Yu Wanlai furrowed his brows. Was there still something about him? The uneasy feeling in his heart grew stronger as he took the phone. “Hello, this is Yu Wanlai. Is there something…?”
On the other end of the line, Xu Ran’s voice came through. If you weren’t paying close attention, his tone seemed calm, but Yu Wanlai could still detect the urgency hidden in his voice. Even his speaking speed was faster than usual. Xu Ran, holding the phone, glanced at the operating room, which still had its red light on. “Are you able to reach Mr. Yu? I haven’t been able to get through to him.”
Yu Wanlai: This is really tough for him—how would he have Yu Cheng’s phone number? The original owner’s phone probably had it, as he had unlocked it before. But aside from his mother, no one else really contacted him, so he never carried it with him. He would only occasionally take it out to charge or check for important messages.
“…What happened? Why don’t you tell me first, and I’ll find someone?” Xu Ran hesitated. Their relationship as brothers didn’t seem very harmonious, so was this something he could share with Yu Wanlai?
Yu Wanlai waited for a long time, but Xu Ran didn’t speak. He pulled the phone away and checked the screen to confirm the call was still active before speaking again. “Are you going to say something or not? If not, I’m not bothering with it.”
Xu Ran gritted his teeth. He thought Yu Wanlai didn’t seem like someone who would harm his own family, and besides, he had no other options at the moment. “…It’s Young Master Yu. When we went to the mining site, he accidentally lost his footing and fell down the mountain. He’s unconscious and still in the hospital undergoing emergency treatment. The doctor said we need to notify the family. He might need a blood transfusion or something. Should we…?”
Yu Wanlai’s vision instantly blurred. What’s going on? So no matter what he does, the plot will automatically reset and return to its original course?
“Hello?” Hearing the voice from the receiver, Yu Wanlai took a deep breath. Lives were at stake, and now wasn’t the time for such thoughts. He tried to calm himself down and said, “I understand. Write down my contact information and send me the address. I’ll have his mother go there.”
After hanging up, Yu Wanlai asked Xiao Lai to help him take the day off and hurriedly took the elevator downstairs, contacting the driver to take him to the group’s headquarters. Just before he got out of the car, Yu Wanlai suddenly realized he hadn’t asked for Yu Cheng and Qin Shuang’s phone numbers.
In that moment, Yu Wanlai clearly felt the air around him freeze for a brief moment. He stiffened and looked at the driver, asking for the two numbers. Fortunately, he had asked for them earlier, so he was able to get in the elevator without issue. The group’s headquarters was even harder to get into than the main office. Most people here didn’t know his identity, let alone the front desk.
Yu Cheng’s phone still couldn’t be reached. Yu Wanlai had no choice but to call Qin Shuang instead, and this time, the call was answered quickly. He only waited a few minutes in the reception room before Qin Shuang rushed in, looking a little pale.
Yu Wanlai looked past Qin Shuang and couldn’t help but ask, “Where’s my dad? I can’t reach him…”
Qin Shuang glanced at him. “He’s still in a meeting and has been quite busy lately. I’ll go check on that first.”
While waiting for the elevator, Yu Wanlai explained the situation to Qin Shuang in detail. Yu Qingyue was in a hospital in a neighboring city, and it would be much faster for them to drive there by highway than to book tickets online at the last minute.
After Qin Shuang got in the car, she was surprised to see Yu Wanlai getting in from the other side. “…Are you going too?”
Yu Wanlai nodded and said, “Of course, I have to go. It’s always better to have someone else to help.”
Qin Shuang didn’t have the mood to think too much. She glanced at Yu Wanlai once more and confirmed that he didn’t seem to have any ill intentions before she instructed the driver to start the car.
On the way, Yu Qingyue made another call to Xu Ran and had him speak to Qin Shuang, which made Qin Shuang’s expression improve a little. Yu Wanlai felt that he was probably more worried about Yu Qingyue than even his own mother would be. Although it was an accident, no one could blame him, but the fact that everything seemed to be following the original plot’s trajectory still made him feel very uneasy. He remembered that in the original plot, the antagonist had tampered with the car, causing Yu Qingyue to lose control and get into an accident on her way to the company. In that car crash, the driver died on the spot, and the male lead was paralyzed from the waist down.
Yu Wanlai gripped his hands tightly on his lap, his heartbeat quickening. The scenery outside the car window rushed past, but Yu Wanlai still felt like the car was moving too slowly. When he urged the driver to speed up for the second time, Qin Shuang finally spoke up, “It’s fine, Lao Yan, this speed is good enough. Safety is the most important thing.”
Yu Wanlai: … Could it be that they’re suspecting him of intentionally accelerating? After all, he was in the car too.
Qin Shuang had calmed down a bit by now. She didn’t look as anxious as she had when she first heard the news. She looked up at the rearview mirror and glanced at Yu Wanlai. He seemed to care more about Yu Qingyue than she had expected, and his frantic expression didn’t seem like an act. Maybe the relationship between the two was much closer than she realized when she didn’t know the details.
Qin Shuang had been sleeping poorly lately, and with such a big incident happening suddenly, she ended up falling asleep leaning back in her seat. When the car stopped in front of the central hospital, Yu Wanlai noticed that Qin Shuang had fallen asleep. Just as he was awkwardly unsure of how to wake her up, Qin Shuang woke up on her own when the car stopped, likely because she hadn’t been in a deep sleep—she was in a half-dreaming state.
Yu Wanlai quickly got out of the car and headed with Qin Shuang to the emergency center. When they arrived at the emergency room entrance, they saw Xu Ran sitting on a bench in the hallway. As soon as Qin Shuang saw him, she asked, “How is he? Did the doctor give any details?”
Xu Ran first looked at Yu Wanlai, then realized that this was likely the mother of Yu Qingyue, whom he had just spoken to on the phone. He nodded and asked if they were okay before speaking, “The doctor just came out to confirm the patient’s information and blood type, and they should be doing a blood transfusion experiment now.”
Yu Wanlai sighed in relief. Blood transfusions meant the person was still alive, but… suddenly, something occurred to him, and he hurriedly asked, “Did he suffer any internal injuries or anything?”
Xu Ran looked at him in surprise. Didn’t these two have a bad relationship? Why did it seem like he was… concerned? He shook his head, “We don’t know yet. After the doctor confirmed the information, he hasn’t come out again, and I haven’t had a chance to ask.”
The group continued waiting outside the operating room. Every now and then, Yu Wanlai would glance at the time on his phone, stand up to walk around a few steps, and glance at the door as if trying to see what was happening inside. Meanwhile, he kept googling things on his phone, like whether the hospital’s blood bank had enough supply, or if falling from a mountain could cause paralysis.
Finally, the indicator light on the operating room door turned off. A few minutes later, doctors and nurses came out, and Yu Wanlai quickly rushed forward, grabbing the doctor’s arm and immediately asking, “How is he? How is my brother? His legs are okay, right? What about his nerves?”
Qin Shuang, who had also been anxiously watching the doctor, gave Yu Wanlai a strange look. The doctor took a few steps back to avoid the agitated Yu Wanlai, then asked who the family members were. Once Qin Shuang responded, the doctor slowly began, “The patient is no longer in critical condition. The wounds on his back and waist have been stitched up. We will continue monitoring his condition, and you can go ahead and pay for the hospitalization procedures.”
Xu Ran looked at the two of them, spoke briefly with Qin Shuang, and then went downstairs to handle the paperwork. The doctor, who was about to leave, looked at Yu Wanlai and said, “The patient’s main injuries were to his upper body, so his legs are fine. As for the nerves…”
Yu Wanlai immediately lifted his gaze to look at the doctor, his pupils slightly trembling, afraid of hearing something he didn’t want to hear.
“When the patient fell down the mountain, he likely took some protective measures, so he didn’t sustain significant internal injuries. His nerves are fine as well, and he should wake up in a few days.” The doctor then turned to Qin Shuang, his tone reassuring. “This is your son, right? It seems like the two brothers have a good relationship. Just a bit of worry led to some confusion.”
Qin Shuang smiled awkwardly and went to send the doctor off. She also discussed some follow-up care details. Yu Wanlai finally felt relieved, letting out a sigh. However… was the doctor mocking him? But the male lead in the original story had been paralyzed after an accident, so it was normal for him to be worried like this. Now it seemed that the plot wasn’t following the original storyline, and he probably had been overthinking.
After Yu Qingyue was pushed back to his hospital room, Yu Wanlai finally had time to look at Xu Ran. He suddenly noticed that Xu Ran also looked disheveled. “Did you get hurt too? Then…”
Hearing this, Qin Shuang immediately turned to look at Xu Ran. “Are you injured? You should go see a doctor. You should get a check-up, and any expenses can be reimbursed by the company. I’ll also talk to Xiaoyue and get you a salary raise and a bonus. This incident was really thanks to you, Assistant Xu.”
Xu Ran had not met Qin Shuang before, but seeing her speak to him, he immediately exchanged a few polite words: “…It’s my responsibility, so I’ll leave now.”
Qin Shuang nodded, “Alright, go ahead.”
Yu Wanlai went out with Xu Ran. Since Yu Qingyue was still asleep, and since he had a good relationship with Xu Ran, he decided to go for a check-up with him. When they came back, Yu Wanlai had brought back some food from the hospital cafeteria. It was light but nutritious. He had also walked around outside but wasn’t sure what Qin Shuang usually ate. He could eat just about anything, so he figured the cafeteria food would be good enough for most people.
He placed the lunch boxes on the narrow table at the foot of Yu Qingyue’s bed. The area by the window was just a water bar, so it was too high to eat at. He handed one of the boxes to Qin Shuang, who was sitting on the sofa. “It’s already evening. Auntie, would you like to eat something?”
Qin Shuang reached out to take the lunch box. Just then, the door to the hospital room was pushed open, and in came Yu Cheng and his assistant, both in a rush. They probably hurried over as well. Yu Wanlai immediately handed one of the lunch boxes to Yu Cheng. “Dad, you’re here. So… would you like to eat?”
Yu Cheng waved his hand, his gaze falling on Yu Qingyue, who was sleeping. He spoke in a low voice, “Not yet, what did the doctor say?”
Yu Wanlai quickly withdrew his hand. “Perfect, this was supposed to be our meal. If you get hungry later, you can figure something out.”
Yu Cheng: …
Qin Shuang: …
