“We are just talking casually. What can he do to us? Do you think we’re afraid of him? If we say something like that to him…” one person tried to maintain composure with a tense neck.
Glancing at the person, Rong Shi chuckled softly and said, “If you’re not afraid, why is your voice trembling? Straighten your tongue and talk.”
“You…”
“There really isn’t anything to be afraid of, but what if he finds out you’re spreading rumors and decides to take matters into his own hands?” Rong Shi looked at them and said with a tinge of regret. “One more thing to remind you is if you can’t control your mouth, always talking bad about others, then be prepared to get beaten anytime. After all, your mouth reeks so badly that when you get beaten, it will be entirely your own fault.”
While she said it this way, Rong Shi considered going to ask Gu Shi later whether there was any news from Su Yu and when he was coming back. This couldn’t continue.
They had already rescheduled the engagement once. If it happened again, what would the villagers think?
When Rong Shi arrived at the Wangs’ home, she was surprised to see that not only had Su Yu returned, but there were also two unfamiliar elderly people. She learned from Xiao Bao’s introduction that one of them was Su Yu’s grandfather.
Seeing the old man’s fondness for Xiao Bao and Wang Jinghe, Rong Shi felt relieved.
“Why have you come, Aunt Rong?” Wang Jinghe asked with curiosity. Rong Shi rarely visited their home, usually only coming when she had a specific reason to meet with Gu Shi.
“I came to check if Su Yu has returned. Now that I see he’s back, I can relax,” Rong Shi said with a sigh.
“Are the villagers causing trouble again, Aunt Rong?” Hearing Mrs. Rong’s words, Wang Jinghe guessed that the villagers had likely been spreading unpleasant rumors, which was why Rong Shi had come to see them.
Rong Shi furrowed her brows and said, “I don’t know where they got the information about your postponed engagement, but they’ve been spreading baseless rumors. That’s why I came to check if Su Yu had any news.”
“After all, the engagement date can’t be changed again. If it gets postponed once more, those villagers will have a field day talking about you.”
Wang Jinghe frowned at this. Had these people not learned their lesson from the previous incident? How could they still dare to spread baseless rumors?
“Aunt Rong, thank you for coming,” Wang Jinghe said sincerely. It was clear that Rong Shi was genuinely concerned, and it felt good to have someone looking out for them.
Rong Shi patted Wang Jinghe’s shoulder and said, “Why thank me? I’m just happy to see you doing well. I can’t wait to join your engagement celebration when the time comes.”
Wang Jinghe was unashamedly pleased by her words. “You’re always welcome, Aunt Rong”
“I won’t be shy, then.”
“Of course not.”
“In that case, I’ll take my leave. You’re a busy family.” Since there were guests in the house, Rong Shi didn’t want to intrude any longer.
Wang Jinghe sent the visitor away and returned to see Su Yu with a pensive and expressionless look.
Walking up to him, she reached out and pinched his cheek. “What’s with that expression? There’s really no need to get angry at these people. Getting angry only hurts yourself. Why bother?”
Su Yu looked at Wang Jinghe. “I’m just thinking about how to make them shut up for good.”
“It’s quite simple. When the time comes for our engagement, create a bit of a commotion. That’s the best way to strike back.” Su Xi commented from the side. “Xiao He, you’ve been through a lot these years.”
Wang Jinghe shook her head. “It’s all in the past. I could handle it back then, and I can certainly handle it now. Grandfather, you don’t need to worry. These people can only talk, and besides their words, they have nothing else to say.”
Su Yu shot Wang Jinghe a displeased look and said, “Only someone as naive as you would say such things. Are you that simple-minded?”
Wang Jinghe maintained her composure, gazing at Su Yu without expression. “Su Yu, have you gotten more audacious lately?”
“Did I say something wrong?” Su Yu responded, nonchalant.
Wang Jinghe slapped Su Yu and said irritably, “We’ll still have to live here, okay? Is there any need to make things so rigid?”
Su Yu retorted with frustration, “Your time here is going to be less in the future. Why do you still care about these people?”
Wang Jinghe was dumbfounded by Su Yu’s logic and asked, “What do you mean by my time here will be less in the future?”
“In the future, you’ll have to go back to the Capital with me. Doesn’t that mean you’ll spend less time here?” Su Yu asserted confidently.
Wang Jinghe was rendered speechless. The truth was, she was indeed planning to return to the Capital with him. But listening to his words somehow put her in a bad mood.
“Both of you, stop arguing. Xiao Yu, you should try to see things from Xiao He’s perspective. What she said is correct. Right now, all their possessions are here, and it’s not as simple as packing everything up and leaving. Moreover, your father-in-law and the others will likely spend more time here in the future. Being too rigid with these relationships may not be a good idea in the long run,” Su Xi advised, looking at Su Yu from across the room.
Su Yu remained silent, and after a long pause, he grumbled, “Why is everything so irritating? Can’t we just resolve these matters properly? Why do we always have to accommodate those people?”
Su Yu felt stifled by the situation.
“It’s just for now,” Wang Jinghe said, “In the future, the tables will turn. They’ll be the ones who are helpless, and no matter how much they curse at us, it won’t matter then.”
Su Yu understood Wang Jinghe’s point, but it still left a sour feeling in his heart.
“I get what you’re saying, but every time something comes up, these people start gossiping and speaking ill of us. They always say harsh things, and it just ruins my mood,” Su Yu complained.
Wang Jinghe looked at Su Yu with a wry smile. “Why let it affect your mood? When you’re doing business or dealing with matters in the business world, do you let your emotions show like this?”
“Of course not,” Su Yu replied. In both the business world and official circles, it was essential not to let your emotions show openly. He couldn’t afford to do that; it would be a liability.
