Shen Nanxing slowly opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was a blinding white light, followed by the strong, sterile smell of disinfectant typical of hospitals. The sharp scent gradually pulled his consciousness out of its haze.
He remembered staying up late reading novels and suddenly passing out from a heart problem. How did he end up in a hospital? Could it be that his neighbor heard him collapse, broke in, and saved him?
Turning his head, Shen Nanxing saw Fu Zhiyuan asleep by his bedside, his round, bright eyes resting gently on his side profile even in sleep.
When did his neighbor get replaced? And by such a handsome guy too.
Well, at least the view was nice.
Shen Nanxing had no idea how long he’d been lying in the hospital bed, only that his body felt so stiff it was nearly impossible to move. Every bone seemed to be protesting as if on the verge of falling apart.
Cautiously, he tried shifting his body, attempting to sit up.
Fu Zhiyuan wasn’t deeply asleep. The slight movements immediately pulled him from his light rest. His voice carried a touch of concern as he spoke softly,
“Xingbao, you’re awake. Why didn’t you wake me up?”
He quickly moved closer, skillfully and gently helping Shen Nanxing adjust to a more comfortable position.
As the handsome face before him drew nearer, the faint scent of sandalwood from Fu Zhiyuan lingered at the tip of Shen Nanxing’s nose, creating the illusion of being embraced.
For a moment, Shen Nanxing was dazed. Then, as a reflex, he resisted Fu Zhiyuan’s touch, his eyes filled with confusion.
“Who are you?”
Wait—why was this guy calling him Xingbao? So cheesy! Did he even know this man? Were they close?
At first, Fu Zhiyuan thought Shen Nanxing was joking and didn’t take it seriously. He chuckled softly, then leaned in and hugged Shen Nanxing, his voice low and affectionate.
“I’m your future husband.”
Shen Nanxing was momentarily speechless.
Seriously? Since when were handsome guys this bold? First meeting, and he’s already claiming to be his husband?
Unwilling to back down, Shen Nanxing retorted, “Well, I’m your husband then!”
Fu Zhiyuan lowered his head slightly, their gazes locking. Shen Nanxing’s eyes were guarded, examining him like a complete stranger.
That look instantly sent a wave of unease through Fu Zhiyuan, his face briefly clouded with panic.
“Xingbao, what’s wrong? Don’t scare me,” he whispered, staring closely at Shen Nanxing as if trying to find some clue in his expression.
He didn’t like this joke. Not at all.
Shen Nanxing, for his part, was equally puzzled by Fu Zhiyuan’s reaction.
Why was this guy so tense?
“Uh… I don’t remember meeting you before. Are you the new neighbor who just moved in next door?”
His polite but distant tone felt like a hammer to Fu Zhiyuan’s chest, leaving him breathless with an aching pain.
Fu Zhiyuan forced his trembling hands to still and replied hoarsely, “No.”
Without another word, he hurried out of the hospital room to find a doctor.
Shen Nanxing let out a deep sigh.
“Wow… So people still do good deeds without leaving their names these days?”
He had wanted to ask the man’s name to thank him properly once he was discharged, but the guy didn’t even give him a chance.
A few minutes later, Fu Zhiyuan returned, this time with Dr. Chen and Shen Chuanqiong following closely behind.
Shen Chuanqiong was discussing Shen Nanxing’s condition with the doctor when Fu Zhiyuan rushed in, his voice heavy with despair.
“Xingbao woke up, but…he doesn’t seem to remember me.”
Hearing this, Shen Chuanqiong froze. What?!
Dragging Dr. Chen along, he burst into the hospital room, worry written all over his face as he rushed to Shen Nanxing’s bedside.
“Guaibao[1]Good Baby, you’re finally awake!”
Before Shen Nanxing could react, he was pulled into a bear hug.
Feeling uncomfortable, Shen Nanxing tried to push the person away but failed.
“…And who are you?”
Hearing those words, Shen Chuanqiong’s face paled, mumbling repeatedly, “This is bad. This is really bad.”
Grabbing Dr. Chen, he pleaded desperately,
“Doctor! He doesn’t even recognize me anymore! Is there any medication to help restore his memory? Please prescribe something for Guaibao!”
For a moment, the other three people in the hospital room fell silent.
Shen Nanxing (thinking):I can clearly remember the plot of the novel I was reading last night, so why would my memory be failing?!
Dr. Chen: Do you think this is some martial arts world where you can just pop a miracle pill and everything will be fine?
Fu Zhiyuan: Are you speaking without thinking at all?
Shen Chuanqiong, seemingly oblivious to their reactions, continued urging, “Dr. Chen, say something already!”
Dr. Chen cleared his throat and professionally asked, “Mr. Shen, do you feel any physical discomfort?”
Shen Nanxing shook his head. “No.”
“Do you remember what happened before you fainted?”
Shen Nanxing thought for a moment before replying, “I remember staying up late reading a novel last night. The plot was so dramatic and ridiculous that I ended up arguing with someone online. Then, I felt a sharp pain in my chest and blacked out…”
The more Shen Chuanqiong listened, the more alarmed he became—because that wasn’t what had happened at all. Just yesterday, Guaibao had been in the study discussing a vacation with him. How had that turned into staying up late reading novels in his memory?
Dr. Chen furrowed his brows and continued, “Do you remember if anyone else was present at the time?”
Shen Nanxing looked puzzled. “I was home alone. How could anyone else have been there? Actually, I was about to ask—who brought me to the hospital last night?”
Fu Zhiyuan had been closely observing Shen Nanxing’s reactions this whole time. He noticed that the way Xingbao looked at each of them felt distant, unfamiliar. Not only was his memory scrambled, but he seemed to have forgotten all of them completely.
It was hard for him to accept.
After all the effort it took to win over his boyfriend, how could he just forget him overnight?
Shen Chuanqiong felt his vision blur. He’d rather believe this was all a bad dream than face the reality that Shen Nanxing’s memory was in chaos.
How were they supposed to explain this when their parents arrived later?!
Dr. Chen, remaining calm, said, “Alright, I understand. Mr. Shen, please rest well for now. You’ll need to undergo some tests later.”
Shen Nanxing gave a soft “Oh” and lay back down.
Dr. Chen then turned to Shen Chuanqiong and gestured for him to step outside. Fu Zhiyuan gave Shen Nanxing a deep, lingering look before following them out of the room.
In the doctor’s office, Dr. Chen sighed and spoke in a serious tone.
“Mr. Shen has clearly experienced some form of psychological shock, which has caused his memory confusion. To help him recover, physical therapy will be necessary.”
“Family members should take him to places he’s familiar with or engage him in activities he used to enjoy. This will increase the chances of his memories returning.”
“Also, be sure not to agitate him further. You must accommodate him and avoid emotional stress.”
Both Shen Chuanqiong and Fu Zhiyuan nodded silently, firmly committing Dr. Chen’s instructions to memory.
