Chapter 40: A Fire Destroys Everything
Shen Wanwan watched him, sitting quietly on the passenger seat, her gaze flitting towards the cold and indifferent young man beside her.
“I know you’ve forgotten everything, and I’m not trying to make you remember anything specific. This key, you entrusted it to me back then, saying it held your most precious memories.”
“Now that we’ve reunited, I should return the key to its rightful owner.”
She finished her sentence, her eyes fixed on him. This was her male lead, he shouldn’t be so cold.
Chen Jinsi, sitting in the passenger seat, played with a silver Rubik’s Cube, glancing at her through the rearview mirror. “Oh, our third brother did indeed stay at the Qingmu Sanatorium for a while four years ago. But, Shen classmate, your words imply you recognized him long ago. Why only admit it now?”
Jiang Sheng stared at his phone, his message to Ning Qiutang sinking without a ripple.
Tsk.
“This phone’s as useless as a brick. Just throw it in the recycling bin.”
He sent another message.
Shen Wanwan lowered her eyes, putting on a look of distress, and began her self-directed performance. “I wasn’t sure at first, and I was also very scared.”
“He seems dangerous…”
“If you’re scared of me, then get lost.” Jiang Sheng, not receiving a reply from Ning Qiutang, his face darkened, his cold gaze fell upon her, filled with disdain.
Shen Wanwan, terrified, shifted back in her seat, forcing herself to speak. “But…but you said…never mind.”
“If you don’t acknowledge it, then there’s nothing to be said.”
“Take back your things, and I’ll keep my distance.”
Jiang Sheng’s expression was icy, his mood extremely bad.
He only agreed to come here because he wanted to see what she was up to, and to give her a good lesson.
Soon, the car arrived at the mountain forest behind the sanatorium she mentioned. There was an artificial lake in the forest, and a small wooden cabin beside it.
After getting out of the car, Shen Wanwan eagerly walked towards the cabin.
“Jiang Sheng, even though you’ve forgotten, we used to fish together, lie on the grass and sunbathe together, and make promises here to rely on each other forever.”
She seemed to be back home, her smile perfect, filled with hopeful bliss.
Jiang Sheng looked at the cabin, as if remembering something. He walked behind her, stepping on a dry branch, and glanced back at Chen Jinsi.
Chen Jinsi didn’t get out of the car, but upon receiving the signal, he went to the back and brought out two buckets of gasoline.
“Jiang Sheng, come and see, these are our photos, and the little clay figures we made together. Oh, you asked me how I learned that piano piece, right? It was you who taught me.”
Shen Wanwan seemed very excited, pulling out a bunch of things to prove they had shared unforgettable memories.
She brought him here beforehand, just to strengthen their emotional bond. If she waited any longer, he might become someone else’s man.
Jiang Sheng looked at the things coldly, his mind slowly recalling what she said, but he remained like a emotionless robot, without any reaction.
Shen Wanwan wanted to continue talking.
Suddenly, the young man took out a cigarette and lighter. “Finished talking?”
Shen Wanwan suddenly had a bad feeling, especially seeing the gasoline buckets that Chen Jinsi brought.
“You…what are you going to do!”
Jiang Sheng’s face was cold and gloomy, like the dead silence before a storm. He looked at her with a mocking smile. “In this world, only what I acknowledge is real. If I don’t acknowledge it, then it never happened.”
“Talking about memories with me? That’s just bullshit.”
Chen Jinsi poured the gasoline over the wooden cabin, then clapped his hands. They say birds of a feather flock together, they must be cut from the same cloth.
He narrowed his eyes and chuckled, “Shen, you probably don’t know Jiang, the Prince. He’s a real bad guy.”
Shen Wanwan’s eyes widened. Only then did she understand why the world’s conquest mission was so difficult. It was simply an impossible task.
“No… Jiang Sheng, you can’t do this. You think you’re destroying a wooden hut? You’re fighting… You know who you’re fighting against!”
Destroying crucial plot points, severely disrespecting the world’s administrators, did he know how serious this was?
Suddenly, the clear night sky with its twinkling stars became overcast with dark clouds. The streetlights flickered ominously, creating a terrifying atmosphere.
“Fighting against who?”
“It’s always a life-or-death situation.” Jiang Sheng tossed his half-smoked cigarette into the wooden hut.
With a deafening roar, thunder cracked and lightning flashed.
The wooden hut was quickly engulfed in flames.
Shen Wanwan’s legs gave way, and she sat on the ground, her vision filled with red system alerts.
“It’s not my fault!” She frantically waved her hands, trying to get rid of the system.
The thunder grew louder, but no rain fell.
The flames roared, engulfing the surroundings in smoke and ash.
Jiang Sheng suddenly turned pale, clutching his chest and dropping to one knee.
“Third Brother!” Chen Jinsi was terrified and rushed to support him.
The veins in Jiang Sheng’s neck seemed about to burst. He endured the intense pain, refusing to yield.
Suddenly, a strong wind whipped up, and a bolt of lightning struck the lake.
“Damn it, what’s going on!”
“Jiang Sheng, you’re arrogant and presumptuous. You can’t change anything!”
Shen Wanwan sat on the ground, pointing at him and laughing.
Jiang Sheng sneered at her, pulling out a knife from behind and pressing it against his heart. “Is that all you’ve got? You torture me but won’t let me die?”
He seemed to be talking to someone unseen.
“Third Brother!” Chen Jinsi, completely helpless in the face of this unexpected turn of events, tried to grab the sharp knife.
The next second, everyone fainted.
Ning Qiutang had just arrived home when she saw the gloomy sky and the moon in the night, looking like an eye. When she died in her past life, the moon was also blood red.
Her heart ached, and she immediately knelt on the ground.
Her face turned pale, tears welled up in her eyes, and her whole body felt like it was plunged into an icy abyss. Her blood seemed to flow backward.
“Miss!” The driver quickly rushed to support her.
She also fainted.
When she woke up again, she found herself being held by her mother.
“Darling, you’re finally awake. Where does it hurt?”
Ning’s Mother’s eyes were red and swollen. Seeing her daughter’s weak appearance, she was terrified. How could a mother bear to see her child suddenly faint?
Ning Qiutang slowly sat up, realizing that her body had recovered. The excruciating pain she had felt earlier was gone, as if it was just a dream.
“I seem to be fine.”
“No, you still need to go to the hospital for a checkup!” Ning’s Mother stroked her face, urging her to obey.
Ning Qiutang didn’t dare refuse, but she was afraid that her mother would find out about her illness earlier that day.
As they arrived at the hospital, Ning Qiutang came out of the emergency room and saw an ambulance pulling up. Several medical staff carried a person down from the vehicle.
Ning Qiutang stepped aside to make way, but she couldn’t help but notice the hand that hung down. It was a long, slender, well-defined hand with a familiar string of prayer beads.
“Jiang Sheng!” Her feet wouldn’t obey her, and she walked straight towards him.
