Farming in the Beast World, Leading the Whole Tribe to Prosperity | Chapter 29: Milk Mochi!

The handsome Bai Ling greeted them with a smile and casually asked Sang Hui, “Father, what did the tribe leader need you for?”

Since things weren’t settled yet, Sang Hui didn’t explain too much and simply replied, “People from the Rainbow Sun Tribe came to discuss exchanging cloth with us.”

Bai Ling nodded to show his understanding and wisely chose not to ask any more questions. Instead, he genuinely remarked, “These days, a lot of people in the tribe are weaving during their free time. Fabric is such a valuable thing that can be easily exchanged. We’ve accumulated quite a bit of supplies ourselves.”

Most of the people coming to exchange fabric were from other tribes, but there were also single beastmen like Bai Xia and Zhuo Mu.

If they wanted to exchange with families who were good at weaving, they had to wait in line.

Even their family had to wait for several more days, not to mention people like Li Shui’s family, who were not only great at weaving but also at making clothes.

Sang Hui nodded and turned to look at Wen Ze, thinking to himself that it was all thanks to him.

Wen Ze immediately guessed what he was about to say. Feeling a bit embarrassed to receive more praise, he quickly changed the subject.

“We talked about it and decided to have a gathering tonight. Let’s do it right here in this open space,” Wen Ze suggested.

Young people liked lively events, and as soon as Wen Ze spoke, everyone responded enthusiastically.

“Great idea! There’s still plenty of firewood left from making pottery. I’ll set up a few fire pits.”

“I’ll head back to the cave to grab some food and bring our clay pots too!”

“I’m going to grab some water!”

…

Everyone volunteered and soon became busy.

Wen Ze stretched his neck and quickly found the two cows grazing near Zhuo Mu’s cave.

Zhuo Mu asked, “Are you going to feed the cows?”

After living together for a while, Wen Ze had already gotten used to the unspoken understanding between the two.

“Yes,” he said with a smile. “I also want to see if I can get some milk.”

Zhuo Mu thought for a moment and said, “I’ll go with you. When we cleared the land earlier, we piled up a lot of grass over there. You won’t be able to carry it all by yourself in one trip.”

Wen Ze agreed happily, “Sure!”

As soon as they spoke, Yin He and his little friends came over to join in the fun. Especially Jia Yi, who was particularly interested in Wen Ze’s two cows. The black-and-white bundles of fur rolled playfully at his feet, begging him to come along.

Wen Ze chuckled, “Alright, all of you can come, but be careful. Don’t scare the cows, and watch out so you don’t get stepped on.”

“Got it!” the young ones replied at the same time. “Thank you, Brother Wen Ze!”

Actually, the adults were also curious about how Wen Ze managed to control such a large beast.

But they were busy preparing for the evening meal and couldn’t spare the time to tag along. Instead, they reminded their kids to lend a hand and not cause trouble.

The young ones were very enthusiastic. Those who could change into human form each carried a bundle of grass.

For the ones who couldn’t, their fathers helped by tying the bundles on their backs.

Most of the South Mountain Tribe were bear beastmen. Walking behind the group, Wen Ze watched the large bears, small bears, and the cute little ones hopping and skipping through the cave. The sight was simply adorable.

Meanwhile, he felt like a “kindergarten principal.” The thought amused Wen Ze so much that he couldn’t stop chuckling to himself.

Everyone brought in fresh green grass together, enough to give the two cows a nice treat.

The cows mooed a few times, then started munching right away.

A few little ones watched them and couldn’t stop praising, “Wow, they’re so calm and gentle.”

“Is beast milk produced by the big, slow-moving beast?”

“I can smell the milk now!”

“They look so delicious, slurp.”

Wen Ze let them look at it slowly and gave Zhuo Mu a glance. The two of them went to wash their hands, then came over with their things.

He bent down to check, “There’s a lot of milk again. Can you keep an eye on it while I milk?”

Zhuo Mu: “Okay.”

It wasn’t just Wen Ze who got used to it after the second time; the big cow just gave Wen Ze a quick look before going back to grazing.

Wen Ze worked hard, the sound of “shhhhh” filled the air as more and more pale-yellow milk filled the pot below.

The little ones watched eagerly at first, but soon one of them couldn’t hold back and asked, “Brother Wen Ze, can I try it too?”

Wen Ze was a little worried that the big cow might kick him, so he looked up at Zhuo Mu.

Zhuo Mu nodded in understanding. “It’s fine.”

With him watching over, Wen Ze felt reassured. He smiled, stood up, and moved aside. “Here, you can try.”

“Great! Thank you, Brother Wen Ze!”

A young half-beastman stepped forward, mimicking Wen Ze’s actions and working seriously.

He saw it as a fun new game and said excitedly, “Hahaha, this is so much fun!”

When the other young ones saw this, they became eager and shouted, “Brother Wen Ze, I want to try too!”

Yin He was actually curious and wanted to give it a try, but since he was the oldest of the group, he felt a bit too shy to step forward.

The cows belong to them anyway, so he’ll have plenty of chances to milk them later.

Wen Ze smiled, his eyes squinting slightly, feeling a bit overwhelmed. “Alright, alright, one at a time,” he said.

With the little ones helping out, the milking was finished quickly. Not only was there a good amount, but the smell seemed lighter than it had been in the morning.

It seems they can’t store all this milk since the more they milk, the more they get.

“Let’s go.” Zhuo Mu, knowing Wen Ze needed fresh milk, picked up the pot without hesitation.

Wen Ze: “Thank you.”

The group walked towards the cleared land, about a thousand meters away.

Wen Ze listened to the little ones chattering excitedly about how fun milking was and even asked Yin He, “Since your family is raising the cow, does that mean you’ll get to milk it every day now?”

Yin He straightened up proudly. “I guess so.”

“Wow, I’m so jealous!”

“I want to milk every day too!”

“Can you share some with me a few times?”

The attention from everyone gave Yin He great satisfaction, and he couldn’t stop smiling. “Sure, everyone’s welcome!”

The way they were eagerly volunteering for the task made Wen Ze laugh uncontrollably.

Once the excitement fades, they probably won’t enjoy it as much anymore, haha.

“Wen Ze, you’re back!” Bai Xia, who was tending the fire, looked up and asked.

“Yes!”

“That thing Zhuo Mu is holding… is that beast milk?”

“Yes,” Wen Ze replied. “I was thinking of making some dessert with it.”

“What’s a dessert?” Not just Bai Xia, but also the other adults, besides Zhuo Mu, were confused.

“You can think of it as a kind of snack,” Wen Ze explained.

With so many people and only half a pot of milk, it was definitely not enough to go around.

He plans to add something to the milk to make a dessert after the meal.

Hearing Wen Ze say that, both the adults and the young ones were filled with anticipation.

The other beastmen who had gone to fetch food returned as well. They quickly set up a simple fire pit, and everyone began working together.

As they worked and chatted, time passed by quickly.

Since everyone had come to help Wen Ze clear the land today, he provided a lot of ingredients, most of which he had gathered himself or exchange with the tribe.

Although his supplies are running low, he isn’t worried at all; he can just gather more.

Tonight’s meal includes tender and juicy roasted meat, stewed vegetables, and steamed stems and roots.

These dishes are all quite easy to prepare.

Once everything is ready, everyone grabs their utensils, shares the food, and casually finds a spot to sit and eat.

With so many people, the food tasted even better. The sound of chewing was contagious, and the aroma of the food mixed with the dry scent of burning wood filled the air.

It was already getting dark, and the huge bonfire blazed, creating a relaxing atmosphere.

Wen Ze sat in front of a small fire pit while chewing on some roasted meat. With a wooden spatula, he patiently stirred the food in the clay pot, moving in slow, careful circles.

The ingredients on the pot was a mix of milk, starch, and honey, all blended together with barely any chunks.

After mixing it together, the finished product is called milk mochi.

The sweet, delicious scent of the food filled the air, and thinking about the soft, chewy, and bouncy texture of the mochi made Wen Ze swallow hard. He almost felt like the roasted meat in his mouth wasn’t as tasty anymore.

The key to making milk mochi was not rushing it; it had to be heated slowly over a low flame.

He figured by the time everyone finished their meals, he’d be finished.

“What’s that smell? It’s sweet.” A beastman with a sharp sense of smell sniffed the air.

Hearing this, the others also turned their attention to Wen Ze.

Bai Ling asked eagerly, “Wen Ze, is this the dessert you were talking about?”

“Yes.”

“I’m almost done eating. Let me help you stir it. I noticed you haven’t eaten any vegetables yet.”

Wen Ze didn’t refuse and give Bai Ling a few reminders before going to the side to eat.

Stirring wasn’t difficult. At first, Bai Ling didn’t pay much attention to the food in the clay pot and chatted and laughed with everyone.

A beastman said, “This is the first time I’ve had something Wen Ze made. It’s really delicious!”

Bai Ling nodded in agreement, “Yes, yes, even though it’s the same ingredients, his food just tastes better. The first time I ate his stir-fried beast meat with scallions, I thought about it for several days after I went back.”

“Hahaha!”

“Now that you mention it, I’m really looking forward to the dessert!”

Bai Ling glanced into the clay pot and instantly broke out in a cold sweat.

The beast milk has solidified! It’s turned into a big lump in the clay pot and is sticking to the wooden spatula.”

Uh-oh! Did he stir it too much?

Beast milk and honey are so hard to come by, Bai Ling felt not only embarrassed but also quite upset.

“Wen Ze, come and take a look, I think I made a mistake,” he said, feeling guilty.

Wen Ze had just finished eating as well. He put down his chopsticks, walked over, and said, “No, this looks fine.”

“Huh? But it’s all stuck together.”

“That’s exactly the effect we’re going for,” Wen Ze said as he reached out his hand. “I’ll handle the rest.”

Bai Ling let out a breath, patted his chest, and moved aside.

“That’s great! You really scared me there,” he said, looking down with curiosity. “But how did the milk turn into this?”

Wen Ze explained, “I added some starch. Also, the fresh milk is rich in fat, so as long as you stir it regularly, it won’t stick to the pot.”

“No wonder,” Bai Ling said.

He watched with interest as Wen Ze kept shaping the “dessert” with a spatula, really wondering what it would taste like.

As the smell grew stronger, the little ones, led by Yin He, lost interest in playing and gathered around instead.

They innocently expressed their curiosity. “Wow, will this stick to our teeth?”

Wen Ze wasn’t sure and replied, “I’m not sure either.”

Yin He, completely focused on eating, said, “Even if it sticks, it’s fine. We can just lick it off with our tongues! Brother, how much longer until it’s done?”

He had already bragged to his friends about how delicious fresh milk and double-skin milk were, making them all crave it. Now, they were all looking at Wen Ze eagerly.

Finally, just as Wen Ze was feeling the pressure from their stares, the milk mochi was ready.

Please bear with me if I didn’t update right away 😅. I was either buried in work 💼… or buried in rereading the book 📖. (P.S. Most of the time I’m rereading it 🤭—so you know just how good the story is! 🌟)
