Chapter 5: The Wound on Wei Bao’s Body

“You don’t need to be afraid, this horse is called Snow Lion, it’s intelligent, just sit comfortably, it won’t throw you off.”

The man stood in the distance, holding his sword. The night was hazy, and Wang Baochuan couldn’t see his face clearly.

She only noticed that his voice was very pleasant, like a clear spring in a valley, refreshing and soothing.

Wang Baochuan thanked him again, following the script of a heroic rescue, she asked her benefactor’s name.

Her benefactor replied in a cold voice, “Bai Yu.”

As he spoke, Wang Baochuan noticed that he looked up at the stars in the night sky.

“Mr. Bai, I, the young lady, thank you for saving my life.  If there is a next life, I will surely repay your kindness…”

As she spoke politely, she reached into her bosom and took out two gold ingots.  She had prepared them in advance, fearing that she might not escape the fate of being rescued by Xue Pinggui, the gold would be a good thank you gift.

After all, she couldn’t give him something like a hairpin or jade bracelet, which were personal items.

Bai Yu mounted the other horse that his attendant had led over, and said coldly, “No need.”

Wang Baochuan was annoyed.  She rode the horse, swaying along the mountain path towards the city gate.

Moonlight spilled onto the road, the wind blew through the trees, the scenery here was like stepping into a painting.

After he had gone far, Bai Yu’s attendant couldn’t help but laugh, “I didn’t expect that our master, with his handsome appearance and dignified bearing, would be treated with such indifference by that woman…”

Bai Yu didn’t say anything, but another attendant scolded, “Asong, have you been reading too many storybooks, or have you been too idle lately?  Do you want the master to send you to the Forbidden Palace to sweep the floors?”

Asong obediently shut his mouth, not daring to say anything more.

Wang Baochuan caught up with the convoy at the city gate.  Mrs. Wang hugged her and cried, “My child, you scared your mother to death.”

“Mother, I’m fine, I was lucky enough to be rescued by a passing knight.”

As she spoke, Xue Pinggui, carrying a package, passed by behind her.

Xiaolian saw that the man was handsome, so she whispered in Wang Baochuan’s ear, “Miss, is the knight you’re talking about this one?”

Wang Baochuan turned her head, Xue Pinggui, dressed in a long linen robe, met her gaze.  They were separated by a distance of ten steps, but it felt like they were separated by past lives and present lives.

She instinctively felt a little nauseous, the bitter taste in her mouth surged up.

“Baochuan, are you feeling unwell?” Wang Jinchuan, her elder sister, hurried over and held her hand with concern.

She didn’t bother to rest, she went to tell her father and brother-in-law about the details of the bandit attack.  She mentioned that he had used her dagger to cut the assassin’s chest.

Su Long took the dagger from her hand, his eyes lit up.  The wounds made by this dagger would have uneven cuts, if they investigated according to these wounds, they would definitely find something.

Prime Minister Wang’s face was ashen, he ordered that they must find the bandit.  He wanted to see what fool dared to attack the Prime Minister’s mansion.

Su Long took his orders and left.

A few days later, Su Long had been unable to find anything, and he didn’t know how to explain to his father-in-law when he ran into Xiaolian and Wei Bao’s attendant chatting.

“What are you doing with such good wound medicine?  Who’s injured?” Xiaolian asked curiously.

The attendant stammered, he didn’t expect that Xiaolian’s eyes were so sharp, and she happened to see him coming to get medicine from General Wei Hu.

“Could it be that your general is injured?” Xiaolian slapped her forehead, “Oh, I have to tell my miss, you don’t know how much my miss has been paying attention to your general lately, if she knew that General Wei was injured, she would definitely go to visit him personally.”

The attendant hurriedly stopped her from making a fuss, “Miss Xiaolian, Miss Xiaolian, you’ve misunderstood, it’s not our general who’s injured, it’s his deputy, the general heard that the second brother-in-law of the Prime Minister’s mansion has medicine from the Imperial Hospital, so he asked me to come and get it.”

Xiaolian’s voice was loud, and her words were heard by Su Long without missing a beat.

Su Long wasn’t a stranger to Wei Bao, this Wei Bao was quite talented, but he was obsequious to superiors and abusive to inferiors, how could he possibly come to the Prime Minister’s mansion to get medicine for his deputy’s injury?

He had doubts in his heart, so he quietly followed the attendant.

Because he was following, he had to climb over the wall.  He watched as the attendant delivered the wound medicine to Wei Bao’s room.

Su Long lay on the eaves, before he could take a closer look, he heard Wei Bao’s grumbling voice, “You dog!  Can’t you even apply medicine properly?”

“I’ll chop off your hand!”

“General, spare me, General, spare me.”

Su Long lifted a tile and clearly saw the wound on Wei Bao’s chest, the wound was uneven and claw-like in shape.

Impossible!

Su Long rubbed his eyes in shock, the wound looked like it was made by his third cousin’s dagger.

Moreover, there was no military news recently, why would Wei Bao be injured?

He didn’t know why this was happening, but it was a serious matter, so he had to report everything he had found to his father-in-law.

Prime Minister Wang obviously didn’t believe it either, the two of them discussed whether it was just a coincidence?

For this reason, Prime Minister Wang even asked Su Long to deliberately probe Wei Bao, saying that he smelled medicine on him and asked if he was injured?

Wei Bao denied it outright, and even said that he had been unwell recently and hadn’t gone out, how could he be injured!
