they hadn’t talked much.
Bai Xia’s hair was a silvery-gray color that was still popular in his previous world. With his sharp, handsome features, he looked very attractive.
He was a single beastman, but he wore hemp clothes, which showed he was skilled enough to afford extra supplies to exchange for fabric and have clothes made.
The fact that he came along with powerful beastmen like Wu Ye and Ji Sha also showed that he was no ordinary beastman.
Wen Ze could tell Bai Xia had something to discuss with Zhuo Mu, so he took the initiative to grab Yin He’s arm and said, “Let’s go get dinner ready.”
Zhuo Mu nodded at them.
Wen Ze and Yin He were busy by the stove, having gotten back late today. He planned to quickly steam some roots and stir-fry a couple of quick dishes.
Zhuo Mu led Bai Xia to the straw shelter and asked, “Should we talk here, or go into the cave?”
Bai Xia raised his hand and scratched his head hard.
“Talking here is fine,” he said with a frustrated tone. “I went to the river to bathe the other day, and I probably fell asleep before my hair dried. Now I’ve got lice, and it’s so itchy.”
Zhuo Mu had already noticed the marks from where he’d been scratching his neck. He asked, “And then?”
Bai Xia replied, “The lice on my body weren’t a big deal. I changed into my human form and washed carefully, and they were gone. But the ones in my hair won’t come out no matter what I do. It’s been so uncomfortable I haven’t been able to sleep properly for days.”
Zhuo Mu said, “Shave your head.”
Sometimes, they have to shave the fur off the animals they hunt, so they’re pretty skilled with it. Shaving his head wouldn’t be that hard.
If the bone knife isn’t fast enough, they can borrow a metal knife from the tribe. They got it in exchange for a lot of supplies with other tribes, but there’s only one.
They just need to provide the tribe with some supplies to use it.
Unexpectedly, his words were strongly opposed by Bai Xia.
“No way! I don’t want to go bald! That’s way too ugly!”
