Yu Qingyue blew on the noodles to cool them down, picked up a chopstick full, and tasted it. The noodles were firm and smooth, mixed with the fragrant beef broth. The taste was indeed good.
“How is it? Tasty, right?” Yu Wanlai asked eagerly as he watched Yu Qingyue take a bite.
Yu Qingyue put down his chopsticks and said, “If you keep looking at me like that, I won’t eat anymore…”
Yu Wanlai averted his gaze and pouted. What’s the big deal? I just thought it was funny that you’re wearing these clothes. It seems the threat worked, as Yu Qingyue, for the first time that evening, gave a slight smile.
The next morning, since the car was still at the company and hadn’t been brought back, the driver arrived in another car and was waiting outside. When Yu Wanlai saw the car, he couldn’t help but twitch his mouth. “Mu Shang, another Bentley,” he thought. He had never noticed before how many Bentleys were in the garage. Not you… a Bentley fan!
This car was one that Yu Qingyue rarely drove, a limited edition that only existed in the country in a single model. Yu Wanlai had barely had a chance to ride in it, and now it was with… Yu Qingyue glanced at Yu Wanlai as if looking at a fool, then muttered, “Hurry up and get in,” before stepping toward the back seat of the car.
Yu Wanlai thought: Oh, today he’s not being harsh! He stood there, his eyes wide in disbelief, staring at the person inside the car.
Yu Qingyue clicked his tongue, his voice turning cold, “Are you getting in or not?”
“Yes, of course, I’m getting in.” This was more like it. Recently, the company was bidding for a new project, and for the past few days, the CEO’s office had been immersed in low pressure, too afraid to speak.
There was a sound of a door opening from the office, and several people simultaneously stretched their necks to look towards the sound.
“If you ever show me such trash again, don’t come back!”
“Yes, Mr. Yu, I understand.” The man quickly walked out of the office with disheveled papers in his arms, as if there was some monster chasing him.
Seeing him leave, everyone quickly turned back to focus on their computer screens. It wasn’t until the sound of the elevator rang that the atmosphere seemed to start moving.
The female assistant answered an internal phone call, her hand trembling, “Xiao[1]little, an affectionate way to call someone, they attached Xiao in a nickname. Lai, come in for a moment.” The door was open, and Yu Wanlai could see the dark expression on Yu Qingyue’s face.
Xiao Lai replied and stood up, taking a deep breath before walking towards the office. She walked firmly, as if preparing for battle, if one ignored her slightly trembling hands.
“Close the door.” Xiao Lai responded, and Yu Wanlai’s view was blocked as the door shut, and his attention turned to the computer screen again.
The other female assistant, Xiao Chen, glanced at the office, then turned her gaze back to Xiao Lai’s computer screen, pausing for a few seconds.
In the morning, the family sat around the breakfast table. Yu Wanlai, unusually, didn’t tear the fried dough sticks into pieces to throw them into the porridge, because today’s porridge was with century egg and lean pork, which he didn’t like. If he had thrown in the fried dough sticks, it would have been a waste! Over there, Yu Cheng and Yu Qingyue were discussing today’s bidding. Midway, Yu Cheng called out to Yu Wanlai, but after waiting for a long time with no response, he turned and looked at Yu Wanlai, only to find that he was staring down, carefully picking through his bowl.
Under the table, Yu Qingyue kicked Yu Wanlai’s leg. Yu Wanlai lifted his head and looked across at him, asking, “Why did you kick me?”
Yu Qingyue rolled his eyes at him and turned away. “You idiot.”
Qin Shuang had finished eating, put down her bowl and chopsticks, and glanced at Yu Qingyue. It seemed that recently, his relationship with Yu Wanlai had gotten closer. She then turned her gaze to Yu Wanlai. It seemed this person still had some ability…
Meanwhile, things were tense, and as expected, Yu Wanlai was getting scolded again.
Yu Cheng, with a stern face, instructed, “I heard from your brother that you’ve been performing well lately, so today for the bidding, you’ll go with us. Observe more, speak less. Got it?”
Yu Wanlai’s mouth drooped in dissatisfaction. He didn’t really want to go, so why make it seem like he would cause trouble?
The car stopped downstairs at the company. Yu Wanlai looked out at the tall building before turning back to Yu Qingyue and finally couldn’t help but ask, “Aren’t we supposed to go to the bidding? Why are we here?!”
Yu Qingyue looked at him blankly, his expression one of disbelief, as if asking, “Do you have a brain?” Normally, he wouldn’t have brought Yu Wanlai, but his father asked him to. Since he had always respected his father, even though he didn’t quite understand, he would still comply.
It was like when his father brought this person back home a few years ago, and he was shocked to find that his mother had agreed. He still didn’t understand, but he accepted it. He didn’t know the details, just that this person was two years older than him, and he thought it must have happened before his parents were dating. That’s probably why his mother couldn’t bear it and agreed to bring him back. Who would have thought that after he was brought back, his parents began fighting frequently, only recently calming down a bit.
A few minutes later, Xu Ran came out of the building, holding a bulging bag of documents and getting into the front passenger seat.
Yu Qingyue looked at the driver. “Drive.”
Then he turned to Xu Ran, “Have you confirmed everything? Is everything in order? Did you bring everything?”
Xu Ran turned back when he heard the voice, “It’s all confirmed, no issues. Do you want to check it?”
Yu Qingyue nodded, took the briefcase, which was quite heavy, and when he took it, his hand was slightly lowered by its weight. He pulled out the bidding plan from the case, confirmed the price, and then handed it to Yu Wanlai.
Yu Wanlai, who had been craning his neck to look earlier, now had the document handed to him. He immediately held it with both hands, placed it on his lap, and moved back to his original position. He wasn’t joking—although he hadn’t read the parts of the original text related to business and didn’t understand much of the current situation, he knew that in this kind of ambiguous and tricky scenario, taking this document could only bring trouble! At that moment, the document felt more like a bomb to him.
“I’ll pass on looking at it, and I can’t understand it anyway…” Yu Qingyue scoffed lightly, “At least make up a decent excuse, or are you saying your mom didn’t even let you finish high school?”
“Not letting you look, how would I know if you’ll go back and complain to dad, saying that I’m not a good older brother? Or that I look down on you? Just take it.”
What nonsense was that? When did he ever complain? Oh, it seemed that the original character did indeed often complain behind others’ backs, acting two-faced. But he probably didn’t succeed in complaining—his father always looked at him like he was useless scrap metal. Oh, it also seemed that in the book, Yu Cheng had privately talked to Yu Qingyue several times.
Yu Wanlai, feeling disgruntled, mumbled as he took the “hot potato” of a document, “You’re not a good older brother. You’ve never even called me ‘bro’.” He paused for a few seconds, getting even more upset, “You rarely even call my name…”
Yu Qingyue felt like there was a fly buzzing in his ear. He bent his fingers and tapped a few times on the armrest between their seats. “What are you mumbling about? If you can’t understand, why don’t you just look properly?”
Yu Wanlai thought: Listen to this, this is supposed to be a younger brother? Treats him like a dog!
“Got it, I’ll look at it.”
Xu Ran, sitting in the front passenger seat, nearly had his ears perked up as if trying to hear every word. The amount of information this morning was overwhelming. So, it turned out that this person was Mr. Yu’s older brother? But why did he mention “your mom”? Shouldn’t that be a…?
After a moment, Xu Ran sighed, thinking: “As expected, the wealthy families have many dramas, the circle is so messy.”
After leaving the hotel conference hall, everyone had grim expressions, and Yu Qingyue’s face was as dark as it could get.
