Three Years of Marriage: Even a Military Union Must End in Divorce Chapter 7

Chapter 7: Let’s Talk About Divorce

Jiang Ning was so surprised that she momentarily forgot that the term “husband” hadn’t been coined yet in this era.

Shen Mo heard a word he had never heard before from her, but he guessed it probably meant partner.

Jiang Ning looked up at him, her eyes curved in a bright smile that seemed to lighten the somewhat dim room.

Jiang Ning had originally been worried that the man she was married to might be a scruffy, unkempt soldier, and that he might not agree to a divorce.

Now, she wasn’t so worried. This man didn’t seem like the type to be clingy.

Facing the woman’s delicate and charming face, Shen Mo instinctively stood a bit straighter, his jaw unconsciously tensing. After pondering his words for a moment, he finally said, “I am Shen Mo.”

Hearing him admit it, Jiang Ning found the situation surreal. Who would have thought that the brave soldier from the train was her husband of three years?

“I am Jiang Ning,” she introduced herself.

Shen Mo nodded. “I know.”

He had just returned from a mission when Qian Feng informed him that Jiang Ning had come to the military base to find him.

Shen Mo found it fascinating how fate worked sometimes. The clever and resourceful girl who had escaped from human traffickers at the train station was his wife.

Shen Mo’s gaze on the girl in front of him was direct and focused. Since their separation at the train station, her graceful figure had lingered in his mind.

He had filled his time with missions to avoid thinking about her bright and mischievous face, and his subconscious had warned him that it was wrong.

But reality suddenly told him that she was his legally married wife!

Shen Mo’s hand, hanging by his side, felt a little lost and could only subtly rub against his pants.

However, his eyes remained intently fixed on the girl in front of him.

Her skin was fair and smooth, like the moon in the sky, emitting a clear and ethereal glow. The corners of her eyes, slightly raised, hinted at a mischievous nature.

Jiang Ning also observed him, purely out of curiosity.

They stood in silence, yet there was an inexplicable subtlety in the air between them.

Shen Mo felt that he should say something.

Just as he was about to ask the girl in front of him why she had come to find him.

“Uncle Shen.”

“Uncle Qian.”

The child’s voice broke the subtle atmosphere in the room.

Huo Zhiqi greeted the two politely.

Between Jiang Ning and the uncles, he chose to speak to Jiang Ning first. He looked at her, gently tugging on her sleeve. “Sister, I’ve memorized the words. I need to go back to class.”

After a few days of interaction, Jiang Ning and the little boy had become quite familiar. She reached out and rubbed his head, smiling. “Good boy, go to class.”

Huo Zhiqi nodded.

Then he looked at Shen Mo. “Uncle Shen, I’m going to class now.”

“Hmm.”

The atmosphere in the room made Qian Feng feel uncomfortable as well. Seizing the opportunity, he said, “Zhiqi, Uncle Qian will take you to school.”

As he left, Huo Zhiqi looked back at Jiang Ning with a reluctant gaze. She was Uncle Shen’s wife, and he wouldn’t be able to come here for lessons anymore.

Qian Feng and Huo Zhiqi left.

Jiang Ning met his ink-black eyes. “Shen Mo, let’s talk.”

“Alright,” Shen Mo nodded slightly, his words concise.

Shen Mo moved past her, pulled out the chair that Huo Zhiqi had been sitting in at the desk, and sat down facing her.

“What do you want to talk about?” Shen Mo, who rarely paused in his speech, hesitated for a moment.

Jiang Ning didn’t hold back. She had already thought carefully about her words. Sitting down opposite him, she didn’t hesitate to speak directly. “Let’s talk about our divorce.”

Hearing the word “divorce,” the man’s calm eyes narrowed slightly.

Shen Mo didn’t respond, but suddenly stood up.

His sudden movement startled Jiang Ning.

The man was quite tall, and his abrupt rise made him seem like a looming shadow that completely enveloped her.

As soon as they met, she brought up the topic of divorce. Was this man going to hit her?

Jiang Ning’s instinctive flinch was noticed by Shen Mo.

With a calm expression, he walked over to the water bottle, poured a glass of water, and placed it within easy reach of Jiang Ning.

To Jiang Ning, this gesture seemed like he was maintaining a distance.

Seeing that he wasn’t going to hit her, Jiang Ning let out a sigh of relief.

On the train, she had jokingly thought that if this man were her husband, she might consider not getting a divorce. But in any era, a marriage without a foundation of love couldn’t last long. She didn’t know his preferences or habits, and he didn’t know hers.

Forcing two people to be together could lead to all sorts of conflicts in the future.

Shen Mo sat back down opposite her and asked the second question, “Why do you want a divorce?”

Jiang Ning answered frankly, “It’s obvious from the fact that you haven’t come to see me once in three years of marriage. We don’t have a foundation of love. Forcing us to be together will probably make our future difficult.”

Shen Mo responded almost immediately, “We’ve never been together. How do you know our future will be difficult?”

Jiang Ning found that his questions were indeed sharp and on point.

It seemed that playing the emotional card wouldn’t work, so she spoke seriously, “We don’t have a foundation of love, and our marriage was hasty. Therefore, we should get a divorce. After the divorce, we can each pursue our own happiness.”

Shen Mo was silent for a moment, his hands on his legs tightening and then relaxing. “Is this what you really want?”

Jiang Ning nodded. “Of course!”

Being forced to marry and spend a lifetime together without love would make both of them unhappy.

Seeing her nod without hesitation, Shen Mo’s eyes darkened, and he decided not to explain the reason he hadn’t visited her for three years.

His face remained expressionless as he suddenly stood up, his eyes fixed on Jiang Ning. “Alright, I will file for a divorce today. The approval process will take some time, so you may need to stay here for a few more days.”

Every time this man stood up, he gave off an inexplicable sense of pressure. But his face always made Jiang Ning feel a little infatuated. Not to mention his physique, which was evident even through his clothes, with broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long legs.

He could rival even the world-famous models from her previous life.

Jiang Ning nodded. “No problem.”

Staying here for a while would give her more time to think about what to do after the divorce. Teaching the little guy, Huo Zhiqi, English these past few days had given her the idea of temporarily working as a teacher to earn some money.

Her main focus was on studying medicine, and her future path would have to be figured out step by step.

Shen Mo had other things to attend to. After giving Jiang Ning another look, he headed towards the door. As he reached the door, it seemed like he remembered something and turned to ask, “Did you have lunch?”

He had been polite throughout, hadn’t gotten angry about the divorce, and had even agreed to it without hesitation.

Hearing him ask about her meal, Jiang Ning felt a little embarrassed about her earlier suspicions. She replied, “Yes, I did.”

Shen Mo nodded. “I’ll come to get you for dinner at the mess hall.”

“Oh, okay.”

After Shen Mo left, Jiang Ning rubbed her arms, feeling a bit awkward.

Fortunately, Shen Mo had agreed to the divorce. Otherwise, she would have been so nervous that she might have started digging a castle out of the ground.
