Chapter 167: He’s Kind of Ugly
“It hurts so much,” Hu Yao gasped, feeling the pain intensify. She furrowed her brow, oblivious to the change in his expression.
Jiang Han’s breath hitched, and he immediately rolled out of bed.
He was a little flustered, the alcohol still lingering in his system. In his haste, he almost tripped over himself.
“Wait for me,” he said, his brow furrowing as he saw her pained expression. He strode towards the bathroom, splashing two large scoops of water on his face.
He couldn’t quite describe his emotions, only that he felt his nerves were on edge.
He hurried back, scooped her up, and rushed out.
“Dad,” Jiang Xiaochao called out, looking at him carrying Hu Yao out in a hurry. He tilted his head, confused.
“Your mom’s going to give you a sibling. Take the stuff your mom packed earlier and follow us,” Jiang Han said without turning back.
Jiang Xiaochao was startled, his eyes widening. After a few seconds, he finally understood. He quickly put down the bottle of milk he had prepared for Qiu Yarong, and ran to grab the small package Hu Yao had packed earlier, following Jiang Han.
“I’m coming, Dad!” He ran quickly, a mix of anticipation and excitement in his steps.
Hu Yao’s sudden labor surprised Qiu Yingwen and Du Ximei. They quickly followed, leaving the two drunkards behind at the Jiang residence.
Tao Wan village was close to town. Jiang Han walked quickly, and they soon arrived at the hospital.
Hu Yao had visited the hospital for checkups many times during her pregnancy. The familiar doctor, seeing Jiang Han’s hurried state and then Hu Yao, immediately understood the situation.
The doctor calmly examined Hu Yao and quickly sent her to the delivery room, leaving Jiang Han waiting outside.
The hand that had been tightly gripping his arm suddenly loosened. Jiang Han watched her disappear into the delivery room, her voice trembling with pain, and his brow furrowed even tighter. The image of her pale, pained face flashed in his mind again.
“Mommy is crying, it hurts so much! Don’t want a brother or sister!” Jiang Xiaochao, who had arrived late, clutching the small package, leaned against the delivery room door. Hearing Hu Yao’s cries, he frowned, his earlier anticipation and excitement completely gone.
He even tossed the package he had been holding so tightly.
Qiu Yingwen picked it up, a little amused.
Before she could comfort him, another aunt who was waiting outside the delivery room chimed in.
It turned out that this aunt’s daughter-in-law was also giving birth around the same time as Hu Yao.
“Your mom is giving you a brother. Women always cry when they give birth. She should just stop crying and save her strength. Don’t involve the child in the pain. It’s fine if it’s a girl, but if it’s a boy, she might…”
This aunt didn’t even know Hu Yao, but she couldn’t stop talking.
Du Ximei interrupted her, but the aunt became even more annoyed, saying that if she wasn’t worried about Hu Yao affecting her daughter-in-law’s chances of giving birth to a grandson, she wouldn’t bother.
She felt she was being kind, but Du Ximei and the others didn’t appreciate it. She couldn’t help but curse Hu Yao in her heart, hoping they would have a sickly, useless daughter!
Suddenly, the delivery room door swung open, and the medical staff rushed out, their voices urgent. “The patient’s condition isn’t good. She fainted, and the baby is almost suffocating in there. We need to…”
“Forget the child, save her!” Jiang Han’s voice was tight, his hand clenched into a fist, trembling slightly.
He interrupted her, his face filled with anxiety. “Go back and save her, don’t you dare touch the child!”
The nurse was startled by his shout. Seeing his dark, intimidating expression, she instinctively took a step back.
“No, I’m not talking about your wife.” The nurse recovered and quickly explained, turning to the middle-aged woman who was watching with a hint of schadenfreude.
“What?! What’s wrong with my daughter-in-law? What about my grandson? What kind of work are you people doing? Can’t even deliver a baby properly? I’m telling you, if anything happens to my grandson, I won’t let you get away with it!” The aunt, who had been mentally cursing Hu Yao while thinking about her eldest grandson, was furious after hearing the nurse’s words. She pointed her finger at the nurse and demanded that she go back and save her grandson.
She was convinced that her grandson would be a boy, even before he was born.
The commotion outside continued, while Hu Yao’s cervix was fully dilated. She couldn’t describe the pain, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Although it hurt, her condition was better than the woman in the next bed. Hu Yao squeezed her hand tightly, listening to the doctor’s instructions and trying to relax.
So this is what giving birth is like. It hurts so much that you want to faint but can’t, enduring wave after wave of pain.
In a daze, Hu Yao suddenly thought of Hu Guifen, a fleeting thought.
She didn’t know how long it had been. Amidst the slightly chaotic voices, a baby’s weak, high-pitched cry rang out.
Hu Yao had successfully given birth.
Another boy.
The doctor turned him over and slapped his bottom, and he cried miserably.
The things they had prepared were still with Jiang Xiaochao. The nurse went out again and brought in a clean package to wrap him up.
The woman in the next bed needed surgery, and the medical staff had a lot to do. Hu Yao’s condition was good, so after finishing the follow-up work, they wheeled her and the baby out.
The little guy was a tiny bundle in her arms. Hu Yao looked down at him, a mix of complex emotions swirling in her heart.
He had just been slapped on the bottom and cried for a while, and his little expression still held a hint of grievance.
“He’s kind of ugly,” Jiang Han took the wheelchair the nurse pushed for her and glanced at the newborn, making a comment.
Most newborns aren’t perfectly beautiful, and some are even less attractive.
This one in Hu Yao’s arms was like a little monkey, but the doctor had told her that her child was actually pretty good-looking, with his five features neat and tidy.
“He’s not ugly, don’t say that,” Hu Yao didn’t like him saying that.
“It’s a brother!” Jiang Xiaochao followed Hu Yao like a little tail into the ward. When Jiang Han helped her sit up in bed, he rushed over and lay on the edge of the bed to look at the baby in her arms.
“He looks like a little monkey, huh?” Jiang Xiaochao leaned closer and looked curiously, saying what was on his mind.
Before his brother was born, he had thrown away all his little packages. Now that he saw him, he was curious and carefully poked him gently.
Hu Yao smiled: “He does look a little like a monkey.”
He was so small, and a little wrinkled.
“Only your son can say that about your son!” Jiang Han pushed back the wet strands of hair from her forehead, annoyed.
He couldn’t say his son was ugly, but Jiang Fu-chao could! The truth couldn’t be spoken.
“Drink some water.” He poured a cup of warm water and brought it to her dry lips.
The night outside was pleasant, with the full moon shining brightly.
