Chapter 67 Watching Movies and Playing Hooligans
It wasn’t until the two children fell asleep at night that Lin Yue quietly discussed with Zhang Yuandong, “If you can, tell me more about current events in the future. Just pick things that are not important and don’t violate military discipline. I’m afraid I’ll say something wrong again.”
Zhang Yuandong immediately thought of the song from earlier that day. He asked, “Was there something wrong with that song?”
Lin Yue nodded, not wanting to say much, only saying, “Tell me more about the major events that happened in the future. Usually, I either don’t talk, or I only pick things I’ve heard of to talk about. That way, I shouldn’t make any mistakes.”
Zhang Yuandong nodded in agreement.
That night, he tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
Lin Yue had never listened to a radio or heard anyone else sing this song, but she could sing it.
Did this mean she knew many things she hadn’t been exposed to, things she shouldn’t know? What about things that hadn’t happened yet, did she know those too?
He didn’t dare to ask a single word.
Just like how the Weaver Girl would fly away if she wore her celestial garment, Zhang Yuandong was afraid that if he asked, Lin Yue would also disappear from his sight, returning to that place he could never reach.
Thinking about this, Zhang Yuandong felt a sense of loss in his heart. The joy he had felt earlier when wearing the clothes she had sewn for him gradually faded away. The gap in their identities made him feel that the distance between them had widened again.
Moreover, he had another worry. Those people seemed to be specifically targeting Lin Yue. Was it because of him, or because of her specialness?
Thinking about this, a chill ran down his spine. He clenched his fists tightly, a sense of urgency rising in his heart.
He had thought he would carefully guard her secret, just as he would guard her as a person. But now he realized that to protect her, he had to become stronger.
While lost in thought, he suddenly felt something coming towards him.
A soldier’s alertness made him instantly prepare himself, but he stopped just as he was about to strike.
Lin Yue turned over, pressing her legs against his. A smooth, delicate little foot pressed boldly against Zhang Yuandong’s chest.
When they were living in the small house in the east of the village, their space was too small, and they were sleeping with someone who was practically a stranger. Both of them were on edge, and their sleeping positions were very stiff.
Now, the kang they were sleeping on was big and spacious, and they were both familiar with each other. Lin Yue’s tension had relaxed, and she wasn’t as well-behaved in her sleep.
Perhaps she was a little cold, her foot rubbed against Zhang Yuandong’s chest twice, as if trying to burrow into something warm.
Zhang Yuandong lay stiffly on the kang, feeling the long leg that he had almost “executed on the spot” rubbing against his chest.
Through the clothes, his chest felt like it was on fire. Only the area where the foot was felt slightly cool, giving him the urge to tuck the foot under his clothes to warm it.
Zhang Yuandong was startled by his own thoughts. He quickly reached out, wanting to take the foot away.
As soon as his hand touched the warm skin, he retracted it as if he had been electrocuted.
He dared not touch her again. He could only stare at her, counting the rhythm of his increasingly uncontrolled heartbeat.
The next morning, Zhang Yuandong, not surprisingly, had two big dark circles under his eyes. Liu Fang teased him all morning. He nervously glanced at Lin Yue and went to work early.
Lin Yue secretly smiled and chased after him, stuffing a bottle of chili sauce into his hand.
During this period, Cangshan Commune organized movie screenings. Because the different brigades were far apart, they were shown in rotation.
Tonight, it was the turn of Xiaoda Village and Donglinjia Village, and the location was the brigade headquarters in Donglinjia Village.
The commune used to come down to show movies often, but the two children were too young and couldn’t sit still. She couldn’t watch them by herself, so Lin Yue had never gone to see them.
Tonight, they were showing a new fantasy movie, perfect for children.
Now that there were more people at home, Lin Yue wasn’t afraid of not being able to manage the children. So, in the afternoon, when Zhang Yuandong came back, they finished dinner early as a family and rode the sidecar tricycle to Donglinjia Village.
Liu Fang was still dressed as a girl, holding the two children in the sidecar. Lin Yue sat behind Zhang Yuandong.
This was the first time they had been so close. Lin Yue wrapped her arms around Zhang Yuandong’s lean waist. She felt his body instantly stiffen and found it a little funny. She slightly pulled away the distance between them.
The further they went, the more people there were on the road.
There were only one or two families in the village who had bicycles.
The villagers were reluctant to use ox carts at this time, so most people walked.
When they met Lin Yue’s family on the road, everyone was envious.
Lin Yue was a little embarrassed with so many familiar faces watching her. She slowly loosened her grip on Zhang Yuandong’s waist, her hands properly grabbing his clothes.
She moved her fingers slightly, feeling a little regret.
Zhang Yuandong’s ears were red. He didn’t know what was wrong with him. When she was hugging him, he wanted to run away.
They both had these little thoughts, but neither knew what the other was thinking. Zhang Yuandong drove, lost in thought, vaguely aware of his own unusual behavior but afraid to think about it too deeply.
Although tonight’s movie was mainly for children, it was a rare fantasy film, so adults loved it too.
Many people had gone to claim their seats early, especially those from the village. They had gathered in the area early.
Lin Yue’s family arrived relatively early, but they could only sit in the middle, towards the back. Those who came later were lucky to get a seat at all. Many people didn’t even have a place to put their stools and had to stand to watch.
Night quickly fell, and the crowd fell silent as the movie began.
Lin Yue and Zhang Yuandong each held a child, while Liu Fang sat next to Lin Yue, also to protect her.
Lin Yue didn’t encounter any danger, but Liu Fang did.
It was dark and crowded, and there were always some shameless rogues who liked to sneak around and take advantage of young girls and women.
Unfortunately, this man encountered Liu Fang tonight.
There were too many people, and Liu Fang was afraid of danger, so he kept a close eye on their surroundings with Zhang Yuandong.
When he felt a hairy hand on his leg, moving restlessly, he almost couldn’t control his reflexes and flipped the man to the ground.
But he quickly realized what was happening. He had encountered a rogue.
He grinned, grabbed the man’s finger, and twisted it back forcefully.
There was a pig-like scream. The man was in so much pain that he fell to his knees, his hand still tightly grasped by Liu Fang.
The crowd immediately became agitated. Everyone stood up, wanting to see what had happened.
Tonight, there were not only village militia patrolling nearby, but also a police officer. This was because there were too many people, and they were afraid of accidents.
Hearing the scream, someone immediately shone a flashlight.
The light wasn’t very strong, but it was enough to see the man’s face. He was a middle-aged man in his forties, hunched over, kneeling on the ground, wailing in pain.
Because his head was lowered, his face couldn’t be seen, but Lin Yue recognized him from the patches of baldness on his head. It was Zhou Lai Tou from the village.
Zhou Lai Tou was a notorious old bachelor in Donglinjia Village. He was poor and ugly, and he had never been able to find a wife.
A few years ago, when Lin Yue’s adoptive parents had just passed away, he had hit on Lin Yue.
Lin Lao Er thought Lin Yue was a ticking time bomb and wanted to get rid of her as quickly as possible. He almost agreed.
At that time, it was Mr. Xu, relying on his past kindness in saving Lin Yue’s life, who stopped it.
Lin Lao Er didn’t dare to go against Mr. Xu, so he gave up.
But later, Lin Lao Er secretly accepted half a bag of grain from Sun Hongmei and quickly sent Lin Yue away, so quickly that Mr. Xu couldn’t even react.
Seeing that everyone was looking over, Liu Fang changed his expression in a second. He pretended to be crazy, tightly twisting the man’s finger, and cried out in a squeaky voice, “Help! There’s a rogue! He touched me! It’s so scary, help me!”
Lin Yue was shocked by his series of actions, her jaw dropped.
Seeing that Liu Fang was not at a disadvantage, Zhang Yuandong held one child in his arms, extended his other arm behind Lin Yue, and wrapped it around her, protecting her.
The people around who were watching the movie were also scared. They all protected their families and moved back, no one dared to rescue the “weak and pitiful” woman. It was the police officer on duty who came over and rescued the even more “pitiful” rogue.
Zhou Lai Zi cursed and refused to admit it, saying all sorts of inappropriate things, blaming Liu Fang.
Liu Fang was not someone who could be provoked by a few words. Seeing that the man was under police control, he didn’t say a word and just sat on the stool, crying.
There was only one police station in the county, and the person who came was Zhang Yuandong’s acquaintance.
He found Zhou Lai Zi too noisy and kicked him hard, greeting Zhang Yuandong, but his eyes never left Lin Yue, “Brother Zhang, you’re here to watch a movie too, huh? Oh, this is your wife, she’s so beautiful, Brother Zhang is so lucky!”
The man was Zhou Quan’an, who had recently joined the police force.
Zhang Yuandong rarely interacted with this man at the station and didn’t have a good impression of him. He didn’t like the flippant way he spoke about Lin Yue, so he slightly frowned and nodded in greeting.
Lin Yue didn’t like this man’s appearance either. She felt that he wasn’t someone easy to get along with. Even wearing a uniform couldn’t cover up the strange feeling he gave off.
Lin Yue’s group was indifferent to him, even Liu Fang didn’t bother to look at him.
They thought he would leave out of embarrassment, but suddenly another head popped up behind him.
The person reached out and pinched Zhou Quan’an, acting very intimate, and glared fiercely at Lin Yue.
Lin Yue met the person’s gaze and couldn’t help but be stunned. It was Lin Mei.
