The main reason why Xie Kui asked this question was his concern that Su Yu might have made this decision on his own, without the knowledge of his family. This would inevitably lead to difficulties for Xiao He in the future.
Now, the fact that Su Yu had brought his grandfather over was evidence that he had Xiao He in mind and was taking this engagement seriously.
Looking at Wang Jinhe, Xie Kui couldn’t help but speak up, saying, ” Xiao He, don’t blame Uncle for meddling.”
Wang Jinhe shook her head, “Uncle, what are you talking about? How could I blame you for meddling?”
Xie Kui smiled at both of them and said, “Alright, you two can head back now. I think after what you’ve done these past few days, they probably won’t dare to cause trouble anymore. After all, no one wants to become the next Luo Shi.”
Today, Luo Shi had a really tough time, and she probably hadn’t expected to be beaten down like that.
“Alright, Village Chief, we’ll head back now,” Wang Jinhe said as she and Su Yu left together.
On the way back, Su Yu kept looking at Wang Jinhe, which made her smile wryly and say, “Why are you looking at me like that? It’s as if you’ve never seen me before.”
Su Yu shook his head and replied, “I’ve seen you, even back when you weren’t pregnant.”
Wang Jinhe was briefly puzzled and then chuckled, saying, “That was three or four years ago. Why bring it up now?”
“Never mind, let’s go back.”
“Sure.”
Back home, Wang Jinhe went to check on her strawberry and dragon fruit seedlings in the field. Su Yu followed along, planning to inspect them together.
“They’re sprouting!” Wang Jinhe exclaimed, surprised as she looked at the tender shoots pushing through the soil.
Su Yu observed the small seedlings, each with only two leaves, and had no idea what they were.
“Xiaohe, they all look the same to me. Are you sure you can identify them?” Su Yu furrowed her brow and asked, puzzled by the tiny plants on the ground.
Wang Jinhe couldn’t help but chuckle as she looked at Su Yu and said, “You really are an ignorant young master when it comes to agriculture. It’s indeed a bit challenging for you to identify these.”
“Isn’t it? They all look the same to me,” Su Yu shrugged.
“When they’ve just sprouted, they all do look the same. But give them a little time to grow, and it’ll be easier to distinguish them. You’ve been here all this time, but do you really not have anything that needs taking care of at home?” Wang Jinhe turned to look at Su Yu, furrowing her brow as she asked.
Although she hoped Su Yu would stay here and accompany their child, she also understood that he had his own responsibilities. Keeping him here all the time might not be the best option.
“I have Yuan Bao and the others handling things at home now. As for my half-brother, he’s irrelevant at the moment. He’s been imprisoned in the county jail, and even if he gets out later, he won’t have a bright future,” Su Yu replied, his mood lightening at the thought of Su Jing’s current predicament.
“I remember you said he was arrested for smuggling private salt, right? How could a bastard like him have such power to commit such actions?”
“My father provided him with the backing. Over the years, he’s been holding on to this mother and son duo, probably making them believe that they have gained significant influence within our family.”
Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu in astonishment, realizing the extent of the drama his parents had been playing. She furrowed her brow and said, “They won’t go provoke your mother again, will they?”
“Yes, when I was still living at home and that woman provoked my mother, my mother would come to me for trouble, tormenting me relentlessly. I couldn’t understand the connection, especially during my last visit home. I couldn’t fathom it, nor could I forgive it,” Su Yu explained, feeling a strong aversion to the situation even if there were reasons behind it. After all, they were his parents.
Wang Jinhe suddenly regretted bringing up the topic and asked, “Could your parents find their way here?”
“No, they won’t. They’ll assume that I’ll return as soon as I cool down, and they can talk to me about it once I’m back. But I won’t be going back in the near future,” Su Yu replied. With his wife and child here, there was no reason for him to return. Regarding his grandfather, he had already explained the situation and had no concerns in that regard.
Wang Jinhe couldn’t help but shake his head, realizing why Su Yu’s relationship with his parents had deteriorated so much. “Your parents know you’re angry, and yet they don’t care? That’s quite peculiar.”
It’s hard for anyone to be happy in a situation like this.
Su Yu made a noncommittal sound and said, “Maybe they think they’re parents and they don’t need to apologize to their son?”
He had never expected them to apologize but had hoped for a change in attitude. However, it seemed that wasn’t necessary anymore.
“Let’s not dwell on this. If you don’t want to go back, you can stay here, and if you have any business matters, you can return later,” Wang Jinhe replied, patting his shoulder. She was very serious.
She felt a bit sympathetic toward Su Yu. Having parents or not didn’t make much difference in his case.
“Don’t look at me like that,” Su Yu said, somewhat helpless when he saw the way Wang Jinhe was looking at him. He had become accustomed to it, and there was no need for sympathy.
“There probably won’t be any major issues in Beijing, and as for the other businesses, they can manage well even without me. I’ll stay here with you and our little treasure for a while. After that, I’ll consider other things. Besides, we’re planning to open a year-round fruit store, right? We should gradually start working on the regulations for that after this matter is settled.” Su Yu was a man of action. Once he decided on something, he was determined to do it well.
“Okay.”
After weeding the strawberry seedlings, the two of them returned home.
As soon as they got home, they saw Xiao Bao sitting on the doorstep with Youtiao and the others. His little mouth was pursed, and Su Yu felt like he could hang an oil bottle from it.
“Come and let Daddy see, who made our Xiao Bao angry? Look at that little mouth, it’s like an oil bottle,” Su Yu reached out and pinched Xiao Bao’s cheek, couldn’t help but smile.
“Daddy, you and Mommy went out without me,” Xiao Bao said unhappily.
Su Yu thought something was wrong with Xiao Bao, but it turned out he was just upset because they hadn’t taken him with them.
He reached out and pinched Xiao Bao’s little cheek. “When Mommy and Daddy went out, you were sleeping, so we didn’t wake you up.”
Xiao Bao pouted, okay, he forgave Daddy.
While Su Yu and Wang Jinhe were preparing for their engagement, Yuanbao had already returned to the capital city with watermelons.
“Yuan Bao, you’ve finally come. How did it go this time? Did you bring back watermelons? People have been asking every day if we still have any left. You have no idea how well they sell,” these people were simply willing to spend their money, buying a watermelon for several taels of silver.
But to be fair, these watermelons were really exceptional.
“This time, I brought some back.”
“Really? How many did you bring?” The shop owner’s eyes lit up as he looked at Yuan Bao.

I still don’t understand why his parents did what they did. Was it a way to like train Su Yu?? If it was then wth that’s an odd way to do things. If it was to get rid of that mother-son duo then honestly he can just ignore them and not give them any favors. But to do what they did was really wrong.
I feel the same way. Unless there was some yet-to-be explained reason, why all the twists and turns to solve a concubine and shu born son? If it was training for Su Yu, with his intelligence, why not explain the situation and then give him the task directly? Lastly, for a scheme they cooked up themselves, for what right does the mother have to torment and punish him whenever she’s upset? What a gross distortion of and disrespect to, the intention and importance of filial piety.
